San Antonio Spurs 133, Minnesota Timberwolves 111: Tony Parker and George Hill return in win over Minnesota
AT&T CENTER-George Hill made his triumphant return to the starting lineup. Tony Parker, starting on the bench, followed shortly after in reaffirming that the Spurs backcourt rotation is more than Manu Ginobili and company.
Playing together for the first time since March 6, Parker and Hill managed to sidestep any questions as to who should play instead of who by showcasing how brilliant their games mesh together.
“I love playing with George, I think we make a great duo,” Parker said. “George can get out and run and I’ll get him the ball on fast breaks and for the corner three. I think we create a lot of problems for other teams.”
In a key second quarter stretch the Spurs used to put away the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Parker-to-Hill connection found it’s way to a fast break layup, a George Hill corner three and a pair of free throws for Hill, who was fouled while shooting a corner jumper by a defender recovering from a Tony Parker drive.
Hill finished the night with six points and three assists, but displayed flashes of his full range of athleticism, blocking Kevin Love and forcing a jump ball.
“I was surprised that (Hill) was ready to go, they were telling me on the road how good he was doing in workouts,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said. “He came back quite quickly, I can’t believe he’s 100 percent but he’s been cleared, he said he feels really good so that’s great.
For most of the night, Tony Parker appeared to have his jets back, blowing by rookie point guard Johnny Flynn with ease, spinning in the lane and weaving his way through transition defense. It’s been a small sample size, but Parker is confidence his plantar fasciitis and injuries are a thing of the past.
And while not the 55-point performance he put up on Minnesota last season, Parker generally wreaked havoc on the Timberwolves’ defense to the tune of 12 points and seven assists on 5-of-8 shooting.
“I thought Tony did a wonderful job of coming off the bench for us,” Popovich said. “He penetrated, he found people, he was wonderful.”
Any excitement over the performance must be tempered with the acknowledgement that the Spurs were playing the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are possibly the worst team in the NBA right now. The Spurs failed to score 30 points in only one quarter (scoring 29 in the third) and had eight players scoring in double figures, led by Keith Bogans season-high 17 points.
The Spurs shot 58 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from the three-point line. Matt Bonner, starting in place of an inactive Antonio McDyess, scored 13 points and Tim Duncan had 16 points and six rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting.
A rested Spurs team (no starter played more than Richard Jefferson’s 23 minutes) will travel to Dallas on Wednesday to face a Dallas Mavericks team that may or may not be playing for the second seed in what could be a first round preview.
With the win, the Spurs clinched yet another 50-win season, their 11th straight. Now playing their best ball of the season, George Hill believes the team is ready to put their past struggles behind them in time for the playoffs.
“For as much as people said we had such a bad season, the race is still close as the difference is just a couple of games,” Hill said. “I think we’re ready to battle anyone in the West.”

everyone looked focused tonight… except for the first 6 minutes, which was quickly corrected… =)
Minni got lobster faced.

let me be the 1st spurs fan to thank the blazers for beating OKC tonight! We just avoided the lakers! YOOOHOOOOO! time to kick some mav ass in the playoffs! Always wanted to send them home after 2006 and now 2009!

Love Hills confidence, love his game and how it meshes so well within the Spurs system as well as being a great compliment to our already established big three in Tim, Manu, and Tony. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hill be one of the best of our new generation Spurs.
April 12th, 2010 at 9:22 pm
Right now it seems to me our best bet would be to play Denver, Id much rather play Denver than Dallas in the first round, who has the tiebreak between Dallas and Denver?
April 12th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
Spurs are playing Dallas. Portland is not going to lose to GSW at home. Dallas likely will hold 2nd seed.
Denver plays Phoenix tomorrow at Denver.
Utah plays at Golden State tomorrow. They’ll likely win that one and then host Phoenix. That’ll be interesting.
April 12th, 2010 at 9:38 pm
The question now is who do we prefer playing? If we lose to Dallas, and if Utah beats the Suns, we will play Utah. If we win, we will play Mavs. As much as I want to beat the Mavs, I am in no mood to lose to the Mavs in the playoffs.
