The pressure mounts the longer it goes
Here’s a riddle for you: lots of folks are saying that the San Antonio Spurs need to win Game 6 tonight in San Antonio and end the series, because if it goes to Game 7 in Dallas, all the pressure will be on the Spurs. But by saying that, aren’t they putting all that pressure on the Spurs to win tonight instead?
I’ll let you ponder that for a minute.
Either way you look at it, I’m sure all parties involved would like for this series to end tonight. Except for the Mavs, that is. I guess by all parties, I’m saying us, you and the Spurs.
One key to Game 6 for the Spurs is slowing down the Mavericks in transition. Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News had a good writeup on the pace of play today:
Amid the obvious physical battles of the series, which have resulted in four flagrant fouls and one broken nose (Ginobili’s), there has been a subtler philosophical battle raging as well. It is a tug-of-war over tempo.
If the game becomes three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust, a la Games 2, 3, and 4, the Spurs win. If it becomes a track meet, as in Games 1 and 5, the Mavs do.
“They’re very dangerous with their pace,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who even after the Game 5 loss is 24-9 in potential close-out games, the best mark in NBA history. “We’ve got to make sure we get back as best we can no matter whether we’re scoring or not.”
The Mavericks are 2-0 in the series when they notch at least 100 points, 0-3 when they do not. In the three losses, they have averaged 88.
The Spurs are great at controlling pace. That’s the main reason for San Antonio’s consistent success against the Phoenix Suns in previous years. So it’s probable that the Spurs can control the tempo and make it a defensive game, where Dallas has struggled in halfcourt offense this series.
Another area I suggest keeping an eye on is the play of Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. Both had bad performances in Games 4 and 5. Together, Manu and Duncan are a combined 10-41 in both of those games. No bueno.
At least one of them, if not both, will have to be sharp offensively for the Spurs to win tonight. Unless the dogs have the same impact they did in Game 4, but that’s something you simply can’t rely on.
The third thing to watch in tonight’s Game 6 is how the Spurs adjust to Brendan Haywood. After coming off the bench for the entire series, Haywood started Game 5 and produced to the tune of eight points, eight rebounds (six offensive) and four blocked shots, and the Mavs big man shot 12 free throws.
How the Spurs counter the impact of having Haywood on the floor from the start will have a significant impact on how this game goes. It seems the more Erick Dampier plays, the better San Antonio does. Attacking the basket, which the Spurs didn’t do a good job of in Game 5 outside of Tony Parker, can get Haywood in foul trouble early and get him out of the game. Easier said than done, I know, but nonetheless must be said.
The longer this series goes after the Spurs were up 3-1, the more the pressure increases for San Antonio. Whispers of choke will start if the silver and black lose tonight. And what the Spurs can use more than anything, is rest. Not only will a Game 7 mean another game, it means another flight to Dallas and another night in a hotel. The Spurs need to do themselves a favor; finish it tonight.

Go Spurs go! Please don’t make me watch a Game 7. I can’t handle the stress.
April 29th, 2010 at 10:47 am
The pressure is about equal for game 6. Yes, the Spurs don’t want to return to Dallas with consecutive losses, but only one team can have it’s season end tonight. Every quarter that ends with the Spurs in the lead is a reminder to Dallas of their impending vacation. Theirs is the franchise synonymous with choking, not San Antonio’s. Theirs is the team that was complaining about minutes played and officiating four days ago. Deep down they expect to be defeated but we still have to initiate and make it happen.
It’s important to take the lead early and make them spend as much of the game as possible fighting uphill, especially with everyone knowing the stat that the winner of the 1st Q has won each game.
Pace has been dictated by turnovers. Turnovers have been related to fouls. If the Spurs don’t commit unforced turnovers the Mavs can’t run, can’t create mismatches that lead to fouls and offensive rebounds, don’t get Butler involved and place the game all on Dirk’s shoulders. A physical game where we control tempo and have the lead means an exhaustive amount of minutes for Kidd and Dirk.
Our players control their fate and I’m comfortable leaving it in their capable hands. Go Spurs Go!

