Training Camp Woes: Tiago Splitter Injured

The San Antonio Spurs have announced that Tiago Splitter “suffered a strained right plantaris muscle” during today’s practice. Splitter will begin a seven to ten day rehab program before the Spurs announce a timetable for his return. This is discouraging news a mere three days into training camp. The Spurs stacked their training camp roster [...]

So many unknowns make predicting the Spurs season foggy

Maybe I jumped the gun. Okay, I definitely jumped the gun. While I stand by what I wrote a couple weeks ago, I’ll concede that it’s impossible to say for certain. With this season’s San Antonio Spurs, there are so many unknowns that making any projections is akin to throwing darts blindfolded. Sure, you may [...]

The Spurs’ wing situation, training camp predictions

The Wing Situation. Sounds ominous, doesn’t it? Earlier this month, R.C. Buford listed upgraded shooting as a primary objective for the Spurs this season. In the same breath, Buford said the Spurs wanted to find a “wing defender.”

Jacque Vaughn joining the coaching staff may be bigger than expected

The question came casually enough. One reporter in the gathered Media Day scrum asked Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich his choice for biggest offseason acquisition, between Manu Ginobili’s twins, Tiago Splitter and James Anderson. Coach Pop’s response was anything but casual. “Jacque Vaughn.”

Brad Jones named head coach of the Austin Toros

It’s amazing what happens once the NBA season is close. All of a sudden, we have plenty to write about. Today the Spurs announced that Brad Jones will be the head coach of the Austin Toros in 2010-11. Jones takes over for Quin Snyder, who joined the Philadelphia 76ers as an assistant coach this summer.

Tim Duncan still has questions to be answered

The general feeling is that Tim Duncan doesn’t have much time left with the San Antonio Spurs. That he’s on his last legs. Even Tony Parker said on Monday that 2010-11 is their last year competing for an NBA title due to the decreasing shelf life of their future Hall of Famer. At the same [...]

4-Down Episode 15: Talking Spurs and sports with The Onion

Our latest 4-Down Podcast is a fun one. As a guest, Graydon and I had Seth Reiss from The Onion on the show. Seth is the man responsible for many of the stories The Onion has run about Tim Duncan. And there’s a lot. As Seth mentions in the podcast, just search “Tim Duncan” on [...]

Is reducing workload an effective way to increase value?

Tim Duncan averaged over 39 minutes per game in his career before the age of 26. Since then, his minutes have steadily decreased, reaching a career low of 31.3 MPG last year. Despite this decrease in minutes, his production per minute is quite comparable before and after age 26. Clearly, much of this reduction in [...]

Spurs 2010 Training Camp Roster, so far

Training camp is right around the corner for the San Antonio Spurs, and the rest of the NBA. Thankfully for fans, that means the regular season — and actual basketball — is not far behind. But before the regular season tips off, there are still questions to be answered. And we can expect most of [...]

The Spurs’ unfinished offseason

Consider this your morning twofer. R.C. Buford recently told the world the Spurs want to secure home court advantage for the postseason. In the same interview, Buford rehearsed San Antonio’s stipulated goals for the offseason that is nearly behind us. We wanted to do what we could to keep together a group that had a lot of [...]

The Spurs signal a change in philosophy

There is a hungry growl coming from the gut of the AT&T Center. San Antonio GM R.C. Buford says the Spurs, or at least their core, are pounding their forks and knives on the dining room table. And the noise is encouraging. All three [Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker] came to Coach Pop at [...]

How much time does this cast have left on stage?

Last Tuesday, Andrew wrote about the winter of the Duncan Dynasty in San Antonio. His article was pessimistic about how much the current core could contribute to an additional championship, saying “the league passed San Antonio by.’ Of course, this pessimism is not entirely unfounded. The Spurs haven’t won the vaunted NBA title since 2007. [...]