April 12th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
Would Utah be better than facing Dallas but? we got swept by Utah…
April 12th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
I don’t think Pop cares who we play so I wouldn’t be surprised if he rests our key players on Wednesday IMO.
April 12th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
Actually, Utah will be much better in my opinion. They swept us before the Spurs were playing like the Spurs. We last played them in January when our game was horrible. They are a very beatable team. Even match-up wise, Boozer and Duncan, Tony and Deron, and dare I say okur and bonner (lol). Manu is our trump card.
April 12th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
Didn’t we get swept by Utah when we beat them in the WCF in 07? I’d LOVE to play Denver, as I think that’s our best bet by far out of all the likely candidates. After that I’d rather play the Lakers, then Utah, then Dallas. Honestly, the only thing that scares me about L.A. (sans an integrated Bynum) is the officiating. We would get NO calls in that series. Dallas always creates matchup issues for us, and Utah is not only physical, but they’re allowed to play a much more aggressive and physical brand of ball than we are.
April 12th, 2010 at 10:01 pm
Let’s grow a pair and get revenge on the Mavs. I hate them.

if there’s anything to take away from the last couple of weeks, it’s that the title may well go through cleveland or orlando, but here it’s a wild wild west. i don’t know how anyone can seriously put us completely out of contention to make it out of the west now, especially with word that bynum is out for a bit longer. are we favorites? not exactly, but we certainly can’t be dismissed as easily as many here claimed a few weeks ago.
that makes me happy and excited for the playoffs. maybe more excited than i’ve been since ‘07.
April 12th, 2010 at 11:15 pm
I still say a series against the Mavs is going to be harder than a series against the Lakers would have been.
I don’t know why everyone is so excited that they might play the MAVS.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the SPURS can take it. But it might go 7 games.
I would much rather have them play Suns,Jazz or Nuggets.
I’m glad Lakers get OKC. THey most certaily would have coasted against a Royless Blazer team.
I hope OKC takes them the distance.
April 12th, 2010 at 11:24 pm
Amen to that junierizzle. Of course Nuggets would be the easiest opponent. But we r just comparing lakers and mavs at the moment and I think Mavs are more beatable than the lakers.
People say that u have to face the lakers eventually, but thats not necessarily true. I would rather hope for an upset (say OKC or Utah) and face them upfront.
April 13th, 2010 at 12:36 am
i think the spurs can match up with the mavs. i believe on our chances! 5th ring baby

Actually, if Utah wins out, and the Blazers win their last game, and we BEAT Dallas, Utah gets the second seed by virtue of the tie-break advantage over Dallas. Thus, under such a scenario, we would play Utah in the first round. If we lose to Dallas, we’d play Dallas in the first round because the Mavs would finish a game up on the Jazz, and in the two seed. If the Blazers are upset in their last game and we beat Dallas, we’d end up as the 6th seed. In such a scenario, if the Jazz were to win out, we’d get the Mavs, if they lose one of two, we’d get the Jazz. The Suns & Nuggets are still alive for the 3rd seed, but it’s getting a bit complicated at this point, so I’ll stop. Bottom line: we are much more likely to match-up with either Dallas or Utah in the first round than anyone else. Both of those teams would be a stiff test for us, but we have a shot if we play really well as a “team”.
April 13th, 2010 at 2:33 am
Congrats to the whole franchise on another 50 win season.. Welcome back to G-Hill.. Thank you to Pop for sitting Dyce for some needed rest and reducing minutes for the main guys and playing everyone.
To think that this team would’ve won by nearly 40 if they made their FTs while playing so many young players is good news for the present and future, regardless of opponent. This team certainly did not have this level of scoring depth and athleticism last year.
Our playoffs start Wednesday. Beat Dallas and let the final seeding (7 or 6) and opponent (Mavs, Jazz or Nuggets) fall as it will. This team is ready to march toward title number 5.
