AUSTIN CONVENTION CENTER - As the Austin Toros march closer to the D-League Playoffs, it seems like personnel decisions are overshadowing every game recently.

First, it was the return of Marcus Williams to Austin. Then, it was the San Antonio Spurs signing Curtis Jerrells for the rest of the season and reassigning him to Austin. And now, it appears that the Spurs have signed former Toro Alonzo Gee to a contract for the rest of the season, where the Spurs will most likely reassign him to Austin.

Gee had been on his second 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards, but the Wizards look like they’ve decided against extending him for the remainder of the season.

Having Gee back on the roster would be a huge boost for the Toros, who entered Sunday evening’s game with the Bakersfield Jam 3.5 games behind the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (affiliate of the Houston Rockets) for first place in the West Conference. With the recent addition of Marcus Williams, who can play both guard positions and small forward, Gee’s reacquisition would create a murderer’s row of perimeter weapons for Austin in the playoffs.

A 39% shooter from 3-point range this season in the D-League, if Gee returns to the Toros he will get his fair share of open looks, as the combo of Curtis Jerrells and Marcus Williams has created a barrage of uncontested 3’s recently.

Against the Jam on Sunday, the Toros shot 9 of 22 (41%) from the 3-point line en route to a 122-110 win. Dwayne Jones led the way for Austin with as quiet a 27 points and 12 rebounds as one can have. And the versatile Williams added 26 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

  • I was suprised that the Spurs did not sign M. Williams for the remainder of the season since he knows the system opposed to the signing of Garrett Temple.

  • I really want Hairston and Williams to get a legitimate shot at the rotation next year. They seem analogous (not exacts, but similar) to Stephen Jackson and Brent Barry to me respectively.

I don’t know much about Gee, Jones, or Jerrells.

  • Good to see Gee back. I’m sure the Spurs weren’t happy when they saw Washington take him.

@BlaseE - I think Hairston at least will. He’s been in the system long enough and shown D in NBA games. Spurs will also be short at the swings with RMJ (not likely coming back) and Finley gone.

They’ll also need to bring in some more point guard presence (maybe Jackson or Temple).

Temple brings a lot of the same attributes as Marcus Williams though. Ball handler who is tall (known for his D) and has good wing span.
