A Note on These Bourousis Rumors

Yahoo!, Sports Illustrated, and HoopsHype are reporting that the Spurs may have offered Olympiakos’ Ioannis Bourousis a four-year deal. Their reports all cite an Interbasket article where not only San Antonio but also Cleveland and Memphis are listed as potential suitors. Some of our commenters have begun picking up on the rumors as well.

So why exactly have Tim and I chosen not to comment on this most recent round of Bourousis speculation?

Because, if you look closely at the Interbasket article linked above, you’ll notice that it was not published recently but on June 6th, right around the time that we were covering the same issue extensively. This is not a new set of Bourousis rumors. It is the original rumor, which was firmly put to rest when Bourousis resigned with Olympiakos, being rehashed.

During the summer we covered the Bourousis speculation from several angles. In May we identified him as a potential target. In June, we discussed not only the financial details of a potential signing but also the hidden value of targeting a player like Bourousis. And we concluded our coverage when Bourousis chose to stay in Greece. Feel free to look back at some of our reporting if you have the time.

  • It popped up in my google alerts and I was thinking about writing something when i felt like I had heard his name. I went back to the Interbasket post and sure enough I saw that it was dated 6/6/09. Just seems kind of funny that you and I caught it but so many “credible” sources and mainstream media outlets didn’t and put it up without vetting it first.

  • I bet they saw it too. Just another case of writing what sells.

  • nice.

  • These recent rumors are just idiotic, if you ask me.

  • Just gotta love the internets; old rumors become fresh, *new* rumors because someone just stumbled over them.

  • Just wanted to add about Bourousis, he has stated in an interview that he doesn’t want to join then NBA right now because he thinks that he isn’t physically ready. His main problem is that he started playing basketball when he was 18 years old, but he is improving every year, and if he continues like that, he could, in a couple of years, make the jump.
