Bouroussis Stays with Olympiacos

According to a Greek report, Yiannis Bouroussis is set to resign with Olympiacos.

The Spurs’ holes at center and wing remain, but at least Bouroussis’ decision came in advance of the draft and free agent period. That should help the Spurs focus more sharply on other options.

Let the hunt continue.

  • Damn. I was getting excited about that “massive frame” and those “excellent hands.” Oh well, better to know sooner rather than later.

  • ….that’s what she said?….

    /apologies

  • Well, I was getting excited too, but at least we won’t have to worry about the slow feet or potential constant foul trouble. So, you know, there’s that.

  • I heard from a certain sports talk show, here in San Antonio, that the Bouroussis contract offer wasn’t even real. Bouroussis’ agent was just using the Spurs and Cavs as leverage to get a bigger deal from Olympiacos. Any conformation of that?

Either way, I’m happy. I think we can make better use of the MLE. Another quick question though, if some how the Cavs really do get Yao, what are the chances the Spurs can sign Artest?

  • Well, formal proposals could not be made until July 1, so in that sense the offer wasn’t real. But I suspect the informal conversations were real and that he was a player for whom the Spurs had interest. Did his agent exploit that interest to the benefit of his client? I’m not sure why we’d doubt that, or lay blame. That’s what agents should do.

  • I don’t know too much about the kid, but I do know that the Spurs need to focus on some College players that are developed and that would fit into their system, such as Danny Green-perfect fit for the Spurs.

They also need to focus on offense, since it’s clearly Tony’s team now, and Toney Douglas would be a great fit for them, and with the other 2nd round pick, that is up in the air, but at least the first 2 guys I mentioned would fit into their system, but Pop has to do a better job of coaching as weird as that sounds, as well, and Tim need a true Center around him, how about Rasheed, who will bring his guy away from the basket, or Artest, who can play SF, or SG-very versatile?

  • Steven,

I’m not sure I agree about the NCAA players. I don’t think they’re any closer-assuming we’re talking about 2nd round selections-than the international prospects. And, in most cases, the international 2nd round players are more talented. I agree about Danny Green as a solid option at 37, not so much about Toney Douglas. I’d rather have Llull, Jerebko, Claver, De Colo, Beaubois, Gladyr, Beverley (kind of international), etc…

The truth is, there are only a few 2nd round picks that stand a chance of not spending the year in Austin. Right now, the Spurs are better suited to draft guys play overseas for another year or two, and try their hand at Hairston, Williams and Gist. Their best option is trading into the first to land Young or Casspi, but that’s easier said than done. Washington isn’t much of a possibility, but picks 11, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 25, 27, 28, and 29 are potentially available. Who knows if the Spurs can get something done, but they should have no shortage of conversation partners.

We’ll be wall-to-wall draft next week, so we can hash this out several times over between now and Thursday.

  • This should come as a surprise to nobody. Even though it’s only one player and it’s early, I’m already get’s the sense that this off season is going to be about swinging and missing for the Spurs.

At center, I expect them to whiff on Camby, Wallace, and McDyess, and end up with Gooden or worse, and the athletic, starting SF we’re all hoping for? Look for a mediocre player like Diawara to be brought in.

I expect the Spurs to fail to move into the 1st round in the draft, and then proceed to waste their 2nd round picks on players with less talent than others available just because they’re either good character/hard working guys or European. Watch as teams like Portland and Dallas make trades and take leaps forward, while the Spurs will be stuck with slightly younger, less proven mediocrity replacing the veteran scrubs that are on the way out.

Regardless of what they’ve accomplished in their history, I’m in show me and I’ll believe it mode when it becomes to the front office. Duncan needs to start putting pressure on the front office. I know he technically gave up that money for 2010, but the team is in dire need of upgrades now, and why not beat the crowd so to speak? Face it, they’re not landing anyone of true significance next summer anyway.
