The 48 Minutes of Hell Podcast - Episode 1: Getting Our Feet Wet… And Almost Drowning [Update]
One of my goals / interests when I started writing at 48 Minutes of Hell was to do more multimedia on the site. As great as the written word is, sometimes sitting around and talking is just as good and sometimes a nice change of pace.
So on Wednesday night, the 48 Minutes of Hell team got together, virtually that is, and recorded our first podcast.
Things got off to a rough start but we righted the ship and got in a good hour of Spurs conversation for your listening pleasure.
Hopefully, the podcast will soon be available in iTunes, so I’ll let you know when that is. And of course, if you’ve got any feedback for us, make sure to let us know in the comments section.
We’re planning on recording our second podcast next week, if you have any questions you’d like answered in next week’s show, leave a comment and I’ll try and pull a couple good ones for us to discuss.
UPDATE: We are now in iTunes. Make sure you subscribe to it and leave us a good rating / comments, assuming you actually like the podcast, that is.

I think Avery would be an excellent coach for the Spurs…

Excited to hear about the podcast. Please just promise that you won’t turn into the Sports Guy and stop writing articles in favor of these podcasts!

Not to worry folks, the podcast will be a once-a-week thing and only to compliment the writing on the site.
Plus, it will eventually enable us to get some great guests for you guys to listen to also.

Great podcast, 4 people might be too many especially since we’ve never heard your voices before. Towards the end it got a little easier to recognize who was talking.
February 11th, 2010 at 8:09 am
Enjoyed it, thanks! Looking forward to future podcasts.
February 11th, 2010 at 8:40 am
I enjoyed the Podcast, makes it easier to work and listen than reading while doing no work
Keep up the good job guys!!!
p.s. Chicago Winters suck!!!!

Andrew - I’m glad you’ve finally seen the light on trading Manu. I was hoping that when you finally started thinking clearly, you would come around.

JT I thought I would share my story on how I became a fan of the Spurs.
Being from Chicago I watch Michael Jordan rule the world, after he left in 1998, I didn’t really follow the NBA much, but in 2005 I got to watch the Spurs and appreciated the classiness they bought to the game.
My most hated team in the NBA is the Detroit Pistons, not just because of the Bulls-Pistons rivalry, but because it was ghetto and thuggish, to me the players had no class and were just a bunch of bullies. I fell in love with the Spurs organization and the way they carry themselves, Timmy’s character as well as all other players they franchise has brought in has made me appreciate this team.
Lucky for me I got to enjoy 2 more championships with them. I’m a little obsessed with the Spurs though, my wife keeps reminding me
Anyone else want to share their story…
You guys should keep an ongoing blog on the side for “Spurs Conversion” stories, lol

Not to sound stupid, but how do I download the podcast? I don’t see anything to click on. There is a blank space between the 3rd and 4th paragraphs. Maybe my work computer just isn’t showing the link.
February 11th, 2010 at 9:33 am
Instead of podcast, I request video conference -a face like Jesse’s isn’t made for the radio… get him out behind the bright lights! He’s a STAR!!
February 11th, 2010 at 9:54 am
Mike T,
There should be a little icon in between the 3rd and fourth paragraphs. If it isn’t showing up, I’d suggest switching to another browser. Aside from that, I’m not sure what to tell ya- I’m not the most tech savvy of the 48 Minutes of Hell crew.

Many of you think Manu should be traded. I disagree and here’s why:
He’s the soul of the team. He’s part of “the secret” Simmons wrote about in his book.
He’s been hurt and is having good numbers in February. The Spurs have never been good starters and Manu either, so he’s saving himself. The playoffs are what counts!!! Let’s get rid of RJ, I don’t care if it’s for pennies on the dollar (he brings negativity to this team). Manu is loved and he’s the only one who actually seems like he’s trying!!! Everyone else is just passive. They show no emotion. He’s the only spark we have and you all want him gone?!?! You must be out of your minds. Look at his numbers in 2010: They’re good numbers!!! If anything we should be on Pop for not playing him more. Enough with the “off the bench” experiment!!! It worked the first year, not the 2nd 3rd and 4th years. If he’s gonna “walk” next year, then at least give him 35mpg and see what he can do!!!
I’d like to see comments on this, please.

