If we do trade for Ty Thomas, we get to see how his IQ, work ethic, coachability indicate if we make an offer on him during the summer… regarding whether he is a bust or just a late bloomer, the fact is he is already an upgrade on defense, and thus a clear upgrade over Bonner overall. For me the question is will his defense eventually become all NBA Defensive team caliber? If so, his 10 points on offense is almost a bonus, though his ceiling on offense could be higher than that.
Re: “I am increasingly interested in long-term value, and guys who are younger, and have some upside”… I 2nd that!…With TT on the roster, I am looking for both he and Blair to get 30 minutes every game! Same for Hill, and RMj or whichever young guys we look to in his stead. No excuses. Remember Splitter may never be more than a fantasy.
Thanks guys for saying “point guard, front court player, and an upgrade over Finley” are the areas of need. And seeing that losing RMj is “a dangerous proposition” and even more so re: Manu.

Deals that may make sense for both teams:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ygddr7o
Pros for Spurs:
1) Youth
2) Size at two-guard, perimeter defense.
3) Veteran scoring/rebounding presence/depth in the paint
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yf59k6y
Pros for Spurs:
1) Youth/athleticism, additional depth in front court
2) Defense/Shot-blocking around the basket, and/or weakside

Point guard is an area of need on this team… list of playmakers that their team would never trade straight up for tony parker:
A Brooks, C Paul, S Nash, R Westbrook, D Williams, C Billups, S Curry, A Miller, T Evans, B Jennings, D Wade, D Rose… that’s 12, and I there’s at least 12 more that teams would have to think long and hard about whether or not they would consider a swap.

Here is a thought…No trade at all. We have dead weight on our bench that we couldnt trade for a kit-kat. So lets put the trade machine on hold. How about playing the guys that we have? I cant stomach anymore of this Pop driven bull. Play Mahinmi, Ratliff, and Hairston. Cut back with the Bogans, Bonner experiment. It doesnt work, period! Put the best players on the court. I couldnt realistically play Bonner over Ratliff if Im serious about winning. Give me guts, defense, and rebounding over 1 or 2 three point shots any day of the week. Again, this slide is not player driven. We all know it. Time to end the blind support for this FO and coach. Right now, what you did for us yesterday is played out.

chicago is looking to deal pargo also.
a trade of pargo, salmons, thomas for bonner, fin, mason, ian, bogans, and hairston works.
trade machines gives us 3 more wins with this trade.
February 17th, 2010 at 6:19 am
I seen that they wanted to trade Pargo as well…
I like that deal you just mentioned…
I would do it!
February 17th, 2010 at 6:40 am
me three!! good deal
February 17th, 2010 at 6:44 am
Is it just me, or does trading six guys for three seem, well… stupid. Nevermind the fact that that would make meeting the league requirement for roster number difficult for the Spurs, but does anybody seriously think Pargo has a chance at making a rotation here? I can understand Thomas and, to a certain extent, Salmons (after all, we drafted him). But Pargo? Seriously?
February 17th, 2010 at 7:08 am
you would have no problem making league minimums, considering only 4 of those players are active. you would only be losing one spot. hell maybe pick up ricky davis for league minimum to fill that one spot.
ian, and hairston NEVER get pt, and ian is no long dleague eligible. hairston will not be after this season, and while he is decent he is still a d league talent and not much more.
as for pargo getting minutes, sure he would. starting 5; TP, hill, RJ, TD, dice. reserves pargo, manu, salmons, blair, thomas and ratliff also. thats 11 players 2 solid rotations and the league minimum is 8.
then if they wanted to sign ricky “im a jacker” davis to a prorated vet minimum, we could have that token crazy freak who can hit outside shots. not always but when he is hot he can fill it up.

Guys..I came across this footage of Marcus Haislip now playing in greece. I knew this kid could play. With this roster, it boggles my mind that the Spurs didnt see the value in giving this kid 10 minutes a game. I will let you guys judge this one:

