The Best Moments of the 08-09 Season: Manu’s Dunk on Hilton Armstrong
By Juan Hernandez
I picked this video for one reason, It gave the Spurs fan all around the world: hope. This clip comes from the home game that the Spurs won 106 to 93 against the New Orleans Hornets on January 31st.
As the Spurs started the season without Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, our record kept improving as the season went along
October 0-2
November 9-5
December 11-4
January 12-3
At the 46 game mark, the Spurs had won three straight games, seven of their last eight and our overall record was 32-14. This particular dunk over David Armstrong made Spurs fan erupt into join because it gave us hope that the team would be a title contender. Not only because Ginobili exploded and went hard at the rim in a manner that we had not seen all season long, but also because the rodeo road trip was around the corner. Unfortunately, five games into the rodeo road trip, I attended Ginobili’s last healthy game this season, against the Toronto Raptors at the Air Canada Center. Two days later, his injury was revealed to the public right before the All Star break and the hope was crushed.

When I saw that play it was the defining moment for me regarding Manu’s ability to play after his injury and I remember thinking, “oh shit….he’s back!!!”
Even though he ended up getting injured again, at that moment I really felt like another Spurs championship was on lock.