If, God forbid, the Spurs lose this series one of the biggest reasons why would be Manu’s nose. He just hasn’t seemed the same since he connected to Dirk’s elbow.
I understand that it was an “accident” but it isn’t the first time that Dirk has hit somebody in the face with his elbow.
What’s to stop a player from driving into other players trying to initiate enough contact to injure them? I know it’s part of basketball, but I still get frustrated thinking about it.
April 29th, 2010 at 11:07 am
I have a sneaking suspicion Pop will start Tony tonight.
April 29th, 2010 at 11:20 am
Tony is starting and Manu is exploding

I think we sometimes make the game of basketball too complicated. If we get back to the basics and don’t beat ourselves, we’ll win because we’re the better team.
If Tim awakens from his two game slumber to play well, we definitely win. When TD has it going, he’s going to open it up more for everyone.
April 29th, 2010 at 11:24 am
@ Jordan
You hit it right on the “nose”. That brace and bandage has to be right in Manu’s peripheral vision, which would no doubt affect his shootting…even dribbling and passing.
As for Dirk…you certainly can’t penalize his 3-foot long elbows but I resent all those years of Bowen being called dirty and Manu a flopper. Dirk flails his body around more than a fish out of water. To me that’s as dirty as it comes. , trying to draw any contact he can. Call it crafty but I call it ugly and dirty. Man up Dirk! Keep your fins to yourself.
April 29th, 2010 at 11:43 am
Hey guys, elbows are a part of the game. Manu tosses his, Shaq demolishes with his, and Dirk clips noses with his. Basketball has the most injuries per player than any other sport. It’s the fastest sport with the most constant contact and the least amount of protective equipment. Whining is weak. If Manu doesn’t complain about a broken nose, then we can’t complain either.
Our boys are pissed, focused, and rested for Game 6. Tonight will be an old fashioned butt-whupping.
April 29th, 2010 at 11:48 am
i just have a feeling that manu will have a great game tonight. both in the postgame and shootaround interviews showed manu as determined to make himself up from the last couple of crap games he has produced. I think Dallas’ playoff run ends tonight and we face Utah or Denver (hoping Denver). I’m more scared of us facing Utah than Denver. I hope we can make Dirk mad again like in 2008 when he hit a bottle on the ground in frustration and i laughed! Its gonna be a great game and we will win hopefuly. I think either Manu or Tony will have to come off the bench. Pop may switch manu and Tony having tony starting, but i don’t know. Manu and Blair have just had that connection during the regular season that should mesh together tonight if they ride in the secondary together. go spurs go!
April 29th, 2010 at 11:55 am
Umm, we would face either Phoenix or Portland - not Utah or Denver (unless they beat the winner of Lakers/Thunder and we beat the winner of Phoenix/Portland).
April 29th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
Keys to the game:
1.) Control Turnovers. If the Spurs hand the ball to the Mavs, its over. If the Spurs take care of the ball, it forces the Mavs to buckle down and play defense and it also tends to slow the pace of the game. Both are advantages for the Spurs.
2.) Game pace. The Spurs need to slow this game to a crawl. Take care of the ball and force the Mavs into the teeth of the defense. Mavs score 100=Mavs win. Mavs score less than 100= Spurs win.
3.) Tim, Manu. These cats have to show up tonight. They’ve taken the last two games off so its time to see them explode on the Mavs. Another 1-9 night by Duncan or 4 turnover night by Manu may have us looking at game 7. With that said, I could see both of them blowing the Mavs up tonight. They’re due.
4.) Defense. I’m convinced game 5 was a freak game for the Spurs, but we need to tighten up our defensive rotations and not let Butler (even though he won’t) go for another big breakout game. Single team Dirk. Let him drop 40, but control the other clowns.
5.) No Bogans or Mason. Limited minutes for Bonner. Do I even need to explain this? Go all in on our big gun’s minutes. They can rest up between now and the next series. Tonight it must end.
April 29th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
102-95 Mavs
As Manu goes, so goes the Spurs.
April 29th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
It’s pretty simple.
Mavs can only win if SPURS turn the ball over. Or if TD and MANU have bad games again. Missed shots might as well be turnovers too.
If SPURS have at most 8 turnovers then SPURS win.
I have a feeling MANU is going to be big tonight. Maybe the nose has bothered him a little. Hopefully enough time has passed to where he is more comfortable with it.
I hope they get it done tonight. They can totally win a game 7, but there is no need to let it get that far.
April 29th, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Tonight Manu needs to be Manu. Timmy needs to be Timmy. Tony be Tony. Beast be Beast. Roger Mason hopefully on bench. Never seen a player become so bad so quickly. His shots are not even close. The better those guys play and the less Mason plays the better game 6 will be.
April 29th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Dirk Nowitzki breaks nose and knocks out teeth with his elbows (ask Carl Landry whose 2 out of 3 teeth completely knocked out were left lodged in Nowitzki’s elbow when he knocked them out). Nowitzki is purposely flailing his elbows to get foul calls and to intentionally hurt people. Nowitzki flailed his elbows at Bonner and got a foul and tried with Blair and got a technical. Swinging elbows is a part of game like Barkley posting up with his derriere.
I agree with keys laid out by Hobson 13 except game pace. Defense and turnovers dictate pace.
I still believe this is the Spurs Game 7, as in a win Spurs advance or a loss the series will be over with Game 7 in Dallas as a formality.
Go Spurs Go.
April 29th, 2010 at 1:04 pm
@thatbigguy
You’re absolutely right. I don’t mean to whine, even if I am still very annoyed at Nowitzki. I just want to see the Spurs win this series.
April 29th, 2010 at 1:19 pm
@ Jordan
No worries. Unless you’ve played the game, you don’t know about all the contact, and most will assume it’s dirty. I’ve had my nose broken by putting it near the business end of an elbow. I’ve also broken a cheek bone with my own elbow. It’s all just a part of the game.
April 29th, 2010 at 1:34 pm
Do we really need to reference Wayne Winston so much? Especially with respect to a statistical analysis of effective lineups in game 5? What can possibly be gleaned that is statistically significant from a game where Pop threw in the towel so early? Stats have their place, but in a blowout game lineup analysis is practically useless.
Furthermore, I remember plenty of times in the first 3 games where Duncan ABUSED Haywood. So does the fact that Haywood is now statistically the better option have more to do with Duncan’s lack of production?
Frankly, if the Spurs are playing the way they’re capable of I’d rather they face Haywood than Dampier. If Duncan has anything left in the tank tonight, Haywood will get abused.
Then Wayne will come out with another lineup analysis from another stupid small sample size that all the stat geeks will ooh and ah over…
April 29th, 2010 at 1:51 pm
@ThatBigGuy - I’m feeling what you’re saying. Let’s hand out that old fashioned butt-whipping. I’m ready.
April 29th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Sometimes Winston’s analysis is based an very small sample sizes and hence irrelevant.
April 29th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
