Bowen Bullets

  • Video of Bowen’s retirement press conference.
  • Zach Lowe of CelticsHub with the day’s best: “That’s right—”Bruce Bowen groin” is apparently the most popular string of words typed into Google about Bruce Bowen. Sadly, “Bruce Bowen defense” ranks a distant 9th.”
  • Tom Ziiller of Fanhouse: “And while Bowen is said to be a great guy — generous, kind and sharp — in his personal life, he was no picnic on the basketball court. “Good riddance” isn’t quite the right sentiment, but he should know that most of the NBA will not miss him. For Bowen, that’s probably a compliment.”
  • Richard Oliver of the Express-News: “‘Everybody knows, and Pop said the same thing, ‘You’re a Spur,’ ” Bowen said, referring to coach Gregg Popovich.”
  • Rikkido of Pounding the Rock reflects with a collection of links and video.
  • J.E. Skeets wants to hear from you about whether the Spurs should retire Bowen’s jersey.
  • Mike Schmitz of Valley of the Suns: “Yes the news of Bowen’s NBA exit brings a smile to my face, but it also reminds me of all of the heartbreak No. 12 and his running mates bestowed upon the Suns franchise.”
  • Ryne Nelson of Slam: “Some may have hated Bowen’s game, but all can appreciate his accomplishments — not only as a player, but for the Spurs organization and the San Antonio community. When we remember the Spurs dynasty, we’ll not only think about the Big Three, but also about Bruce B (sorry, but I had to claim the rhyme). And for everything he’s accomplished while in the silver and black, Bruce’s jersey deserves a spot among the AT&T Center rafters.”
  • Jeff Garcia of Project Spurs: “In an era of flash and style in the NBA, Bowen wasn’t afraid to do the little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet and it was this workman-like attitude which helped the Spurs win three of their four NBA titles.”
  • When I first heard of Bowen’s retirement, I thought of this post from Robby Lim, which represents the sentimentalism in which Spurs fans consistently swaddle Bowen. Outside of the Big 3, Bowen is far and away the most beloved Spur of the post-Robinson era. It’s impossible for Suns fans to understand.
  • Buck Harvey of the Express-News: “Spurs officials are currently noncommittal. Replacing Bowen this offseason has been more pressing than honoring him.”
  • Kevin Arnovitz riffs on Kevin Pelton.

  • I hope that we can bring him back to SA somehow (not as a player). If he came in as an assistant or a broadcaster that would be wonderful.

  • I find it funny that people will talk so badly about a player who was “perceived as dirty” on the court, but who was a first class person off the court, while at the same time revering someone who is a complete jerk.

  • l love BB but lets not forget Steve Kerr Malik Rose and Bones

  • If Avery Johnson’s jersey was retired, how could Bowen’s not be retired? Who has a better career and played a more significant part in Spurs history during hits championship years??

  • justaguy,
