I love hearing about Blairs work in the paint. I saw all of his tournament games this year and was impressed. The Spurs have been needing a guy like that for the past couple of years. With the addition of Mcdysse, Blair should learn alot about the game. I am very excited about this year and possibly the next if the guys stay healthy.

[...] Graydon Gordian of 48 Minutes of Hell: “I love watching [DeJuan] Blair work under the boards. He has a mature sense of spacing and soft, accurate hands. His rebounding was particularly notable on the offensive end, where he consistently turned misses by his teammates into open layups and trips to the line (where he went 5-6). As will be the case with during the regular season, Blair was by no means the tallest player on the floor. But he was the only player on either team whose rebounding count reached double digits. Blair’s offensive contributions weren’t limited to put-backs; he showed promising signs that a well-rounded offensive game may be in his future. On the first play we ran specifically to him, Blair turned and hit a smooth 12-footer. On the next play, he received the ball at almost the exact same spot and used his defenders over-adjustment to take him off the dribble and draw the foul. Blair’s mechanics are a little loose, but the origins of a reliable offensive arsenal are there.” [...]

I sheepishly plunked down the $14.99, and haven't looked back since (despite some technical issues with access). It was great to see our new players on the floor, along with seeing the returning guys (Hill, Hairston) being able to play more minutes. And Hill's authoritative tomahawk over some poor Hornet's head about midgame made me shout like I was watching a regular-season game. I'm looking forward to the next four games.

As to the game itself, I came away with very similar impressions as most of the posts above. Hill was quite impressive, making only a few notable mistakes, and his ball handling was stunning on more than one occasion. I would like to have seen more assists from him, too, but I think the folks above are right to say the Summer League isn't an assist-friendly environment. His energetic defense and heads-up running of the offense was confident and efficient. And with all that, I still got the impression he wasn't playing at full speed. If part-speed equals 25 points, I'm looking forward to seeing full speed!

Hairston shot remarkably well. His corner three in the final seconds gave me flashbacks of Bowen. And I thought he was channeling Bruce with alert, hands-up defense (though Hairston didn't appear to have nearly Bowen's sticky quickness, a bit of a disappointment. But then, that's why Bowen is--was?--so special).

Blair played impressively, especially for a first game, and I look forward to seeing the Chairman of the Boards back in session on Tuesday. And I'd like to see a bit more low-post defense from him then, too.

Beck played like an offensive all-star. Though I can't say I recall him doing anything notable defensively, I'd never seen his game before, and the few touches he got on offense almost always turned into points. Me likey.

Mahinimi was a disappointment, though he probably felt more pressure than anyone to do well (anyone with a name other than Gist, at least). He moved with energy, but I didn't see him altering shots or muscling down rebounds. And at least once he overplayed a screen and left the middle wide open. But, as Tydus noted above, he did have a sweet drive down the lane towards the end of the game, so perhaps he just needs time to get the rust off.

As to Gist, he seemed pretty much invisible. Not good, not bad, just invisible. Hopefully, we'll "see" his game on Tuesday.

McClinton defintely came across as out of his element. He hustled and worked hard, but didn't really have anything to show for it. And after he got his shot blocked twice early on, he really didn't get much more offensive opportunity to try again. I'm curious to see how the next game looks for him.

Ken, I feel the same way. Last year, I wouldn't watch the free summer league games, this year, I can't believe it but I paid the $15 to watch them.

I was impressed with Hill, Blair, and Malik Hairston, especially Hairston because I didn't expect him to be as effective as he was. Hairston made an impact in this game that didn't show up on the stat sheets, much like our experience with other guys named Malik, I think he's gonna be the kind of player that makes up greatly for his minor short comings in physical ability with intensity and hustle.

As for Gist, at one point I thought I saw him hit his chest on the rim (lets hope that's why he missed the shot and both the free throws) so the dude's plenty athletic, lets see if he's better next game

I feel the same way Ken, I have never followed the summer league before. I have lived in SA the entire Duncan era and have never been this excited about an upcoming season. I even considered paying to see Summer League games, how insane is that. The team we currently have is more talented then any previous team, by quite a bit. There are 5 players who have averaged 20PPG seasons counting Manu's 19.5 with a group of very talented young players. Our second unit will be leaps and bounds ahead of every other bench in the league.

Here's the highlights link: http://www.nba.com/video/games/spurs/2009/07/12/nba_noh_sas_1520900009_recap.nba/

On another note, I have never really cared about summer league (or even preseason games for that matter) because, for the last decade or so, Spurs haven't really relied on rookies and unknowns. We pretty much have known who would be are starting 5 and bench players. But this year is so odd, with so many rookies, young players, and unknown quantities certain to affect this coming season that I am actually deeply interested in this part of the offseason. Anyone else feel the same way?

Ken,

If you purchased the Summer League pass, I believe all of the games are archived online. For those of you who haven't, I'll start searching around. If I find some footage, I'll post it.

Hill was not mediocre last summer. Hill was bad.

Haislip has too much NBA service time to be allowed to play. OTOH, I believe he is practicing with the summer team.

Nice first game for Hill, Blair and Hairston. We will have a good bench next season but I think we need a good back up PG. Hill plays very well, I like him but he isn't a PG, Mason too and it was an issue last season.

Concerning Mahimni, I agree with what a lot of people are saying about him but don't forget it was his first game in a year. I'm very surprised you don't speak about Gist because he didn’t look particularly good too... So we will see.

Tydus,

I could be wrong, but I also didn't notice them running m(any) plays for Jack. They ran a great set play where Ian or Gist came out and set a pick for George on the back cut lob pass from Hairston.

I'd expect Jack to run a few more baseline curls coming off screens in the next game. It seemed like a good deal of his 3's came from those types of plays at Miami, and it's basically the same play we run to get Finley involved.