Hobson13
April 29th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
Good keys. I would add a sixth key.
6.) RJ needs to be aggressive and get involved in the game EARLY! He doesn’t have to have a BIG game, but he does have to be involved EARLY. We can win without RJ playing well, but our chances go way down if Mavs are also playing well. And we simply can’t afford to take that risk. With RJ playing well, everything else being equal, we win most games, against the great majority of teams. It’s that simple.
April 29th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
I agree with the entire pressure theme.
Whatever happens over the course of this playoffs from here on out, I think the play from this series has cast an optimistic light over the future of the franchise.
All is not lost as many in the media and indeed right here on this forum bleated for most of the season.
There is a lot of pressure, but for San Antonio I believe that’s a positive. We have players who are renowned for thriving under the gun. Dallas is almost the poster child for falling at the line.
If you took a snap poll amongst coaches and staff around the league as to who they would pick to withstand pressure and execute in the teeth of the whirlwind, I would think the Spurs would be specials.
April 29th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
I’m feeling pretty confident that our veterans will play their asses off tonight. And I think our best shot will beat their best shot. Start Parker, burn Manu’s bandage and let Tim have the ball in the post.
April 29th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Keys to the game for me is:
Sit on my favorite couch, TV volume set at 20 (manu’s number) and spend the last 4 minutes of the game standing 4 feet from my TV. This always seems to work and the Spurs win. For all the others out there please just do what you did when the spurs came out on top.
Go Spurs! Manu, Tim, Tony , George, RJ, Dice and Blair…great game from each of you!!!
April 29th, 2010 at 3:18 pm
I’ll be doing my ritual as well:
1. Don’t put on my Duncan home jersey.
2. Pour a half-glass of whiskey and not finish it until the game is over.
3. Live and die with every shot.
April 29th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
Let’s see. If I asked every Mavs player or coach if they would rather be up 3-2 or down 3-2 and have one game set for home and one game set for the road what would they all say? (with the exception of JT because he is just plain stupid)
Play your best tonight and if you lose there is a game 7 where anything can and will happen..
Go Spurs Go
April 29th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
Pressure is on for the Spurs tonight. They don’t want to head back to Dallas more than anyone else. Come out hot, get a big lead, and hold on to it!
Let’s do this!
April 29th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
Uh-oh Duncan got hurt. Barea jumped on his right, arthritic knee pretending to go for a loose ball.
April 29th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
Uh-oh Duncan got hurt. Barea jumped on his left, arthritic knee pretending to go for a loose ball.
April 29th, 2010 at 4:57 pm
This game’s gone about as perfect as it can go (6 minutes left in the half. I just have one complaint:
The big three are just 3 for 9 from the free throw line! Can we get that handled? There’s a long ways to go in this game. Let’s not give away any free ones.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
Despite a CRAPPY end to the first half, things are going quite well right now. That said, let me just share this with you. This is an elimination game. There can be BIG swings in these types of games. Coming out in the third, we can not afford to give the Mavs ANY hope. Coming out in the third, we need to go for the juggler. Let’s start the 3rd on something like a 10-2 run. That should get the Mavs reeling, and questioning their confidence.
If you remember, this is what the Bulls of MJ/Pippen did to tear their opponents hearts out: they got a sizable lead in the first half, and then to start the third, they lowered the boom and just hammered their opponent. The Spurs need to take a page out of the Bulls book. GO SPURS!!
April 29th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
@Jim
If the Spurs can nail this game down in the third quarter, I’ll consider them one of the title contenders this year. Having that “killer instinct”.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
Pop gets credit for this one the way he coached the last game. Great work Pop. Glad to see your not talking to Jim Henderson anymore.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Nowitzki committed his 5th foul with 10:30 left in the 3rd qtr by holding on to McDyess arm and the foul was called on McDyess.
The Spurs are in trouble playing 5 on 8! 4 fouls on the Spurs in the 2 minutes of the 3rd qtr.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:40 pm
Refs have to even up the game…
April 29th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
RIDICULOUS 2nd half start!!! Way to make it a tension-packed game now! Mavs down only 5 on a 10-2 run of their own. What a joke!
Trade TP
Pop is listening to me. RMJ is not even in the building!
April 29th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
Butler fouls Nowitzki on the hip on an offensive rebound but the foul is on Bonner, what a load of crap!
April 29th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
He must be listening to you and Wayne Winston. Playing that dumb fuck Matt Bonner is killing us. Not to mention TPs defense on the Ethopian.
Matt Bonner is awful. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot. +/- Great STAT!!!!
Or is it too early in the half to say he sucks Jim?
April 29th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
Butler bear hugs Ginobili and its a jump ball! Since when do you get to put 2 arms around a person going to the hoop and get a jump ball?
April 29th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
if we could make even a mere 75% of free throws this game would be out of reach
April 29th, 2010 at 6:08 pm
Man…. It’s 3:07 am here in Ireland. How quick can I get to San Antone and scream at Cuban. Fathead. On a lighter note, this is proper playoff ball. _Ason kid with a J? Hill rules
April 29th, 2010 at 6:08 pm
Matt Bonner is not “killing us”! He’s 2 for 4 shooting, and has 7 freaking rebounds in just 11 minutes. He’s committed a couple of unnecessary fouls - big fucking deal - who hasn’t! Who cares about +/-? I don’t!!
April 29th, 2010 at 6:21 pm
Jim Henderson = doesnt understand weakside defense or box out.
Bonner gets the rebounds from missed foul shots or when no one is around.
Like the way you use junk stats.
April 29th, 2010 at 6:30 pm
Trade TP = Hate Matt Bonner
I don’t think you could ever see ANYTHING positive in what he does. EVER!
There’s absolutely no reason to talk to you about the subject.
Nobody is saying that Bonner is a great rebounder or defender. Most “role” players have their weaknesses. Get it!
April 29th, 2010 at 6:37 pm
Great job by Parker grabbing Beaubois left arm and creating a turnover.
Spurs Win!
April 29th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
Jim just give it up mate and stick to reason
What a fantastic win.
How good does that three guard freak rotation look right now?
Can we not handle that kind of quality all season long? Parker, Hill, Manu is amazing.
When the lights went on the spurs had the metal, good lord that was fantastic.
Wonder what Dallas does now? Nowitski is doing everything he can, the level of D he is getting and he is draining the most fantastic shots, what in the world must he be feeling.

