Other People: Arnovitz Dissects the Spurs Offense

I love when we play the Clippers because my beloved Spurs get treated to the inimitable stylings of Kevin Arnovitz, who is one of my favorite hoops scribes (and, in full disclosure, my brother from another mother). From Clipperblog:

The patented Spurs Corner 3 off the drive-and-kick is a lethal novelty, but the Parker-Duncan screen-roll is an enduring monument. The Clippers choose to trap Parker, with Marcus Camby acutely aware to focus on nothing but the rolling Duncan. What makes Duncan the most fluent low post practitioner of our lifetime is how he eludes even the best help defenders with his agility and touch:

Swing by Clipperblog for more analysis of last night’s victory over the Clippers, which Arnovitz referred to as “vintage Spurs basketball.”

  • Agreed.

Arnovitz, Tom Ziller, yourself and Mr.Varner, are the first ports of call once i get all good and coffeed up in the morning, (and of course Truehoop).

  • Love it.

“Doubling Matt Bonner off the ball is not a winning strategy for an NBA defense.”

  • Arnovitz is the man, heh.

  • Just when you think the Spurs are playing great…. BAM!!! Boy we just cannot win on the road and cannot beat a good team. Manu was lost all over once again. Since we didn’t shoot the 3, we were toast. We can only shoot the 3 when we are wide open. And we didn’t defend the 3s on their end well either. Oh Boy…. its going to be along season. We’ve already lost as many games as the Bulls lost in the entire season when they went 72-10. Ahhh, those were the days….

  • ahhhhh…. move Mcdyess, just standing on the court doing nothing…. so annoying….

  • Once again, George Hill proves he is not an on the ball defender. After Baron Davis puts him on the bench with 2 quick fouls in 3 minutes of play, Nash runs circles around him and forces Pop to sub with Bogans. That possession where Hill just stood behind Nash as he pumped faked 3 times under the basket and shot a layup was sad.

I would’ve preferred to go under the screens so that Nash was a jump shooter and not a penetrator and facilitator creating dunks for Amare and 3’s for everyone else. Make Nash score 30! and stay at home with everyone else.

The Spurs need a defender who can stop a good point guard. We need someone who can cut off the head off the snake. Parker is too small, Bowens too slow, and Hill to ole’… like. The best we have is Ginobili and he can’t play both ends all out for extended periods without getting hurt.

Can we sign Bruce Bowen back for situational defense against playoff caliber point guards like Nash, Chris Paul, Rondo, etc. ??

  • man, we keep talking about our defense, but we have some serious offensive problems also. We have to come to the realization that in the playoffs and finals we will play teams that play good defense and as I can see it, we don’t have a creative enough offense to overcome this problem. Parker had all but 3 assists, that simply will not do. Bonner can shoot the 3, but not really when he’s pressured or off the dribble, our ball movement is non-existing. Its amazing how Nash gets in, and gets a bunch of pick and rolls and gets defenders to switch as he wants to get the best match-ups. Manu didn’t play well, but provided some assists, Jefferson, back to his old self. What good is it if you play well against losing teams. Really, why didn’t we resign Bruce Bowen? The guy wasn’t making that much money. And also, we know we are going to play against phoenix who’s got Mr. Amare and we don’t play Ratliff. I don’t get it. Quarter season gone, and I still don’t know who the heck is going to play. Maybe pop wants to lose against all good teams to surprise during the playoffs. He’s surely confusing me….
