The Best Moments of the 08-09 Season: Hill Blocks Iverson’s Layup

I’m sure many fans will send you similar submissions, but in the off-chance they don’t, one of the brightest spots in an otherwise bleak season shouldn’t be overlooked. I’m talking of course about our eye-you-pee-you-eye star, rookie George Hill. Throughout the season we got to know a boatload of promising youngsters like Pops and Malik, but for whatever reason they didn’t make the cut.

Hill was there from the very first games of the season, we watched him grow into a true NBA backup point guard, and finally battle his way into the rotation in the fourth quarters of our final two games against the Mavericks. He’s part of every Spurs’ fan’s long-term plans for our team, and if I were so musically inclined, I would be writing folk songs about his limitless potential and his mighty wingspan.

It was difficult to settle on any given highlight. Should I choose a video of draft day, when we pulled off yet another late-pick steal to the dismay of the front office naysayers? Maybe his first interview in San Antonio, when most of us saw his face for the first time, listened to him talk the Spurs talk? His physical prowess would be best displayed by one of his thunderous dunks, like this one against the Timberwolves in December after a pass from Manu - in a combination we all expect to see often in the future.

However, it was his knack for lockdown defense, third only to Bruce’s and Tim’s in my mind, what gained him a spot in the roster, so perhaps a play like this sweet block on Spurs-nemesis JJ Barea in February would be better. Fortunately I was able to find a video that combined both, showing George become Iverson’s bane:

That’s George “Cubits” Hill, one of the “best moments” of this season.
