Some Welcome Reform

Tim and I are both pleased to hear that the NBA will be adding a game of HORSE to this year’s All Star festivities. In fact, Tim, Rob and the rest of the TrueHoop gang have quite a few ideas as to what could make the weekend more enjoyable for everyone involved.

I am big believer that several very simple reforms could make All Star weekend a considerably more entertaining event, and in all honesty I am a little disappointed it took them so long to add something as simple as HORSE. Particularly given the fact that, once upon a time, the competition existed. That’s right, back in the day “Pistol” Pete Maravich and “The Iceman” George Gervin squared off in a rousing game of HORSE. See for yourselves:

  • I have always wanted to see 1 on 1 games. Who wouldn’t watch Kobe vs Lebron? That might set records. Who wouldn’t watch Parker vs Devon Harris or Chris Paul? I love to HORSE idea, though.

  • Ideas I have heard of and that I would support:

    - HORSE
    - One on One Mini-Tournament
    - 3 on 3 Mini-Tournament
    - America vs World All-Star Game
    - NBA vs FIBA
    - Rookies vs NBDL
    - 1 man Shooting Stars competition.
    - Kill any Judged competition (dunk contest).
    - Rookies vs Just Retired
    - Fans Long Distance Shooting Competition (half court, opposite FT line, Corners, etc.)

  • I also like 21 with tips and Knockout.

  • A game of 21, limit to 3 or 5 players, take backs, make it take it, limit 3 free-throws, breaking the ice is worth 3 points, and three tip-ins elimination

  • I like the ideas of horse and 21, but I would suggest that we also make them play on a hoop attached to the roof over the garage. No t.v. timeouts, but a break in the action when dad needs to pull out the car. The gnome is out of bounds, but the potted plant is in. Game goes til dark.

  • Manu would OWN anyone in a game of Horse… the whole tricky soccer things he does in practice would flat out beat the majority of the players not names Steve Nash who may actually have a chance at him
