Dwayne Jones still looking for his shot

Dwayne Jones is visibly frustrated. You’d think a guy who just put up 26 points and 14 rebounds against first round draft pick Byron Mullens, in a win over his team’s conference rival, would look happier. The 6’11″ center stands in his socks, game shorts and un-tucked jersey in the hallway outside the Toros locker [...]

The 13th Roster Spot

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Spurs plan to fill their 13th roster spot with Cedric Jackson of the Erie Bayhawks. Gregg Popovich spoke to the roster vacancy prior to the Cavs game, although he didn’t speak specifically to the Jackson rumor. “Anyone we sign isn’t going to help us this season,” Pop said somewhat expectedly. [...]

Toros’ Alonzo Gee called up by the Wizards

One of the Austin Toros was called up this weekend, but it wasn’t who we thought. Nor was it the team we thought would be calling. Alonzo Gee signed a 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards on Sunday.

Tulsa 66ers 87, Austin Toros 95

Playing in their third game in four days, Austin Toros led start to finish and beat their conference rival the Tulsa 66ers 95-87 on Tuesday night. Tulsa started with a big front line of 6’7″ Larry Owens, 6’11″ DeVon Hardin and the recently-sent down 7’1″ Byron Mullens against the Toros starting front line of 6’6″ [...]

Springfield Armor 108, Austin Toros 111

Not even 24 hours after debuting a rotation boasting three recently-acquired players, the Austin Toros beat the Springfield Armor in overtime 111-108. Both the Toros’ offense and defense appeared to recover from Saturday’s disappointing loss to Bakersfield, as Austin went into the fourth quarter with a 15-point lead and held the Armor to just 62 [...]

A Look at the Austin Experiment in Houston

Over the course of the season Gregg Popovich has shuffled through 20 different lineups with varying degrees of success, or in the case of Friday night’s lineup, lack thereof. A degree in advanced NBA statistics or a talk with Wayne Winston isn’t necessary to conclude a box score in which three of the five starters [...]

Bakersfield Jam 107, Austin Toros 96

A lot was different for the Toros on Saturday night at the Austin Convention Center. There were new players to fit into the lineup and a national television crew, something not often found at the D-League level. In their only nationally-televised game this season, the Toros struggled to acclimate three new players in their rotation, [...]

Toros’ Jones and Gee Named D-League All-Stars

Two Austin Toros were named D-League All-Stars on Tuesday. Center Dwayne Jones, who averages 17.8 points per game and leads the D-League with 15.2 rebounds per game and 21 double-doubles, and guard Alonzo Gee, averaging 20.6 points per game, were each named to the team.

Los Angeles D-Fenders 103, Austin Toros 119

Amidst the crazy partying for the arrival of PTR’s LatinD in the Live Music Capitol of the World and the petitions passed around to enshrine former Toros coach Dennis Johnson in the Hall of Fame, there was a basketball game played at the Austin Convention Center on Thursday night. Curtis Jerrells led the way for [...]

Toros Help Honor the Late Dennis Johnson

On February 22, 2007, Dennis Johnson was standing outside the Austin Convention Center following Toros practice, shortly after playing a light game of one-on-one with one of his players. Moments later, Johnson was on the ground, suffering from cardiac arrest. Paramedics were called and attempted to revive him, but Johnson never recovered and was pronounced [...]

Fort Wayne Mad Ants 124, Austin Toros 133

On the second night of a back-to-back, the Austin Toros looked a lot like their parent club for two and a half quarters. But not in a good way. Austin went down by 24 points in the third quarter against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants and the Toros looked like their legs gave up on [...]

Erie BayHawks 113, Austin Toros 121

I’ll tell you this, there are much worse games to start a new beat with. Toros head coach Quin Snyder picked up two technical fouls in the second quarter and was ejected, and the Toros played a back-and-forth contest with the BayHawks before pulling away late thanks to some solid second-half free throw shooting. The [...]

Per Spurs.com: The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have assigned guard Malik Hairston to the Austin Toros, the NBA Development League team owned and operated by the Spurs. Hairston has appeared in 21 games with San Antonio this season where he averaged 0.5 [...]

Get to Know Your Austin Toros

I have a confession. I love the D-League. I love the potential of wondering “what could be” for most of the guys on the floor. I love the idea of NBA teams using lower-level teams to develop their own players. I especially love how accessible the game is to the average fan and how there [...]
