I love how when Shaq comments that his recent play is “like Erik Dampier’s” Dampier has nothing to say back. However, all of a sudden he’s going to knock Tony on his back? Wow Dampier. Wow. Pick on someone your own size, but I guess you can’t handle that.

UPDATE: Not surprisingly, it appears Dampier has set himself for extra scrutiny in Game 3. An NBA official says the league is aware of Dampier’s comments, and will be monitoring his behavior in Thursday’s game.

I think that this will be a real test for Tony. He was already on the receiving end of two flagrent fouls on Monday (one called, one not). If he avoids driving into the lane when Dampier is there, the Mavs will win. If he takes it right into Dampier’s body at the first chance he gets, the Spurs will win.

Don’t get me wrong, Dampier is a BIG guy and it will take a lot of guts to put your career on the line.

I just wanted to lay down my 2009 Spurs Playoff perdiction. Dallas will go down in 6 games with one or two offensive tour-de-forces. The Spurs will beat them twice on their home floor. Then the Spurs will punk the Nuggets in 6 as they melt-down under second round preasure. The Spurs will then have a 30% chance of clearing the Lakers. Lakers are the team to beat, but Fisher can’t cover Parker and Oden is just dumb. Kobe will be reintroduced to Bruce and it will be a slugfest. The Spurs will go further than last year – all the way is a long shot.

Leave it to Damp and Jet to “thug it up”. I saw where one Mav fan said he couldn’t believe the flagrant on Terry saying he “just stood there and let Parker run into him”. Now that’s funny. I would love to see the replay he was watching. I guess it didn’t show Terry thrust his shoulder into Parker.

I suspect the NBA will have to talk with the refs beforehand on how to handle this situation. Premeditated hard fouls can harm a player– and the NBA’s reputation. This isn’t football and the guys aren’t wearing pads.

If the NBA were to do nothing and condone such talk, and in the unlikely event Tony was really hurt, I suspect there would be legal culpability all around.

My guess is Dampier just created a problem for himself and his teamates. Chances are the refs will call the first minor contact on Tony a foul, and will throw multiple flagrants if it escalates.

One also wonders is this a strategy to get Tim Duncan or another Spur into a fight defending Tony. I hope Pop discusses this issue with his team and defines the proper action. I also hope he mentions it to the NBA.

Do you think the NBA front office looks into threats like this? I hope so, and it doesn’t help them that the refs will keep an extra eye on Dumpier.

Once again, it is all about experience, composure, smarts, and then basketball. Unfortunately, Dampier forgot about the first 3. This is going to be a tough series but as it goes on, the games become more about composure and will to win. With your starters like Dampier already starting to crack under the pressure it doesn’t look good for Dallas.

Ooooo, we r soo scared now! What a sour loser! I hope he doesn’t get ejected on the very 1st play. We need his ‘no offense’ to keep Duncan relatively fresh on the defensive end of the court.
