Drew Gooden’s Mysterious Bleeding

From the Express News via Slam Online:

Gooden left the floor shortly before the end of the first half after he began spitting up blood. He was examined during halftime and returned for the second half, during which he played 11 minutes.

“It was just an odd sort of fall,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “He was spitting up blood, so they checked him out. I’m not sure what’s going on, exactly.”

Gooden said he took to brunt of his fall on his right shoulder blade area, and was perplexed about the source of the blood.

The fall they are referring to occurred when Josh Howard and Gooden collided while chasing down a rebound. Gooden leaped into the air and Howard got caught underneath him. Howard’s positioning caused Gooden to lose his balance and Gooden’s right shoulder smacked onto the hardwood. At the time it looked rough but I didn’t notice Gooden was bleeding or that he left the court before half.

UPDATE: According to Mike Monroe of the Express-News, Gooden felt good today and did not need further treatment.

  • I hope it turns out to be nothing. Gooden has been a beast and his evolution as a Spurs has been nothing sort of impressive. He hustles on the boards, plays smart D, and has offensive moves are masterful. His step-through is devastating. I hope he’s ok.

  • The blood came from his mouth? That is something to be concerned. I hope it’s nothing serious.

  • Blood from the mouth is actually not too difficult to cause. He might have just burst a blood vessel in his lungs when he landed on his back, that can cause blood from the mouth but is nothing serious.
We are going to need Gooden to produce offensively off the bench in game 3 like he did in game 2 so I hope he is good to go.
