Quin Snyder: Coach of the Year

Throughout the season, I’ve made mention of how much talent the Toros have seen pass through Austin. Yesterday we saw that DeMarcus Nelson’s name has been added to the list of Toros to receive a call up to the NBA. Amazingly, despite all the turnover of top-level talent, the Toros are one win away from setting a franchise record. Quin Snyder is charged with developing all that talent and responsible for winning all those games. Not surprisingly, Quin Snyder is this season’s D-League Dennis Johnson Coach of the Year.

The press release includes this fitting quote from R.C. Buford:

“This is a well-deserved honor for Coach Snyder. During his time with the Toros he has done a great job developing young players, teaching the skills needed to jump from the D-League to the NBA, while also putting a competitive team on the court night after night. The success that Quin has enjoyed in Austin is vital to the Spurs organization. We are thrilled that he has been recognized for his hard-work and dedication.”

Congratulations, Coach Snyder. Maybe the next call up is your own.

  • Snyder was a gifted college coach. And I think it’s clear that he’s going to be a talented professional coach as well.

  • It must be one heck of a ride going from hottest college coach, to collegiate pariah, to the easy-to-fall-by-the-wayside D-League, to probable pro coach next season. He must have one very understanding and loving wife.

  • Congrats to Snyder. With all the Toros success, it would be nice for Spurs finally reap some on-court benefits of this unique association. I realize that any Toros experience helps the guys in Spur’s practice and such, but have the Lakers used their D-League team better than we have?

  • I answered my own posted question by reading the comments after the “Ian Mahinmi” post. I totally agree with you that the Toros have already helped the Spurs immensely because they provide roster flexibility.

  • The roster flexibility thing is important. It’s oft-said that it takes players 2, or in Bonner’s case, 3 years to get comfortable in Pop’s system. A year in Austin diminishes the learning curve for end of the bench players.

  • ThatBigGuy,

If Snyder makes a move up next season, I suspect it would be to join or replace an assistant in San Antonio. The Spurs are grooming him as much as they are, say, Malik Hairston. When Pop retires, Mike Budenholzer, Avery Johnson, Jacque Vaughn and Quin Snyder’s names will all be rumored as replacements. They’re gonna do this the Spurs way, which is to say within the family.

  • Yeah, Bruce. He seems to have the stuff. Amazing pedigree.
