DeJuan Blair: Whirlpool for Loose Limbs
This isn’t a dirty play, but it is dangerous. If you’re like me, thoughts of Hasheem Thabeet came to mind. So much for going over the back of DeJuan Blair.
In all seriousness, notice that the clip begins with Blair hustling to establish position on Carl Landry, who is not such a bad boardsman himself. The rebound was Landry’s to lose.
I predict a future YouTube video that collects a dozen or so highlights of Blair, while in pursuit of a board, coming down with the ball and an opposing player’s arm. Blair is short with a low center of gravity. He establishes great position, and has the size to keep guys on his back. The natural instinct of the man being boxed out will be to go over the back of DeJuan Blair. Or at least to attempt to.
One final thought: In comparison to minutes played, DeJuan Blair will shoot an inordinate number of free throws this season. Why? For the same reason he shoots them in the video clip below. He’ll get fouled on a lot of rebounds, especially on offensive rebound put backs.

He’s a beast! As long as he doesn’t rip Scola’s arm, he will be ok!! (We need Luis for the 2010 worlds)

You’re right, flashbacks of Hasheem Thabeet come rushing to mind. This is the kind of fun that we have to look forward to this season.

I hope that when we play the Clips Pop lets Blair try to handle Griffin one on one for awhile. I think that would be an interesting matchup. To my knowledge, they havent played against each other before. Griffin is taller and more athletic, but Blair has a larger wingspan and a bigger body. i just want to see them go at it, because if Blair gets minutes, he’ll be a ROY candidate, and lets face it most of the other first rounders (i’m looking at you, Thabeet), arent really ROY material.

I like what I see but I’m with Pop on how are we going to use this guy. I’m not sure if we can play him next to timmy without giving up too much.

If Blair and Tim are in at the same time, Blair is in the low post and Tim is in the high post, right? Or would Blair hang out along the baseline like Oberto did, with Tim in the lane?
If the team is moving to a 3 around 2 alignment rather than the 4 and 1 of last year, the placement of the big men will take some thought…And they still have to defend on the other end, which is why a Blair-Bonner combo is prohibitive.

Here is an old post about DeJuan Blair. But still worth sharing.

I see in the future a YouTube montage of super slow-mo replays with the intent to establish that Blair is a dirty player…

Kevin,
Exact same thing I thought of when I saw the title of the video above. I guess DeJuan will be the closest thing we have to eliciting the Bruce Bowen response from opposing fans.

Every minute Tim is on the bench you play Blair. He’ll get the rebounds, which could help for a fast breakin’ second unit.
Let’s see here…Hill, Manu, Ian, Blair, and RJ could be solid. (I’m expecting RJ to lead the team in minutes, so he’ll play with everybody.)

Best part of the video is when Blair banks in the free throw at the end. Haha.

I didn’t know Blair was a finalist for the Wooden award. I’m still amazed that he dropped to us.

I’ll compare the amount of fouls Blair will get to George Hill’s numbers since they both have long arms for their size. From what I can remember, Hill almost always got the foul last season if he went in for the layup.

[...] Timothy Varner of 48 MoH has a video of a DeJuan Blair rebound against Houston. Blair almost broke an arm. [...]

lol grizzly blair banked the basket in on the free throw. you just don’t see that too often these days. It’s a better way to shoot though. GJ blair!

I’ve got a very good vibe about Blair. I could get spanked on this forum for writing this, he reminds me a lot of Barkley in his younger days. Obviously, he doesn’t have Charles lift in his first few NBA years, but the DeJuan has an impecable nose for the ball and a basketball sense beyond his years.
He’s gonna make the season far more fun than anticipated.

Don’t get in the way when the big man wants the ball. You’re gonna love Blair no matter how you play him. You’ll see what we’ve seen over the last few years.
