The big news of the day for Spurs fans may be Richard Jefferson opting out of his contract, but we have more. It was reported a couple of weeks ago, but became official today: Quin Snyder is leaving his position as head coach of the Austin Toros and joining Doug Collins’ staff with the Philadelphia 76ers. Per the press release:

The Austin Toros today announced that Head Coach Quin Snyder has accepted an assistant coach position with the Philadelphia 76ers under new Head Coach Doug Collins. Snyder is the second head coach of the Toros, replacing the late Dennis Johnson in 2007. He is the 25th coach in the NBA D-League’s history to promote to a NBA coaching position.

“We are thrilled for Coach Snyder and wish him nothing but success and the best of luck with the 76ers’ organization,” said Toros General Manager Dell Demps. “Quin is a fantastic coach, great teacher, and a friend that I will personally miss.”

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join the staff that Coach Collins has assembled and hope to contribute in whatever way I am able,” said Snyder. “Having spent the past week in Philadelphia, it is clear that this is an exciting time for the team and the organization in general and I am equally excited to have a role.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Snyder will be with the 76ers “in a developmental role,” giving the impression that he’ll be working behind the scenes with players, not necessarily on the bench in game situations. Although it’s unclear at this point.

Losing Snyder is a big hit to the franchise, as he had the valuable combination of improving his players and being a coach they enjoyed playing for. With as much stock as the Spurs put into the Toros franchise, expect them to take their time picking a replacement.
