these guys know what they are talking about. i don’t think anyone is saying “throw ian in there, he will be ok”. he will struggle, but he’s at least worth getting a look.
Agreed…However, what are they talking about? Ian has been here for three years. He isnt lost in the offense, he isnt stupid either. Playing this kid for 6-10 minutes when we are playing big teams is a no brainer.
Better than watching Bonner get taken to the rack over and over, or trying to match the 6′7 Blair up with 7 footers.
Much as I hate to admit it, 1st round exit is likely.
Hopefully we will still have enough players to finish the season.
These guys engage in the classic tactic of creating a straw man and then knocking him over. I know of no one who is saying that Ian and Malik (and Haislip before them) are our saviors and should be starting or playing major minutes. What I’ve read here and other places is GIVE THEM A FUCKING CHANCE! These guys can’t say that they can’t cut it. They haven’t been given the opportunity to show whether they can or not. And don’t bring up the bullshit argument that the coaches see them in practice. Practice is not a game and it is impossible to predict how one will perform in game circumstances, and more importantly, against specific opponents, until they actually go head-to-head. Who would have predicted that Malik would have completely shut down Kevin Martin when Bogans, Hill, TP and no one else could? The point is that the first half of the season was experiment time but these guys never were given the opportunity to see what they could do, information that could be enormously helpful come playoff time. You can’t TELL ME that these guys are not good NBA material because you know no more than me. You haven’t seen them play in real game circumstances any more than I have. I could easily be convinced if I got to watch them on the court against first rate opponents. That’s how I became convinced that Fin was done, that Bonner sucks. After all, had Houston not picked up Luis Scola and he would have remained in Europe, we all would still be thinking that he wasn’t quite NBA material and couldn’t possibly work on the court alongside Tim Duncan instead of puking every time he kicks our ass.
I just want to say, I’ve believed that over the course of the regular season Mahinmi and Hairston could have been getting those 9th or 10th man minutes in a spot rotation. At least, I believe I said that in the discussion.
There were a lot of good things to take from that Houston game. But there were the mistakes too. And over the next few weeks, I really think the Spurs should look at giving those two some run on those back to back nights when you have to rest a Duncan or Ginobili a little.
But with an 8-man rotation for the playoffs? I’m not sure that the two are ready. But who knows? Perhaps in those second halves of the back to back games they show something. But again, this is just going off of one game which is a small sample of information as was mentioned in my last post.
I dont think Ian doesnt know the system, he has been with SA for 3yrs already. What I notice from his brief appearences on the floor is that he is still nervous. He should be allowed 5-10 min a game to get comfortable. Malik is very athletic and should take some of Bogans minutes, but I doubt that will happen.
This team has been the definition of inconsistency all season, but if they end up being the 7th seed, I dont see any reason they cannot beat a Nuggets or Mavs team. As of right now they are better teams, but common guys its the Nuggets and Mavs.
@rj, why would any coach in their right mind throw in a player who will be known to struggle?
@Ballhog, you’re right, seeing Mahinmi get 5 fouls in 15 minutes would be a lot better then Bonners not so great D
@agutierrez, Ballhog two 48MoH posts ago stated that Hairston is the teams best 2 guard. And people all over are saying Hairston should take over for Bogans. There are other posters out there that are actually saying Hairston should start (see comments: http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/03/01/stein-spurs-release-michael-finley/) The round table didn’t create a strawman.
I dont know about first round exit. I like what jess said about it depending on Manu and Tony being able to play at a high level they need in order to be succesful in the playoffs. I honestly think they can make it to the WCF, and if they are rolling on all cylinders then, i like their chances in getting to the finals! It will be tough, but if everyone plays with confidence and the chemistry looks good, i like the Spurs chances! Alot depends on how they fair against the top teams they play for the remainder of the season!
@ mike. it’s part of the growing/rebuilding process. you can’t always expect a young pup to play seemlessly, unless you are dejuan blair….but considering how our season is going, we should at least get a look at him, and ideally, on those back to backs as jesse suggested. we aren’t talking about game seven, under a minute to go
what’s wrong with seeing hairston cut into bogans’ minutes? bogans hasn’t exactly solidified himself in the rotation either. hairston is definately not a starter