spurs win. i love the fact that everybody played except rmj
April 29th, 2010 at 7:03 pm
Yooooohooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big relief. Phew!
Parker, Hill & Dice hit some big shots down the stretch. I think the Spurs beat one of the best teams in the 2010 post season. Now I hope Portland beats Phoenix so we get some rest before the 2nd round.
Go Spurs!
April 29th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH we did it man. Greeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttttttt win. Can any body saw mark cuban face!
April 29th, 2010 at 7:09 pm
I do hate Matt Bonner. He blows and he is a liability for our team. Blair is more productive in half the time. GET IT HENDERSON?Bonner is barely over 30% FG and 3pt for the series. 16mpg is too many.
Hill shot 50% FG and 3pt this series.
McDyess played better than I expected. I hate the fact that he never takes it to the rim. 0 FT attepts this series…ODD….
Tim= Horrible series. less than 50% FG less than 50% FT. Almost 3Tos a game. Yikes.
Jefferson= Shot over 54% from the field, yet only took 37 shots.
Manu= Shot poorly from three 30%. Aggressive play saved us.
TP= Great comeback. Dont like him taking all the jumpers. 62% FT…..
Players of series= Hill/Manu
April 29th, 2010 at 7:13 pm
Revenge!
What a run the Spurs have gone on down the season stretch… amazing! All you Pop-doubters need to give it up: Coach just tweaks and studies his lineups, and rests his vets, just waiting for the postseason- he’s one of the very best. (And I’m glad Peter Holt gets to make some money this post season, which can only help our cause over the next few seasons.)
Still, I am still surprised the Mavs went out so early this year, bad luck getting SA in round one. Does anyone have the size and talent to stop LA?
Meanwhile, I think round 2 will be a little easier for the Spurs. It’d sure would help if we can hit our effing free throws more consistently!
Can’t wait!
April 29th, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Trade TP:
Seriously, if you want a job in the Spurs’ FO, angle for that.
Until you get it, your synopsis of certain players having had “bad games” b/c of their fg percentage smacks of too much Hollinger truism.
The rest of us are pretty sure that Pop knows how to run the Spurs.
April 29th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
Impression of mavs fan: OOOH, the refs hate us…WAAHHH…the NBA doesn’t want us in the finals…WAAHHH…the Spurs play dirty…WAAHHH…our best players have no heart…WAAHHH…
Go Spurs Go, bring on the Suns!
We can’t sign Bowen and Horry for the next series, can we? How about bringing them back as “Special Asst. Coaches”? If a coach leaves the bench and gets suspended…oh well.
April 29th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
Mavs are out, belying their number 2 seeding and exposing Cuban’s myopic team-building strategy. Portland or Phoenix is next, but I’m more worried about the sleeping giant in LA. Lakers haven’t played their best ball yet.
April 29th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
WOW! What a great defence game.
can any body noticed how we limited F***ing MAVS
Game 6-87 Points——-Spurs Win
Game 2-88 Points——Spurs Win
Game 4-89 Points——Spurs Win
Game 3-90 Points——Spurs Win
What a great consistency in Defence.

