Wow! I remember the draft night the Spurs picked him. I thought he would be good then and he looks to be exactly what we need at exactly the right time we need him. I’m curious to know the details of the deal. I’ve heard rumor that is was a 3 year deal worth $11mil? If that’s true, he was the biggest damn steal of the offseason anywhere (outside of Lebron signing for less than the max). Even if the deal is for the entire MLE, he would still be a good deal when you look around the league at contracts for comparable players.
from E-N:
Update: Mike Monroe reports Splitter’s contract is for three years and for $11 million total starting at $3.4 million.
This is less expensive than I expected and suggests we have over $2 mill of the MLE, as well as the LLE to play with. I would like
to see us try to pick up two more cheap pieces:
1) A backup SF in the Matt Barnes mold- someone who can defend bigger 3′s and doesn’t mind getting physical.
2) a deep-on-the-bench veteran big who doesn’t mind riding the pine for long stretches but can step in if injury requires it. I’m thinking a thicker Theo Ratliff- maybe a Billy Paultz type.
I don’t think either of these is pie on the sky or too expensive. I’m talking about a 9th and 12th man here.
I think we could add those pieces, keep Temple, Hairston & Gee and have filled 15 roster spots (if my math is right).
Great deal. 3 years for 10-11M. They must have strong armed Splitter pretty well to get away with only giving him part of the MLE.
Barns has been pursued by the Spurs in the past. They won’t get him, but there are other big 3s like James Jones and Rasual Butler. And there’s always Raja Bell (although a 6’5 guard).
Yeah, I can’t wait to see him on the floor either. I love how this wasn’t even a top 10 story on the NBA page on ESPN today. In a year, let’s hope that’s a comical oversight.

I’m stunned at this. 3.4 Million? 2 Million left to play with.
Amazing, simply amazing just how good our front office is.

3 years for him to make a name with the big boys. He was the most important player for the Spurs this offseason, hands down.
I am so so so excited to see his game and how Pop will use him. Can’t hardly friggin wait.

We better improve by light friggin years on the defensive end.

Incredibly good deal….$3.4M for a starting caliber center?? Yes, please…..

Duncan and Dice should get him up to speed in no time, assuming he has a basketball IQ. If Blair continues to improve ala George Hill, watch out!
