Curtis Jerrells called up to Spurs, sent down to Austin
If the headline is a little confusing, then you’re on the right track. The San Antonio Spurs called up point guard Curtis Jerrells from the Austin Toros today. And immediately reassigned him to the Toros.
The San Antonio Spurs have signed guard Curtis Jerrells from the team’s NBA D-League affiliate Austin Toros and immediately assigned him back to the NBA D-League team, it was announced today. The GATORADE Call-Up and assignment are both firsts for Jerrells in his career. The call-up and assignment are the 27th and 32nd, respectively, of the 2009-10 NBA D-League season. With the assignment, Jerrells joins Erie BayHawks guard Blake Ahearn as the only players to have been called-up and assigned in the same season.
Our guy Scott Schroeder at Ridiculous Upside did a good job of explaining everything in his post today, and there’s not a lot to add to it. According to ShamSports, the Spurs paid a sizable training camp contract to Jerrells, probably to entice him to stay with the Toros in the Spurs organization this season and not join another team or go abroad for more money.
They obviously see enough in him to want to keep him in silver and black. He can’t help the Spurs this year, but signing him to a contract with San Antonio allows the Spurs to bring Jerrells along for the playoffs. It also keeps another team from swooping in and calling him up, like when the Washington Wizards called up Alonzo Gee several weeks ago.
Jerrells will be in uniform for the Toros tonight against the Springfield Armor.

I was going ‘what the hell?’ after reading the news saying he was assigned to the Toros after being signed up. Thanks for clearing that up.

When Jerrells steps into the Toros’ gym, Quin Snyder will say “Welcome back!” and Jerrells will be staring blankly at him.

@GMT
That’s kinda what happened before the game tonight.

Is Timmy done?
March 24th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
I think Timmy needs to hang them up!!
They want to get rid of Manu, what a joke, he’s the only guy with any soul. Timmy shot the dummest shots ever, if he’s got a 7 footer defending, why didn’t he face him up and shot bankers, oh no, he wants to take on Gasol… embarrassing… Jefferson disappeared again, McWho did nothing… Hill did nothing second half, Blair (He needs to be yelled out and told to slow the hell down) He resembles more a bowling ball than a basketball player. Mason… should have been damn traded. His agent should be happy he even has a job… worthless… so sorry for Manu, if Manu is smart he will leave the Spurs and go somewhere else… and I can’t say I blame him.
Timmy.. so sorry to say but it was very disappointing to watch him… we are down Parker and we can’t even count on him, I think he needs to take a pay cut or hang them up, that’s 20 mil right there!!! Yeah he’s good enough against lower teams, but not against playoff caliber teams, we need some bigs big time, Dyce and Bonner just don’t cut it.
Friday is a guaranteed loss!!!!

@JT
Are you a laker fan posing as a spurs fan. No true spurs fan would bash a player who has brought the team the only 4 titles in team history. Tim has earned the right to play as long as he wishes with the team. How can you go blaming Tim when the front office has not done its job in getting another big next to Duncan? How many championship caliber teams have 1 center and 4 guards playing. If Duncan had a semi decent big man next to him, he would not be able to be doubled constantly. I think JT needs to hang up his posting on spurs threads.

I just think that we need to take less three pointets and rely more on driving and getting fouled in the lane cause our three point shooting is inconsistent. Duncan is still in all star form, but he is simply being too predictable. For example, in tonights game he got the ball at three seconds left. Of course the defender knows he has to shoot the ball, and timmy just goes up and gets blocked. Really? He couldn’t have jumped and fade right in order to avoid the defender and then shoot. His fundamental stuff is just wayy too predictable right now. I also think it’s time for him too take off his knee brace. Man, I’m really missing parker right now. I now realize his value after he is injured. Hill is still not experienced enough to take the reins yet. Fml

This season is one punchline after another. To start off, this team has been one of the healthiest in the NBA! Quick, name the 2nd highest paid Spur? Our genius McDyess, who told Sports Illustrated about being a Spur, “Dunking and jumping was definitely fun, but now the winning mentality is more fun.” has dropped in every statistical category except one: turnovers. Roger Mason whined he “would be amenable to a trade if it offered him a chance for more playing time” and has not been amenable to making an open jumpshot since. You think Academy has balls? Michael Finley gets all this undeserved playing time, then asks to go to a contender. Quick, stand up if the Front Office wants you around next season!…Not so fast Manu. On some nights the Red Rocket is our arguably our third best player, when the same performance would be the Real Rockets fifth best player every night.
But now for the best part, just when the Spurs thought they were clicking, here comes the alarm clock.
As Jeff Gundy said tonight, “Kobe dominated the Spurs tonight on one end of the court, and Artest dominated them on the other.” Why cry about Duncan going 1 for 10 on national TV when the very next appearance he can just go 2 for 11?

