Michelle Splitter, Deceased
Michelle Splitter, basketball player and sister of Tau Ceramica center Tiago Splitter, died today of Leukemia. She was 19. Michelle Splitter had battled the disease for the better part of the last 4 years. In 2007, she enjoyed a stint of good health and return to the court after a successful bone marrow transplant.
The Splitter siblings have longed enjoyed a close relationship. One under-reported aspect of Tiago Splitter’s decision to resign with Tau Ceramica was the care of his sister. Tiago Splitter lives in Spain with his family and Michelle had received medical treatment there. Along with all the other variables of his free agent decision, the advantage of maintaining a stable home life in light of Michelle’s health must have been attractive to the Brazilian center.
We wish the Splitter family the best during this difficult time.

So sorry to hear about this. Kind of feel bad that I figured the reason he was staying in Europe was only because of the NBA rookie salary cap. My prayers are with you Tiago and the rest of the Splitter family.

I concur with Hamer, had thought the same thing about Tiago, and now I feel like such a @ss. My prayers and best wishes go out to the Splitter family, as well as my apology fo thinking so little of Tiago. Quite often we fans don’t know know the complete story and factors that influence the choices made by athletes, if we did we would learn to not be so judgemental.