Fingers crossed for the blazers to win tonight and create as much rest as possible for us.

Wow, great game. Lots of suffer. But we get the win!!!
Bye, bye Mavs!
April 29th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
Suns are a tougher matchup than Dallas because they have better shooters at every position. Kidd, Marion, Haywood were lousy shooters. Suns have Frye not Haywood, Hill not Marion, and Nash not Kidd. Suns shooters are way better and tougher to defend than the Mavs. We won’t be able to hold the Suns under 90 pts in 4 games. They also have Dragic, Barbosa, and Stoudamire. The Suns are loaded with more scorers than the Mavs.
But it will be easier for us to score hopefully with Nash, Frye, Dudley as defenders. Duncan might have more success in the post if Lopez is still hurt. Plus the open court game benefits Jefferson, Hill, and Parker. But, Parker has a hard time being guarded by Grant Hill.
The Suns are a way tougher matchup than the Mavs.
April 29th, 2010 at 8:13 pm

The thing is.
The most negative people on the forum have been the ones basically caning Pop and others non stop all season while some have been preaching a patient approach with a firm belief that the front office had a better grasp of wtf they were doing than anyone else.
Now instead of just saying yeah they knew what they were doing, there is still this negative miasma over every comment.
Ballhog with the entire pop bum sniffing thing he is into is a prime example of refusing to see the forest for the trees.
The spurs are into round two after beating the 2nd seeded Mavs. Pop caned Rick Carlisle in a coach vs coach capacity while they did it.
Why not just get with the programme and be freaking happy about it.
April 29th, 2010 at 9:15 pm
Suns’ pick-and-roll game between Nash and Stoudamire will be one of Spurs’ biggest problems in the series, if it goes to that. Many of Stoudamire’s points in the regular season against the Spurs were from dives into the lane via Nash feeds. Clogging the lane opens up spots for shooters.
In a nutshell, the series will pit the Suns’ high-risk, high-output offense (consisting of fastbreak and early offense points that tend to generate turnovers or hurried shots as well as low-percentage three-point shots out of pick-and-roll situations) against the Spurs’ inside-oriented, low-output offense achored on penetrations and post-ups.
Spurs have a better chance on offense, percentage-wise, but their chances get even better if they continue to deliver the newfound D they exhibited in the first round.
April 29th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
After posting the comment above, I checked the Suns-Blazers game (Suns appeared headed for a win as they had a 7 point lead with 2 minutes remaining) and guess what. Suns were shooting 50% from the three-point area even in the face of a hostile Portland crowd!

We have the horses to beat Phoenix, so long as we do a good job of controlling the pace.

Dallas then Phoenix. Heh.