OK guys, no offense, but I’m not partial to media (audio and/or video). Just my preference to spend 2 minutes to read a story vs. 5 minutes (or more) to listen/view the same story. But don’t go by me, I know that a lot of folks will love this.
That being said, I have a couple of technical comments:
1. is there anyway for the user to control the “autoplay”
2. I realize that having a “free” hoster has it’s limitations, but is there anyway to control the ad content? Was the weight loss ad a dig at me? LOL. I would hate for them to go to the “spam” level (ie: E.D., work from home, hair loss/teeth whitening). It’s not just your site, even the NYT has has this problem.
3. Anyway to have a direct download link in addition to iTunes store?
Thanks for listening and keep up the good work!
@JT: I don’t think you want to hear my “fan story”. It would be a real snoozer, going back to when the Chaps were rented for one season, before the Drossos group bought them. You’d be forced to read about getting vertigo while climbing down from the nosebleed seats at the old arena, among others.

I needed some time to find out who was talking sometimes but very interesting podcast. And I even managed to get other stuff done while listening.

I might be available to be a guest, get with my people.
Here is a link that Chad Ford thinks would help the Bulls and the Spurs
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=TradeWatch-100211
Here is an excert:
3. Bulls-Spurs
Chicago gets: Matt Bonner, Roger Mason, Michael Finley, draft rights to Tiago Splitter
San Antonio gets: John Salmons, Tyrus Thomas
Would Chicago do it?
On the surface, it might seem that the Bulls would get killed in this deal because the Spurs would be getting the two best players in the trade.
But the Bulls have good reason to move Salmons and Thomas, neither of whom is in the team’s long-term plans: The Bulls want the cap space such a trade would provide. Chicago can set itself up to be a serious player in free agency this summer, given the appeal of the market and the foundation of Derrick Rose, Luol Deng and Joakim Noah.
Bonner and Mason, who have expiring contracts, could contribute this season, and Splitter is a good prospect who could come in and help the Bulls in the middle next season. As a former first-round draft pick who has established himself in Europe, he might fit the bill if the Bulls are looking to get talent and/or picks in return for Thomas.
And then, if they can pull off trade No. 4 (see below), the Bulls could be in great position going into the summer shopping season. Chicago could be an attractive destination for the likes of James, Wade and Bosh or, at worst, players like Joe Johnson and David Lee.
Would San Antonio do it?
Maybe. The team needs immediate help, as they get older and fall behind the rest of the West. Both Salmons and Thomas would give the Spurs some younger legs, with Salmons also providing offensive punch and Thomas some defense and rebounding.
Thomas’ problems in getting along with his coaches have been well-documented, but perhaps he would respond better to a coach like Gregg Popovich and a veteran team led by Tim Duncan. If so, Thomas could become a huge asset to the Spurs over the long haul.
The Spurs rarely make trades like this, but I can’t think of a better one for them right now.
“““““““““““““
This is a deal I would consider minus giving up Splitter’s rights, I think the fact that we would be taking on Salmons contract would be a big enough factor for the Spurs to bite, especially if they are also looking at letting go of Hinrich in another deal for more expirings.
The Spurs would then have Salmons to split time with Jefferson at the 3 spot with TP, Manu and George Hill all getting the backcourt minutes.
Anything Thomas would give us this season would be a bonus and I think he will take his qualifying offer of $6 million which would preserve the Spurs intention of not taking on deals that go past the current CBA.

@wannabe_fan
Those are all valid comments.
As much as I’d like to completely produce our own podcast free of ad content that is out of our control, right now we simply don’t have the time or resources to do it. Hopefully someday though.

Andrew, that link has a podcast from next Wednesday. Is 48MoH powered by a flux capacitor?
February 11th, 2010 at 11:44 am
@Rowrbazzle
The first episode is right below it. And yes, we are powered by a flux capacitor.

1.21 GIGAWATTS!
I enjoyed the podcast. Well, as much as one can enjoy a podcast featuring talk of trading Ginobili and Popovich and Duncan retiring. haha
Thanks for all the hard work, guys.
February 11th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
Hope this sticks around.
Two things:
-Gotta cut down the number of voices. Maybe Andrew could host and have a different member of the crew on each week, in addition to a short guest segment?
-Should probably cut down the length, but I think that’ll happen naturally with the whole thing being streamlined and fewer people on the ‘cast.
A noble first attempt though, and looking forward to hearing more, gents.

I think Pop goes when Duncan goes and whoever comes in to coach will have a massive rebuilding task, similar to when Jordan retired the 2nd time and Pippen and Jackson took off too. Duncan is the Spurs.
I don’t blame Pop too much except for expecting his team to perform, similar to anger we all get trying to get the team on our X-box to perform. RJ needs a smaller role, off the bench, and then maybe we can get 40% 3Pt out of him. But requiring defense and a starter’s role on a championship team from RJ has been overwhelming and I have no confidence that he can turn it around this season. Of all struggling players on the team, I see RJ as the last person capable of playing at the championship level.
Trading Manu would be hard. Every team knows he’s hurt, plays summer ball, $$$, and can’t do the same things we loved to see him do. Sadly I think the whole team is in a position of being really hard to trade away this year.
Fan story: Born and raised in Idaho. Sean Elliott came to Boise, playing for Arizona, in March Madness. Got his autograph with my older brother. I was really young. Followed him to the NBA. Robinson came along to make things better. Duncan came along to make things REALLY better.

