Phoenix Suns 110, San Antonio Spurs 113

San Antonio began the fourth quarter of this afternoon’s game against Phoenix with a three point lead. Over the next 12 minutes, the Spurs did not make too many defensive stops; Amare Stoudemire, Steve Nash, and Jason Richardson all scored with ease. Luckily the Suns aren’t exactly known for their lockdown defense either, and the [...]

A Look at the Austin Experiment in Houston

Over the course of the season Gregg Popovich has shuffled through 20 different lineups with varying degrees of success, or in the case of Friday night’s lineup, lack thereof. A degree in advanced NBA statistics or a talk with Wayne Winston isn’t necessary to conclude a box score in which three of the five starters [...]

Bakersfield Jam 107, Austin Toros 96

A lot was different for the Toros on Saturday night at the Austin Convention Center. There were new players to fit into the lineup and a national television crew, something not often found at the D-League level. In their only nationally-televised game this season, the Toros struggled to acclimate three new players in their rotation, [...]

Houston Rockets 109, San Antonio Spurs 104

Ugh. Here I was, all ready to post a piece about how Manu Ginobili’s block of Kevin Durant against the Thunder on Wednesday was the turning point in the season. After their latest “best win of the season,” the Spurs were going to sweep the week against their Western Conference foes and solidify their place [...]

Former Spur Robertson charged with sexual assault, child trafficking

Via ESPN: Former NBA All-Star Alvin Robertson has been charged with sexual assault of a child, trafficking an underage child for purposes of sex and forcing a sexual performance by a child. The charges were contained in an arrest warrant Friday. Robertson has not been apprehended. Although we don’t often touch upon off-the-court issues, we [...]

The Power of $3

“The power of $3.” That’s a line David Robinson dropped on me in a recent conversation regarding a current Carver Academy fundraiser. Robinson is asking Spurs fans to donate as little as $3 to the work of the Carver Academy. Robinson has personally donated 10 million. San Antonio’s Hall of Fame center is thinking about [...]

“GINOBILI!”

For a season that started with such promise, Spurs fans sure have been left clamoring for some positive news following some of the unfortunate, potentially disheartening and even depressing stories that have been written this season. Even the Rodeo Road Trip, the mythical cure for all that ails the Spurs, ended with disappointing losses at Philadelphia [...]

The Spurs and Morey

One of my favorite pieces of blogging this season is Rahat Huq’s ongoing series Discerning Morey’s Philosophy. The Spurs’ front office success over the last decade-arguably the best front office in sports over that span-has given rise to a constant curiosity: what makes a great front office? There is no right answer to the question, [...]

Notes from Wayne Winston, part 2

Recently, 48MoH has discussed the struggles of San Antonio’s interior defense. Please see The Roots of Defensive Decline and The Root of All Defensive Evil for discussion of these points. But a struggling interior defense is often an indication of a prior breakdown on the perimeter, which seems to be the case with San Antonio this season, Manu Ginobili’s [...]

Ginobili Blocks Durant, Walks on Water

Although this play will define Ginobili’s night in the minds of most, it’s worth mentioning that it was only one instance from a prolonged period during which Manu absolutely owned the court.

Preview: Thunder @ Spurs

Coming into the season, most assumed the Thunder would eventually become contenders, it was just a matter of when. The Spurs were put on a different clock, counting down the time they have left as a relevant basketball powerhouse. Tonight the Spurs hope to show that those times have not arrived sooner than expected. For [...]

Episode 3 of the 48MoH Podcast: Southwest Conference

In the third installment of the 48 Minutes of Hell Podcast, Rob Mahoney of The Two Man Game drops in to talk about how the Mavs’ new toys are working out up in Dallas, the dilemma of a team’s star player playing for their national team in the offseason, and if the Spurs strike any [...]

Spurs Face a Possible Bidding War For Splitter

Already having trouble in keeping up with the arms race at home, the Spurs may soon find themselves locked in a bidding war with deeper pockets overseas. Spurs fans hoping for a foreign born center to add to the rotation next year might have to settle on another season of hoping for Ian Mahinmi to [...]

The Root of All Defensive Evil

Saying that the Spurs aren’t playing as good of defense this year as they have in the past would be like saying it doesn’t snow much in Austin. By the way, it’s snowing here in Austin today. But why exactly are the Spurs not playing good defense? It starts in the middle, quite literally.

What is a Strained Left Iliopsoas?

I’m not sure. But Tony Parker has it. The Spurs just released a statement that reads, “An MRI performed during the exam [this morning] showed that Parker has a mild strain of his left iliopsoas.” He’s day-to-day.