April 13th, 2010 at 3:23 am
I agree with Spurredon. I don’t think La/Dallas/Denver/Utah are any better/worse than each other. They are all good teams, so we might as well bring it in Dallas, kick their butts, and take some momentum into the playoffs!
April 13th, 2010 at 4:28 am
@Randall
I don’t think we were swept by Utah in 2007. I think they hadn’t won in the At&T center until very recently. I would still face them in the playoffs because they are undersized in the post (Memo plays like a 3, Boozer vs matchup) and the fact that they haven’t played the Spurs recently.
April 13th, 2010 at 4:41 am
I started watching this near the start where the game was a bit even at the start and I think once Tony Parker got out he was like our spark plug, something we needed. Then we started to pull away, by a significant margin. Somehow during the game however I was getting excited then I woke up and realised we were playing the Timberwolves. But these are pretty much going to be the end of the not so important season. For the Spurs business time is just around the corner.
I don’t think Manu no longer needs to be our spark because we need his spark from the very start of the game.
Just thinking about that upcoming Dallas game. I think out of the top 3 teams my fear of them as a Spurs fan is in this order…
3. Denver
2. LA
1. Dallas
Dallas being the one I fear the most because of that 2-7 seed match up. I think Dallas has been on a tear lately since that All Star break and I think how we match up with them is quite iffy.
Haywood vs Blair/McDyess
Dirk vs Duncan
Marion vs Jefferson
Terry/Butler vs Ginobili/Hill
Jason Kidd vs Tony Parker
If anything I agree when I hear that this could be another first round match up.
Another thing I was getting excited about was getting the 6th seed and hoping Thunder and Portland got 7th and 8th respectively.
I thought both those two teams had the potential to give some 1-8/2-7 upsets.
That won’t be the case however with the Brandon Roy injury!

April 13th, 2010 at 4:49 am
In the first quarter when the spurs wern’t yet blowing them out, Pop called a short time out and all he did was hold up his hands in frustration for like 7 seconds, then they went back out there and started to dominate. It was a pretty funny looking timeout.
April 13th, 2010 at 5:06 am
I didnt get a chance to watch the game; can anyone tell me what Mahinmi looked like? I saw he had 6 fouls, but was that because he was playing good defense or were they stupid fouls. What did his offense look like?
Thanks!
April 13th, 2010 at 5:59 am
I agree with those who think the 7 seed is a bad one for us. We’ll probably draw Dallas, who are a tough match-up for us and by some measures have been the best team in the West since the trade deadline. I would have much rather faced the Lakers-Kobe’s been hurt and playing badly pretty much since the all star break and Bynum’s a question mark. With the Lakers’ health problems, I honestly think we’d have to be favored against them. On the other hand, with Roy out, I can’t see the Blazers prevailing. Then, if we do manage to past Dallas, we may be playing a healthy Lakers.
April 13th, 2010 at 6:00 am
Couldn’t look at the game either, and was wondering how Mahinmi as well…
Cannot beleive a sucky season like this and we still end with 50 wins
April 13th, 2010 at 6:43 am
Curious for Jesse and Tim’s insights on TP’s potential return to zip. Last night on NBA TV while re-capping the game with the Timberwolves they made reference to Tony looking like his old self as he zipped by the Wolves’ Flynn.
Then there’s this report at Yahoo.com http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/sas/report
Near the bottom they note, “The bonus for Parker is his month on the disabled list has eased the pain of the plantar fasciitis in his left foot and a hip flexor injury.
“I don’t feel anything in my plantar and my hip now,” Parker said.” Tim’s recent comments regarding Tony left me to believe he trained quite hard during his time on the injured list. There also appeared to be some indication Tony’s plantar faciitis was as poor as before the hand injury.
Is there any truth to this improvement for Tony? I didn’t get to watch the game last night so I am curious if anyone noticed an improvement in TP’s explosiveness and drive to the hole? Although I believe Manu is the main reason to believe, followed by RJ’s potential…Tony returning to form, if potentially true, would have incredible timing.
April 13th, 2010 at 6:43 am
@ Jim Henderson
Portland will finish 6th, they have a guaranteed win against a GS team that winnig once more would lose about 5% chances of getting the first pick.
