Match-Up of the Night: Mason vs. Kapono

In our last meeting with the Raptors, a 107-97 victory back in San Antonio, the Spurs hit a season high 16 3-pointers. Mason, who had 16 points, made 4 of his 6 attempts from beyond the arc. Similar fireworks can be expected this evening in Toronto. Opponents are currently shooting 37.4% from outside against the Raps’ defense, putting Toronto’s perimeter defense solidly in the bottom third of the league. Although there is no reason to believe we’ll see a repeat of last week’s antics in Denver, expect to see Popovich be pretty conservative with the big three’s minutes (it’s the second night of a back-to-back). That’ll give Mason and co. plenty of time to jack up as many 3-pointers as they like.

Without Chris Bosh in the lineup (another reason the big three, especially Duncan, may have an easy night ahead), you can expect a plethora of 3PAs by the Raps as well. Supposedly Raptors coach Jay Triano has given Jason Kapono license to shoot, hoping a hot hand on the two-time defending 3-point contest champ’s part can help them steal a victory. Let’s hope Mason outshines Kapono tonight, giving the Toronto crowd a taste of what their going to see on Saturday when he brings the 3-point contest title home to SA.
