Springfield Armor 108, Austin Toros 111
Not even 24 hours after debuting a rotation boasting three recently-acquired players, the Austin Toros beat the Springfield Armor in overtime 111-108.
Both the Toros’ offense and defense appeared to recover from Saturday’s disappointing loss to Bakersfield, as Austin went into the fourth quarter with a 15-point lead and held the Armor to just 62 points.
But in the fourth, Springfield cut off the driving lanes that were available to Austin in the third and outscored the Toros 38-23 in the quarter to force the extra period.
“We lost our focus, we started turning it over on offense and that allowed them to get back in the game,” forward Dwayne Jones said after the game.
Springfield actually had a three-point lead with 23 seconds remaining, but Toros forward Eddie Basden was able to drive to the hoop, score and draw the foul to tie the game.
In overtime, the driving lanes seemed to reopen and both Jones and Alonzo Gee converted the fabled, “old fashioned three-point play.” As a team, the Toros were 7 of 8 from the free throw line in overtime.
Jones barely missed out on another 20-20 game, when he scored 24 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Toros. Gee had 26 points, eight rebounds and three steals, and point guard Curtis Jerrells added 21 points, nine assists and four rebounds.
Justin Hawkins led the Armor with 36 points and six rebounds in his 53 minutes of play.