I think Pop would give the starters a rest against Dallas.
April 13th, 2010 at 6:48 am
Mahinimi looked very athletic out there. grabbed some nice boards, and his offense looked good. I believe if he got regular minutes, he would be a solid 15 and 10 guy. His defense is another question…. Nice pick and roll defense, but his man on man defense if where he gets into trouble
April 13th, 2010 at 6:52 am
Thought Ian looked very, very good, particularly on the offensive end of the court. About half of his fouls were due to inexperience, alot like DeJuan’s. Some of it seems to be due to enthusiasm. He seems so psyched just to be on the court that his adrenalin gets out ahead of his brain. His presence also altered a lot of shots by the Wolves, including by Al Jefferson, no slouch by any means. His athleticism was also impressive on a few monster rebounds. The guy is raw but certainly shows potential. He needs a steadying influence while on the court. Sure, he fouls alot but so does Blair. It’s still a head scratcher why Pop has not tried him more during the season. Will he ever replicate TD? Of course not. But he could be a significant contributor, given the chance. Hopefully, it’ll be for the Spurs next season and not someone else. He will play in the NBA.
April 13th, 2010 at 6:54 am
Now we have to play LA in the WCF, given that both teams win each round. If anybody runs across Kobe, slap his hand a lot to bug that finger. I think it’s going to get to him in the playoffs.
April 13th, 2010 at 7:01 am
It looks like Spurs will be #7, based on the assumption that Portland will beat Golden State (who will be playing tonight against Utah too). If Phoenix beats Denver tonight, then it’s Dallas in Round 1. I say rest our boys and get ready for playoffs.
April 13th, 2010 at 7:26 am
@ Royce: Your matchups are actually a little iffy.
I live in Dallas (unfortunately for my love for the Spurs) and Haywood’s playing time is reducing in favor of Damp - no one understands why, and the feeling is he’s getting frustrated considering he is clearly the better player.
Also, Butler and Marion have been battling some injuries the last while, too, with Butler sitting out last night’s game for the Mavs and Marion only got back last night after missing 3 games with a strained oblique.
Come playoff-time, I think we can get right back into the Mavs’ heads like we used to. They’ve gotten on a roll again after a swoon, but mostly against inferior teams.
‘Sides, if it’s a Mavs-Spurs series, I can get to a couple games here in Dallas! MWAHAHA!
April 13th, 2010 at 7:29 am
According to popcornmachine.net, it looks like Tony and George only played together for about 3 mins last night-maybe Tony should pump the brakes on that “great duo” talk?
I’m worred how they’ll fare defensively against a team with good guards, especially if Hill is somewhere less than 100%. I like having a different look to throw out there though, and they should be tough to contain on offense.
April 13th, 2010 at 7:31 am
great game. i heard that our boys in silver and black we tossing t-shrits out to the crowd. what a bunch of great, appreciative sportsmen.
i think pop is low-balling us a little. i would almost bet that he is more confident in us playing l.a. than he would let on. the last thing you want to do is give kobe more motivation.
mahinmi showed some nice production. most people argue that his point come against inferior competition, but it appears he was matched up with al jeff and k love most of the night. those guys are by no means inferior. 14pts, 7 boards, 1 blk, 1 steal is a good stat line, but the fouls must be under control if we seem him becoming a contributor. i think he has proven himself to get another contract to fill out or bench, at least. once he faces better competition on a nightly basis, his man-to-man defense will improve. and does anyone notice that he gets to the line with relative ease? that almost offsets his own fouls. 6-12 in free throws! that has to raise some eyebrows.
i think he is worth bringing back. once his man to man improves, he will be a solid backup center.
April 13th, 2010 at 8:08 am
I can’t believe people on here are talking like they’re scared of the Mavs.
I’m not. Since the last time we faced the Mavs with a healthy team (‘06) they have traded away 3 of the biggest thorns in the Spurs’ side.. Howard, Harris, Stackhouse.
Is Nowitzki still a bad match-up? yes.