Nice job on the POD CAST. Once a week is a cool idea.
I disagree with whoever it was that said he’d rather see the SPURS in the lottery then gut put out in the first round.
They should at least make the Playoffs. ANything can happen.
I know we’ve been saying this all season but if they can get into a groove especially right before the playoffs start then it could be fun to watch.
February 11th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Wow, to find out a couple of members of the 48 MOH staff are sports bigomists floored me. Even the founder, Graydon, as recently as 2006? I need to find a blog with some lifers.
Just kidding, guys. I was also at the Memorial Day Miracle, and can understand how a moment like that will swing one over. Going from the Hemisphair, which was the loudest arena in the NBA at that time, to the cavernous Alamo dome was a big time dip in home court advantage. But that was the loudest I remember ever hearing that place. It was amazing.
Great podcast in all. Thanks, guys.
February 11th, 2010 at 2:09 pm
Do you feel like Ian Mahinmi could make an impact on the spurs team this year if given playing time?
Odd that you would mention Cory Alexander and baseball, because he was actually my little brothers assistant baseball coach last year at Tuckahoe Little League.
February 11th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
On the next Podcast when you talk about why Pop isn’t playing Ian, Ratliff and why he hasn’t entered Hairston into the lineup?
Are these guys not showing enough, is he saving them for the playoffs (cough, cough)
Thanks guys!!!
February 11th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
Correction: mean “can you talk”
February 11th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
I think the Manu/Jason Kidd comparison is pretty close to spot on. Manu might not provide the scoring he used to, but he brings enough to the table we HAVE to get something major back if we do trade him. He is still our best perimeter playmaker. I’m definitely not a parker hater, but Manu is much better at getting teammates involved and making things happen on the court. I’d rather have what Manu is giving us than what Tony is giving us.
Our biggest issue is RJ. I know there isnt much we can do with him, but i would almost rather just play Finley at the 3 and go small the rest of the time. Has Finley been any worse on D than RJ this season? Not from what i’ve seen. He definitely isnt any worse on offense either. Start Finley, play Hairston, give RJ what’s left of the minutes.
February 11th, 2010 at 2:59 pm
The Problem is not with Manu, his contract will give the most value, but trading him will not help for whats going on with the Spurs right now. What do you expect from Gino, to be the Number 1 guy. Thats Tim Duncans job, Parker obviously has lost a step due to injury and what not, Manu is slowly creeping to form, and trading him, you will only lose alot! How many players in the league, right now can you get for a trade in Manu, and actually get more out of it! not to many! He is capable to get to form. The problem is Jefferson, and company. He has not lived to his expectation, and does not play good enough D for his size! 15 million dollars penalized the Spurs organization beyond then just money, it tainted the team with guys like Jefferson, Bogans! IMO, it looks like they is doubt with this team, Doubt within them selves, and its hurting the team badly.
February 11th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
This “trade manu” sentiment is madness.
February 11th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
Chicago would never make that trade. I agree with you that they may want to get rid of Tyrus/Salmons, but the problem is that they can get a lot more from other teams than crap players like finley/bonner/mason/etc. No point in giving them away for nothing but cap space.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:24 pm
i have a question:
how important do ya’ll think it is for the spurs to hold onto tiago splitter’s rights? chad ford’s trade speculation is identical to one suggested on this site, with the exception ford sends splitter to the bulls and the writer here suggested ian mahinmi.
personally, i feel like i’ve waited long enough for splitter to join the team that i just want to see it happen. it feels like the scola debacle all over again. i don’t know what splitter can be (or even what he is now, but i hear good things, i guess), whereas i think tyrus thomas is now what he’ll always be.
i’ll take thomas over mahinmi, but i have an almost irrational attachment to splitter, mostly because i think the spurs would be a much better team this year and during the last two seasons with scola on the roster.

Bryan,
I said I had a David Robinson jersey on my wall as a kid growing up, and was on the cover of the Express-News as a ten-year-old holding up a “Go Spurs” sign. What more do you want?
February 12th, 2010 at 11:13 am
Graydon,
Bryan wants a lifer. Your evidence does not account for the first 10 years of your life. We could revisit this if you provide us with a baby pic of urs in express-news holding a “Go Spurs” sign.
