A Personal Note as the Season Approaches

Up until yesterday, for very personal reasons I had mixed feelings about the beginning of this season. I’m currently in graduate school, studying journalism. That means I write all day and, when I get home, write some more. Then I start working on pieces for 48 Minutes of Hell.

The offseason’s tempered pace is manageable, but once the regular season arrives the nearly ceaseless flow of Spurs-related news makes it difficult to breathe and stop. I often found myself wondering how I would fulfill both commitments: I love both this blog and the Spurs deeply, but school comes first.

Yesterday was no different. I woke up, a little tired from having spent all day Sunday writing and reporting for the upcoming week’s classes. As I stumbled through the early part of my day, gnawing on bagels and combing through a Chicago-area company’s quarterly earnings report in search of unexpected figures, Media Day, with it’s pre-rehearsed answers and brilliantly lit photo sessions, was an afterthought at best.

And then I tuned into yesterday’s live feed. Nothing out-of-the-ordinary occurred: The Spurs are far too disciplined to drop the media bombs that afflict, say, the Warriors.

And yet as I watched Spurs, both old and new, smile and nod, I got excited. Not just excited. Ecstatic. The season is approaching. Do you realize that? The 2009-10 season. Richard Jefferson. DeJuan Blair. Manu Ginobili. Those are just a few of the guys who are gonna be dressed in silver and black with a ball in their hand, a hoop in either direction and glistening hardwood beneath their feet.

As these thoughts ran through my head, I began pacing around my apartment, hardly able to control myself. And suddenly I realized: I haven’t been bogged down by too much work. I’ve been uninspired by a lack of basketball.

I’m ready to fall in love with this team, and this league, all over again. October 28th can’t come soon enough.

Graydon, Timothy, all Spurs fans… do you know if the preseason game on Oct. 06 will be televised? Can’t Wait!!!

  • Graydon, Tim, thanks for all the writing you do. I appericate a lot, especially since, I live in San Antonio. I can’t tell you enough, how many people read this blog, from SA. We all truly enjoy it!

Thanks for all the hard work. It does not go unnoticed.

  • Amen. I got so excited watching the Spurs live feed yesterday. This summer was excruciating for me for many reasons and the start of training camp seemed so far away. But it’s finally here. I’ve never been as excited for a season to start as this one; although I’m pretty sure I say that every year.

So many new pieces, so many possibilities, so many story lines. I love this team and can’t wait till the first tip off. Life begins anew…..

  • I too would like to express my thanks. I know keeping up a blog is hard work and time consuming, especially if you’re in school. You two have been doing a fantastic job, and you guys are one of the biggest reasons I’m going to try and watch every Spurs game this year.

  • yes i second jose,
this is my main source for spurs news!! tim your the best

  • yea i agree i just learned about this site a few months ago but it is now my primary source for my spurs info…keep up the good work kiddo!!!

  • I have been a Spurs fan for about 15 years (I’m 23 now) and when I discovered this blog it brought me so much closer to the Spurs team and I absolutely enjoy it, I feel like I’m part of it through all of what I get to read right here.

Thanks for the work you put into this blog, it’s worth all of it. I’m studying jouralism too (in Europe) and I think you’re doing a really great job!!!

Can’t wait for the new season to begin I’m so excited about the fact that for once they have been really active on the market. I feel like this season everything is possible (again)!!

    Go Spurs!!!!!

  • As everyone else has written, thank you for your great work, your infectious excitement, and your boundless passion. The offseason was much more fun having your news and commentary available. You’re very much appreciated out here!

    All the best,
    Tom

  • Thank you, and I am also excited for the season! I’ve been excited since June :)

  • can we trade micheal finley, matt bonner, and ian mahmini for stephen jackson. I know he has a bad reputation around the league but he has been a spur before and never lost his cool. Plus he is a physical SF that can shoot 3’s and create his own shot and take it to the rim. I know he would back up Jefferson but it would be a solid pickup in my opinion

  • Echoing the above : this website is an essential for the thinking Spurs fan, and we appreciate your enthusiasm as much as the product itself.

For my part, living away from Texas with a demanding work schedule, there’s only so much I can gather from friends and E-N as to the pulse of the team-hearing from people like Ultimate, Jose, Moving, Jordan et al. on this site is appreciated.

I wish you the best in grad school. Sports can sometimes inspire academics, or at least that’s what I told my parents in high school when I’d stay up well into the night to watch west coast overtime games over calculus homework. Good luck, man.

  • Amen, brother.

I only wish I could make another pilgrimage to SA in 2010, but it looks like 2011 for my final trip to SA during the Duncan era.