But so is Amar’e, Melo, and Kobe.
This talk of Mavs being one of best teams is a little bit misleading. When the Mavs win, they usually win by 9 points or less. But when the Mavs lose, they usually lose by 10+ points. They have a poor point differential which is commonly used to measure team strength.
It’s always a dog fight when these two teams play and the series will likely go 6-7 games.
But honestly, is there anything better than beating down the Mavs and watching Cubana sulk into his chair?
April 13th, 2010 at 8:09 am
Just a curious little post. I think Mahimi struggles with his defense when its post up guys. I think he might be a great defensive fit against Dirk. I would love to see him go against Dirk a bit on wednesday if dallas plays him. I think his length and atheleticism may be exactly what the spurs need against dirk.
April 13th, 2010 at 8:11 am
AMEN Brotha VPoCS! That last line is my greatest hope for this first round series! Especially if our boys finish it on THEIR court! MWAHAHAHA!!!
I’m not afraid of them whatsoever. Living in Dallas, I see their personality regularly, and it’s not to be feared! Respected, but not feared!
GO SPURS GO!
April 13th, 2010 at 8:52 am
@ Renato,
Totally agree. Very intriguing.
April 13th, 2010 at 9:10 am
I’m with @SAJKinBigD, I also live in Dallas, with a die hard Mavs roommate. I’m forced to watch most all of their games and they aren’t playing near the level of ball that SA is right now. Dallas either peaked too soon in the season or something else is going on that’s derailed them, but their strong record was due in large part to basketball played well over a month ago, not how they are playing now. I say rest Timmy and maybe Manu on Wed, and get ready to prove why SA wins championships and Dallas doesn’t.
April 13th, 2010 at 9:14 am
Ian was really mad when he fouled out. He really wanted to play those extra 5 minutes.
It’s no coincidence his two best games were against the league’s two worst teams (Nets and Wolves). He’s progressed from a player who overwhelms D-leaguers with athleticism to one with enough offensive fundamentals to be an NBA reserve. Better teams (e.g. Memphis) expose his defensive weaknesses and he’s still foul prone. He’d probably develop faster on a bad team with a good defensive coach. I think the Spurs will re-sign him and he’ll get 12 minutes/game early next year and a chance to play his way into the rotation.
April 13th, 2010 at 9:17 am
BTW, George was clearly off last night. As point guard he was -11 in the first half (Tony was an incredible +33). That said, he moved OK and barring re-injury should be 100% in the playoffs.
April 13th, 2010 at 9:25 am
Although his length and athleticism would be great against Dirk, Dirk is one of the best players at drawing fouls. Yawn would foul out in less than 10 minutes. At this point he’s just not experienced enough to avoid the fouls. Throw RJ/Hill (who did decent last time)/Manu/Bogans (who’s best defense always comes against guys who are bigger than him) on Dirk and dont double. Let Dirk score 80 if we have to, but contain everyone else.
April 13th, 2010 at 9:26 am
I doubt we’ll see Mahimi get any meaningful minutes. Pop hasn’t given him any meaningful minutes all season. I think the fear with Mahimi is that he’s athletic for sure and can do some good things on the ocurt, but being such a foul machine puts the other team in the penalty at a very early stage in the game. Just a guess on my part, but I think that’s why they have him riding the pine. If he could get his fouls under control I think he’d see more PT. It just doesn’t make sense that we have an athletic legitimate 7 footer and let him rot onthe bench instead of giving him some burn/developing his talent unless there is an underlying reason.
My guess is fouls, then again… we shipped Theo off for nothing and he’s been very servicable as a shot blocker for Larry Brown’s playoff bound Bobcats. Tyring to guess what’s in Pop’s head is a dangerous game that usually ends in failure…
April 13th, 2010 at 9:28 am
@DieHardSpur - Ian truly has a quick first step and his length allows him to get close to the hoop on his initial move. I’m sure if he played more he’d be scouted and have to offset that but when he’s in he will shoot close to the basket and often get fouled. I thought some of his fouls were a product of the many whistles from last night. It’s like the refs were determined to make every by-the-rule touch get called on both teams, thus a number of FTs. His final foul was out of frustration at his 5th foul so that’s more an issue of maturity. I’m glad he got to play.
