Happy Birthday Tim Duncan
It was on this day in 1976 that Tim Duncan was born (h/t TDZilla). Although I didn’t realize it at the time, his coming into existence was one of the more important moments in my life. Consider this your game thread. I’ll be back later this afternoon with a recap. Go Spurs.

Too bad the Spurs lost faith in him today late in the 4th and started jacking up nothing but 3pointers for their last few shots. I hope you saw the play where Finley put up a “Ben Gordon” range 3 with Duncan WIDE OPEN under the basket and Duncan actually did his “are you kidding me” surprised look after the shot went up instead of trying to block out.

Once again, Bonner and Mason played invisibly. I know it’s hard to get shots when you don’t get touches, but you can still play D and get rebounds.
Though I suppose Bonner’s D on Dirk was OK, but Finley on Howard just isn’t working.
And please, let’s not bring back Gooden next year. His value is a ‘go to’ scoring option, and considering his past couple performances, I don’t think he’s a fit. Not sure what he’s doing on defense- I doubt he does either.
Have to say, Hill needs to get more playing time in Game 5.
Parker needs to involve his teammates earlier in the game so he can leave something in the tank for the last quarter. Timmy needs to put some arc on his free throws. His misses were huge today.
But the determining factor was the +14 rebound margin for the Mavs. Second chance opportunities killed us. Box out, BOX OUT, box out.

So many things to be improved on, so many things that went the wrong way, so many brain farts, and yet we still had a chance at the end. It’s so difficult to see them struggle this year. Last year we were the cagey veterans who taught the upstart young bucks a life lesson; this year we just look one step slow. I wonder if this is what it was like watching Ali fight his last few fights.
Happy Birthday Timmy. Thanks for being the best player since Jordan.

Sometimes stats tell the whole story:
- 12 missed FTs.
- 6/23 on 3s.
- ZERO points from Mason.
- 10 points from the bench, over half coming from a guy not expected to receive playing time (Hill).
What do you do when your third best scorer lays an egg and no one can hit an open 3? These issues had best be resolved for game 5 and game 6. We will not win a road game versus a momentum shooting team by clanking at the rate we’re doing. That it’s coming vs a soft defense makes it all the more infuriating.
That the game was still there for the taking shows how average the Mavs are, how great Tony played and that Hill has earned more minutes.

Chipp, I kind of agree with you on Gooden, but remember how badly Kurt Thomas played last year when he came in with limited time to learn our defensive and offensive scheme.
It takes time to learn our defense so I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt and see what he does next year, should we resign him.