here is one I just checked that worked, bulls want t-mac and rockets want more than whats being offered, so spurs help… bulls get t-mac and from spurs RMj, rockets get from bulls, thomas, salmons, miller and from spurs, rockets get bonner and mcdyess… and for the FAVOR in return we get OUR FAVOR returned and rockets send us louis SCOLA
February 17th, 2010 at 7:25 am
problem with haislip, he wanted more then 10 minutes.
and while he looks good in greece, its not MUCH better then the d league, where ian was a beast. being able to beat a bunch of euros isnt real “amazin”
February 17th, 2010 at 7:30 am
RangerJohn…Hairston is a player. Dont let this coach cloud your judgement. Hairston is leading the D league in scoring. He is quick, strong jumper, good shooter, good ball handler, decent defender, finishes well, and is nasty at the rim.
People are talking trades invlolving Parker and Mason. Parker is a beast. He is not the prototypical point guard. He is a 2 guard with the ability to play the point. The only weak link in his game is that he should have more assists. Other than that, he is franchise! Mason is a baller and other than Ginnobli, he is the best 2 guard on this roster. If we were really serious about winning, we would be looking to unload players that just arent productive. Bogans, and Bonner are killing us. They should be gone. Finley should still be getting at least 10 minutes a game, and there is no excuse whatsoever for releasing Haislip, not playing Mahinmi and Ratliff, and not incorporating Mcdyess and Blair into the offense.
Not to worry. What has been going on behind the scenes in San Antonio will soon come to light.. When it does, we will be blogging until our fingers bleed about this coach.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:34 am
Jim- How does Utah get any “pros” in your first trade idea? In other words why would they do this trade?
For us its a hell of a deal. I would love to see that happen. In fact Im sending it to my PS3 right now on 2K10
February 17th, 2010 at 7:36 am
Ballhog- Dont let Bushka hear you talk about Bonner in that light. He’s the cornerstone for NBA title run 2011
February 17th, 2010 at 7:37 am
rangerjohn, would you too take The Red Rocket over guys like Mensah Bonsu, Scola, and Haislip? While playing college basketball, I learned that most players just need an opportunity and some positive motivation to produce. Maybe Im clueless on this, but it just seems to me that had Pop used this roster effectively from the start of the season, he would have a much more competitive team now. Haislip, Ratliff and Mahinmi could have really healp Duncan in the paint this year and Hairston would give us athleticism at the 2 spot that we just dont have. This coach chooses Bogans instead….Help me out here mannnnnnnn.
February 17th, 2010 at 8:23 am
The only person we could trade RJ for for is T-Mac. I’ve probably played more minutes on an NBA court recently than him. Or we could trade straight up for Vince Carter with Orlando, trade every half-year until contracts expire?
February 17th, 2010 at 8:34 am
Haha I’m down for an RJ straight up for T-Mac even though it doesnt exactly match up financially. Also I’ve been thinking about all the trade TP talk in here, and I wouldnt want to because we’re essentially trading Eva too! She’s a great part of going to the games!
On a more serious note, if we’re already looking into trade talks with the Bulls then why not try and use our expiring contracts for another future player to go along with Thomas? The Bulls are trying to dump off Kirk Hinrich’s contract too, and he would give us a solid SG starter and a great 3 point shooter. The deal would encompass Tyrus Thomas and Kirk Hinrich for Bonner McDyess Finley and Mason. It works out in the trade machine and even is in our advantage for the +/-. This also allows the Bulls to dump some contracts and bring in the big superstar they want this summer.