Watching all the young bench guys with quick first steps, long arms and the ability to get to the rim and get fouled plus play the passing lanes is very nice to see in black & silver.
I’m not getting the Mavs fear. By most measures (play of late, match ups, etc) they should be fearing the Spurs. There’s a four game difference in their records. Half of that is the OT loss @Dallas when Manu and Tony didn’t play. Let’s just get/stay healthy and we’ll be fine.
April 13th, 2010 at 10:07 am
I’d rather face the Mavs than the Jazz. All of the western conference playoffs teams are good, but the Jazz and the Spurs have played better ball down the strech than the others. Hollinger and Sagarin rank the Spurs and Jazz as about equal, with the Mavs far behind. This is a great opportunity to take some revenge.
April 13th, 2010 at 10:20 am
@SpursfanSteve, RJ did excellent against Dirk in the last game. Dirk only went off once Coach B pulled RJ out after that nice block he had. No idea why Coach B did that.

“It looks like Spurs will be #7, based on the assumption that Portland will beat Golden State (who will be playing tonight against Utah too). If Phoenix beats Denver tonight, then it’s Dallas in Round 1. I say rest our boys and get ready for playoffs.”
No, see my previous post on this thread ( Jim Henderson April 13th, 2010 at 12:48 am ). If Utah wins their last two and we beat Dallas, we play the JAZZ in round one. For us, our game with Mavs is only important to stay healthy and play solid, Spur basketball, heading into the playoffs, because we won’t know if we will play the Mavs or Jazz until after the Jazz-Suns game, which plays after our game. If Dallas loses, they have a shot at opening against the Roy-less Blazers, so I don’t think the Mavs will try real hard to win our game. Thus, if we beat the Mavs, and the Jazz beat Suns, we’d open against the Jazz. If the Suns beat the Nuggets & Jazz, we will open against the Mavs.
And that’s not ALL the scenarios, but just the most likely ones. If I had my pick, out of what is possible, I’d prefer to open against the Jazz (although, I’m not sure how healthy the Mavs are right now), but it’s not a BIG deal if it were the Mavs. Both would be stiff tests, but we have a shot if we play very well as a “team”, and hit clutch shots.

You’re right on the Ian/Dirk issue. Ian would foul out in five minutes.
Dr. Who
April 13th, 2010 at 9:26 am
Yes, defense in general, and fouls in particular, remain the biggest problem for Mahinmi. That’s why, if you’ve noticed, when he’s in there we make sure he gets a ton of touches on the offensive end, because to be honest, he can be pretty tough to stop against inferior post defenders, and this helps to offset his defensive liabilities.
A general comment: It’s not about being afraid, or being less confident against any of the teams. It’s about who do we match up better with, and who are we MORE LIKELY to have success against in a 7-game series, all else being equal.
It’s not about confidence or fear. We will be confident against whoever we play. Our stars and our coach are just too savvy and experienced not to.
April 13th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
Wow… Spurs and Mavs in the first round? I guess it really doesn’t matter who we face. If you want to win it all (which the Spurs feel they can, every year) then you have to beat the best. Weather its in the first round or the last. I feel like the Spurs can win it all and I’ll tell you why. Team Defense. They are starting to show teams that they can play defense. I know they are not the best at it right not but they are at least 5th or 6th in the league. Thats not bad at all. Also, Spurs are playing great ball when it matters…. at the end of the season and not at the beginning like some other teams. I think this team has started to believe in themselves. They might not be as talented as some of the other teams…. but at this point I dont think they care. It’s like being the little kid that got picked on all year long and finally got fed up with it and just swung his fist as hard as he could (with his eyes closed of course) and got the lucky hit right on the chin! We may not be better but I bet the Spurs are tired of being beat like a red headed stepchild and their going to come out swinging… and maybe… just maybe… get that lucky punch……right on the chin!
