Tony Parker: Director of Operations

Last summer Tony Parker set in on the Spurs draft with the front office personnel. He must be a quick study because he is now the second largest share holder in ASVEL, France’s second most successful team. He is also the club’s new Director of Operations. (And yes, that link is to People, not ESPN; how often does that happen?).

I’m not sure what this means for Parker the player, but my mind immediately runs to cool conflict of interest possibilities. For example, last summer the Spurs worked out a scenario with Angelico Biella that allowed them to send James Gist and development instructions to Italy. Gist had had a strong summer league with San Antonio, but was likely a year away from NBA-readiness. Angelico Biella: the Italian Toros. Thinking more broadly, will Parker’s team give the Spurs’ international scouting department another resource to tap? I’m looking into these things and will post more information as I receive it.

And from the sounds of things, he’s in deep: I do not wish to go into details but I can tell that I also have an option to take the majority of the club and to become its president. This is no in the news today and I have the opportunity to start with Gilles Moretton and Antony Thiodet who both have a great experience at this level. I thus wish to learn at their side prior to taking more responsibilities. [...]