Some strange comments on here. Why on earth would Morey trade Scola to us? U must be high… Haislip did get some burn and looked a little lost out there in garbage time. Athletic… yes; NBA player? I’m not too sure. These guys are seen in practice every day by coaching staff. He was not the savior of this team as Pops (Bonsu) was not either. We loved Pops’ athleticism but he’s not exactly taking the league by storm. Rockets released him this year and now he’s in Toronto doing not much of anything. If Haislip comes back to the NBA I’m willing to bet his numbers are just like Pops (near nothing). Hairston may have some game, unlike Haislip he has showed a very solid game in pre-season and played well in his NBA garbage time minutes. He’s also showing he is above the developmental league. This kid deserves a chance. I do agree with the criticism of Coach Pop on here. The Red Rocket is a very valuable asset for this team AS A BENCH PLAYER. Pop using him as a starter was an absolute failure. Having him gaurd the opposing team’s best C/FWD is a recipe for disaster. Having him come off the bench against weaker players has proved to be very effective. His 3 is essential to stretch the floor. I’ve been super critical of him, but he is a solid BENCH player for the Spurs and not the reason we are losing. Pop’s fascination with Finley is beyond me. As soon as he checks into a game you can be assured you will see a layup off a pick and roll and Fin will be in the dust. He’s been notorious for horrible defense and that was in the prime of his career. He’s old as dirt now. I doubt he will be traded because there is such an amount of manlove Pop has with this guy. Stop the trade talks about Bogans. He was supposed to be “Bruce Bowen lite.” He is not, he’s terrible. His contract is not expiring and we are stuck with him. I only hope if we trade for a big he’s over 5′9″ since Pop has been in love with small ball this year and that is killing us.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:23 am
Why are we holding on to Manu? We’re probably not going to win it all this year and Manu’s probably going to walk this summer anyways. As he has already hinted several times he’s going to look at it more from a business and not being loyal and accepting less. The Spurs will have nothing to offer him and there will be a few teams who will offer him more than the Spurs can.
February 17th, 2010 at 9:56 am
Trade Richard Jefferson for Al Jefferson from the Timberwolves. You add youth and help for Duncan. Next year maybe you get Tiago Splitter to come and play in the NBA, you steal another hidden gem in the draft like hill and blair. convince manu to stay and you can make a title run.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:18 am
A lot of trades make sense.
Im just gonna wait to see what they do.
See you guys on Friday.
February 17th, 2010 at 11:18 am
sorry ballhog had to get some work done.
to answer one of your questions, i would ABSOLUTELY take bonner over pops, and 6-7 out of 10 times over haislip. scola on the other hand NO WAY but then scola never played a game for us, and was to much money (well more then what bonner has cost us) to bring in.
as for ian and ratlif and haislip sitting on the bench, ian is a walking foul, i mean the guy is more foul prone then any player i can remember in the silver and black. what good is getting on teh floor if you cant stay there. both he and haislip are dominant for sure against lesser opponents and while they have potential neither are good shooters, and athleticism can only get you so far. then there is theo, that guy like like what 49 yrs old? people talk about how he WAS a league leader in blocks, well hell so was robinson, maybe we should bring him back, they are darn near the same age. how about hakeem, maybe we can get him too. point is, he cant handle minutes, but i do expect he sees more PT as we get closer to the end of the season. he is a decent defender and will pull duty when he is needed.
as for hairston, no doubt he is a solid 2nd/3d stringer but is he a starter? nope. he might be able to take some minutes from bogans but IMO he is more of a trade prospect then a solid spur. he will never be a real contributer to this team, if he could then he would have already taken those minutes.
keep in mind, unless you are an assistant coach or in the media or what not you dont see how these do in practice, all you see is the few minutes they get, or read in a box score. EVERYONE can look real good in 5 minutes of PT. the coaches see these guys play daily. put it this way, if hairson where to take bogans or finleys, or masons spots he would have to be killing those guys in practice, and obviously he never has or he would be the one playing.

Trade TP:
For the 1st trade, with the Jazz, unfortunately when I clicked back on the link, the trade didn’t come up. I’m not sure exactly who the the Spurs players were that I proposed to trade. But here it is again, the best from memory: Ginobli, Bonner, Ratliff, & Bogans, for Boozer, Brewer, & Mathews.
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yfrua7b
New Jazz starting five would be:
Williams, Ginobli, Kirilenko, Okur, & Milsap
Rotation: Bonner, Miles, Korver, Price, & Ratliff. They also have Koufos & Fesenko as additional “Bigs”.
Pros for Jazz:
1) Milsap is young and entirely capable of taking over for Boozer (35-40 minutes per game); Milsap is awesome!
2) Ginobli playing with Williams? Now that’s truly scary!
3) They get at top 3-point shooter big man off the bench in Bonner to come off the bench, oe even team with Okur on occasion. Talk about spreading the floor!
4) Bogans can help temper the loss of Brewer’s perimeter “D”, and Ratlif can give them some veteran depth and shot blocking in the paint.
Fact is, Jazz are committed to Milsap (4 years). They’re going to lose Boozer anyway, but could very well have the ability to resign Ginobli (although they’re going to need to add some size/depth in frontline this summer as well, but they’ll still have 6+ million in expiring contracts [Korver, Fesenko] to work on that).
Sure, it’s not a perfect deal (e.g., I’d rather have a better defender/shotblocker than Boozer down low), but it could ultimately help both teams.

For those that were curious, here’s the Craig Sager video that Graydon was referring to early in the podcast: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Video-Craig-Sager-interviews-Nash-Craig-Sager-?urn=nba,219986

ok just read on espn that the heat and spurs were working a deal to trade mason for nothing more then a draft pic and a trade exception. in other words strictly cap room. this is scary to me, that to me is a signal they are not confident in this season at all. if they are looking to cut cap/tax money and not try to get someone to attempt to help the team while offering one of our best shooters, THATS NOT GOOD! kind of reminds me of how we lost scola for nothing more then cap space, now look at him and how many of us would love to have him on the team.