@spursfanbayarea
No, I’m not a Laker fan… thanks for the insult. Just because I see the decline in a player from our team doesn’t make me not a fan. I’ll say it again, Timmy played well at the beginning of the season but he no longer is the presence he used to be. Yeah he needs help, no one argues that, but he is the main guy, you know making 20 mil a year. I expect something from the guy in the most important games, especially when Parker is out and we have idiots on our team such as Mason and Bogans.
I do appreciate what he has done for the team, but does that mean we should play him until he’s 90. Come on, I’m a Spurs fan - not just a Tim Duncan fan, what’s the point is he scores on a game when we win by 20 an everyone is scoring. We need someone ala Manu who can take over the game when its needed, and that isn’t the case.
If you can’t see that he can’t defend as well and that he moves slower than Miller (k just kidding here) you’re simply blinded by his former glory. (which again I give him all the credit in the world)
Everyone knows to beat the Spurs just take it to the rim and we can’t do anything.
All I’m saying is that he needs to step it up on important games against good teams.
Yeah so we don’t have 4 centers, what does that have to do his performance last night. His offense was non-existing (2 for 11)
Why is it that we can say that Jefferson sucks when he can’t shoot but when Timmy does it its a big problem. Accept the truth and face reality!!!

Bonner was the 3rd best player on the floor last night. What does that say about the team? And why does Pop keep calling up all these guards when size would help (especially last night) and Duane Jones continues to rot on the Toros?
March 25th, 2010 at 7:52 am
i saw fear in our team last night. in the first half, the game was being played at a crawl. a heavyweight match with haymakers being dealt instead of flurries. it was a great pace.
but in the second half, we looked hurried, passed up open shots, stopped moving the ball, and took poor shots as well. credit l.a.’s defense. they did an excellent job chasing bonner of the 3pt line, artest and kobe did an excellent job harassing manu, and, at this stage GASOL OWNS DUNCAN!!! timmy needs tony badly to set him up for easy looks and jumpers. duncan is not effective in the low post against gasol. his length is a bother. even though this is true, timmy still took some poor shots. i almost wish bynum was covering him instead.
so why is it that there are so many LA fans here in SA? i understand that this a problem that occurs in every NBA arena whenever the lakeshow comes to town, but it is especially worse in SA. i wonder if it is the latino population that indentifies with los angeles, or is it the years that fareweather fans saw us get crushed by the lakers annually from 2000-2002. it really break my heart to see kobe high-fiving our courtside spectators: all wearing yellow.
i sound like a broken record, but even though we didn’t get beaten by LA’s frontcourt, Ian may have helped in this game. he has been providing some low post offense and he is athletic enough to get defenders in foul trouble. it would have been nice to see gasol or bynum (if he played) pick up a few quick ones and get sent to the bench. blair really has no place on the court against LA. his activity and muscle cannot counterbalance their height. mahinmi would have challenged shots better, although he may have fouled out in 3 minutes….
i really think we match up well. george hill and tony parker cannot be covered by their back court which will only free everyone else up. we still will end up lacking frontcourt muscle.
every time LA and SA play, i die a little

@rj: I also think we could have used Mahinmi, especially when Mbenga was in. Mahinmi is an efficient scorer, and he could have helped us drive LA into a deeper hole at that point while giving the other bigs some rest.

First off, no one deserves anything. Do I want Duncan to finish his career in Spurs uniform? yes. However to say he deserves to for all hes done for the city, i say, have you seen his contract? He got paid very well to do his job which he did and thats great.
As for all the complaining, the spurs are just not a fluid team. When duncan is off they do not have a big who can put up points. There are only 3 good jump shooters on the team, and one was kept out of so many games hes off (mason). They will loose in first round of playoffs no matter who they face.
Here is my simple soluiton, next year alot of roster spots will open up. The spurs need to try and bring home splitter. Then in the draft/FA they need to focus on adding a SF and a SG/PG who can flat out score. And resign ginobli, or else make that 2 SG/PG who can score.
Next years line up: Parker, Hill, SF added, Duncan, McDysse. With Ginobli (or player added), Splitter, blair, Jefferson, and the other added player off the bench.

Even I was confused by the signing/reassigning business. Thanks for clearing it up. Makes sense.

trade parker, Hill is obviously stepping in quite well. Im currently at Baylor and watched CJ play for two years and watched him get better. He is very well rounded, but does tend to commit more TO’s than desired but he is a play maker and very coachable that would be a nice back up to Hill and would thrive under the guidance of Popp. He is responsible, along with Scott Drew, for turning our Bball program around and now, this weekend, we are heading to the sweet 16. Parker just doesnt fit our current system very well right now. We need a player that gets other players involved. Not a player that drives to the basket every play because he cant shoot the outside shot. Im sick of parker and I think he could be a huge trade asset that could bring us a big man or whatever to make this team click. Ginobili is playing at the highest level all season and I think resigning him is a must. There is a ton of directions this team can go from now until next season…im anxious and a little scared to see what happens post playoffs.

@JT
Is your problem with Duncan or his contract? Duncan took millions less to help out the team so that they could sign other players to keep them as contenders. When he was in his prime dont you agree he was underpaid at that time? How many other players are putting up consistent numbers like duncan has for the last 13 years. Has duncan slipped. He has slipped but is still playing at All star level. In the minutes he is playing he has been more efficient than ever. Against the good teams though, one man can not do it alone. If the spurs had another solid big man next to duncan it would be harder for the elite teams to take him out of the game.
March 25th, 2010 at 6:31 pm
No other spur has played as consistently as duncan this year. Duncan is the only one on the team averaging a double double. If not for duncan this team would be in the lottery for sure.
March 25th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
Shoot, a day later, it doesn’t really matter that the Spurs lost to the Lakers, but if there’s any team its nice to beat….it doesn’t bother me at all to see so many Laker fans-its probably cheaper for them to fly out and see the game here. If one city has 10 million people championship proud since 1972, and another city has 1 million championship proud since 1999, which team is going to have more fans?
