David Robinson’s Press Conference
Spurs.com has footage of a David Robinson press conference from yesterday. The video, which runs 30 minutes, is broke into two parts, here and here. It’s definitely worth your time, and provides an offering of jovial moments intermixed with sober reflection.
I’ll let you watch the video for yourself, but here is a quick response.
A major theme of the press conference was the formation of a healthy, winning locker room in San Antonio. When Robinson arrived in San Antonio he was not embraced by the rest of the team-they were neither kind nor welcoming of their rookie center. San Antonio’s rise to dominance owes much to the transformation of the pre-Robinson locker room into what it is today. An NBA locker room takes on the personality of its players. For San Antonio this has meant David Robinson’s big-hearted zeal, a discipline that finds its background in the Naval and Air Force academies, and Tim Duncan’s calm, pragmatic approach to life. Locker rooms are personalities.
And Robinson’s enthusiasm spills over when he discusses new scholarship opportunities for students of The Carver Academy. It’s clear from listening to him that his commitment to the city and to excellence did not retire with his basketball career. His interest in helping shape good citizens is the same as the Spurs interest in creating good basketball.

David Robinson will always be my favorite Spur… and I suspect that I’m not the only one who feels that way.

Thanks for the post. And it’s true that who we are as Spurs owes a tremendous amount to who he is as a person. And I expect he’d be the first to admit-as he did when he won the MVP-that who he is as a person owes an even greater debt to Jesus.
It’s great to have such a classy, high-quality organization to be a fan of!

My first (and only actually) NBA Jersey was a David Robinson when I was around 13 years old. As much as I love Timmy, David Robinson IS the Spurs to me.

Robinson is the reason I started watching basketball and the reason I became a spurs fan for life… one of the greats persons to ever wear a NBA uniform, period.

It’s a small nitpick, but I think Pop has to be mentioned with Robinson and Duncan for shaping the locker room with personality. His dual persona of fun loving jokester/all business when the clock is running were huge to the development of the current team mentality.

Being a New Yorker all my life I was always a fan of New York teams (yankees, giants, rangers) but I was not born into loving a basketball team. My father was actually a celtics fan cause he grew up in an era of Russell and the great celtics teams. I became a fan of the Spurs when they got Robinson because he was my favorite player playing my favorite sport. When the Robinson era bled into the Duncan era I just kept on loving the spurs. I can’t imagine ever not being a huge fan of the spurs now and it is all because of what David started. I personally feel he is underrated as a basketball player. He might be the most accomplished player of all time. NBA CHAMPION, MVP, 1ST PICK IN DRAFT, REBOUNDING TITLE, SCORING TITLE, DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR, THE SCHICK STAT PLAYER OF THE YEAR NUMEROUS TIMES. What a great player and person. Congrats to David and thanks for making me a Spur fan for life. Especially since they are now my favorite of all teams and the team I follow the most.
