Austin Toros Schedule Released
I’m curious to see what Austin holds for the Spurs this season. Recent Toros Ian Mahinmi, Marcus Williams and Malik Hairston will vie for court time in San Antonio. Player development in Austin may take a peculiar flavor this year. At least two players from last year’s team were not Spurs, but proved worthy of a permanent spot in the NBA: DeMarcus Nelson and Pops Mensah-Bonsu. Dwayne Jones also played extremely well.
The Toros have announced their 2009/10 schedule.
From the press release:
The Austin Toros open their 5th anniversary season Thanksgiving weekend with back to back games on Friday, November 27th and Saturday, November 28th against Texas rival, Rio Grande Valley Vipers at the Austin Convention Center. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
The Austin-RGV contest is the first of 50 regular season games for the Toros, 22 of which will take place at the Austin Convention Center and 2 at the newly constructed Cedar Park Center. Specifics on 5th anniversary celebration activities and games in Cedar Park will be released in the fall. The Toros will also take part in the 2010 NBA D-League Showcase scheduled Jan. 4-7 at Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho.
“Now that we have our official schedule for the 2009-10 Austin Toros season, we’re all eager to start playing,” said Peter Lubell, Toros COO. “As an organization, we’re working hard on a number of exciting new initiatives for this season, both in the arena and out in the community. Toros fans have a lot to look forward to and it all starts on opening night, Friday, November 27th.”
Also highlighting the 2009-10 NBA D-League Schedule is the All-Star Game and Dream Factory which is part of NBA Jam Session presented by adidas at NBA All-Star 2010 in Dallas.
Fans can purchase season ticket packages for Toros games now by calling (512) 236-8333. Ticket prices range from $8 to $23 per seat. Floor seating and group discount rates are available by contacting the Toros office.
For the first time, the NBA D-League will feature two conferences, East and West, for the 2009-10 season with the Red Claws and Armor joining the Eastern Conference. The Eastern Conference will consist of the Dakota Wizards, Erie BayHawks, Fort Wayne Mad Ants, Iowa Energy, Maine Red Claws, Sioux Falls Skyforce and Springfield Armor, while the Western Conference includes the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, Austin Toros, Bakersfield Jam, Los Angeles D-Fenders, Idaho Stampede, Reno Bighorns, Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Tulsa 66ers and Utah Flash.

Hairston may yet see a few stints with the Toros next season, but for all intents and purposes the core of their team has either graduated to the Spurs or are looking for employment elsewhere.
It’ll be interesting to see whether the Spurs elect to send McClinton to Europe, and Gist back to Europe, or if they place them on the Toros. Due to the loss of Mahinmi, Williams, and Hairston (although not entirely in his case), there will be plenty of minutes and opportunity for them to learn the system and play a significant role offensively.
