The Spurs are rebuilding through the draft

If there is an advantage to being a perennial lottery team, it’s the opportunity to piece together a talented core through the draft. GMs who have the luxury of compounding high draft picks over multiple seasons place themselves in the enviable position of acquiring the league’s best young  talent. It sucks to lose, but the long term [...]

The Spurs, Elliot Williams and NBA Draft Rumors

The NBA Draft is always surrounded by a catastrophic whirlwind of rumor. The Spurs are not immune to the dizzying swirl, and it’s often difficult to keep up with all that is supposedly happening with the team. In addition to the Tony Parker trade rumors, there is a less scintillating but more believable rumor attached [...]

Smoke, fire and mirrors: The NBA offseason

Where there is smoke, there’s fire. Or sometimes mirrors. I’m not sure, it depends on the magician I think. Either way, with the 2010 NBA Draft right around the corner the trade winds are blowing plenty of smoke out of San Antonio these days. According to ESPN’s Chad Ford (ESPN Insider required), the San Antonio [...]

Scattered thoughts on Suns-Spurs game 2 adjustments

John Hollinger says we should expect more smallball from the Spurs. I’m inclined to agree. According to another statistical expert, Wayne Winston, the Suns’ best lineup is Steve Nash, Jason Richardson, Jared Dudley, Channing Frye and Amar’e Stoudemire.  After Game 1, he wrote to say the Spurs will win or lose this series based on [...]

Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns look to make the San Antonio Spurs a rival at last

“For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me…it was Tuesday.” —Street Fighter: The Movie And so renews the most heated one-sided matchup in recent NBA history. The San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns are an interesting story to tell, depending on who tells it. [...]

San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks revisited: A blueprint in black and silver

The greatest seventh seed in NBA history? Not exactly a compliment in the eyes of Tim Duncan. Certainly the San Antonio Spurs are the first seventh seed to eliminate a second seed since the NBA Playoffs switched formats to a first round best-of-seven series. But Duncan and the rest of the world will have to [...]

San Antonio Spurs 97, Dallas Mavericks 87: George Hill and Manu Ginobili close out the Mavericks

AT&T CENTER–Given a second shot at a closeout game after their disappointing Game 5 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, the only adjustment needed by the San Antonio Spurs between games was to find the energy and focus they lacked on the road. “Minds are kind of hard to understand sometimes,” Manu Ginobili said. “We went [...]

San Antonio Spurs 92, Dallas Mavericks 89: George Hill and DeJuan Blair earn their playoff stripes

AT&T Center–A game after Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle benched each of his team’s new acquisitions in the second half, the San Antonio Spurs turned to theirs with the trio of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker struggling. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich’s faith was aptly rewarded. Antonio McDyess hit open jumpers, scoring [...]

San Antonio Spurs 94, Dallas Mavericks 90: Reunited, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili are two too much for the Mavs

AT&T CENTER–For all the weapons the Dallas Mavericks acquired over this year, through the majority of the second half it was the same lineup that ousted the San Antonio Spurs in last season’s playoffs unexpectedly staring down the same point guard they still have no answer for. The difference? This season Tony Parker brought some [...]

Pounding the Rock, a strike for strike account of the San Antonio Spurs regular season

The NBA playoffs open up with the San Antonio Spurs in their lowest playoff seeding of the Tim Duncan Era. But to understand why the Spurs are not discouraged about opening on the road in Dallas, instead of the friendly confines of the AT&T Center, there must first be an understanding of their philosophy. San [...]

From Popovich’s “favorite player”, to the NBA’s most improved, George Hill is invaluable to the Spurs playoff hopes

Outside of New York, perhaps no place on Earth has as rich and extensive a basketball mythology as the state of Indiana. In perhaps one of the most famous accounts, the film “Hoosiers”, before a tournament game fictional Hickory high school coach Norman Dale has his players measure off the height of a rim and [...]

San Antonio Spurs 133, Minnesota Timberwolves 111: Tony Parker and George Hill return in win over Minnesota

AT&T CENTER–George Hill made his triumphant return to the starting lineup. Tony Parker, starting on the bench, followed shortly after in reaffirming that the Spurs backcourt rotation is more than Manu Ginobili and company. Playing together for the first time since March 6, Parker and Hill managed to sidestep any questions as to who should [...]

George Hill to start tonight against Minnesota

AT&T CENTER–Having been quick to pick up the nuances of running point guard for the first time on the NBA level, second year guard George Hill has also proven himself to be a quick healer. Gregg Popovich confirmed Hill will be the starter tonight in the pre-game media session. “They told me, ‘Pop, while you [...]

Phoenix Suns 112, San Antonio Spurs 101: Tony Parker, Spurs look slow in defeat

The San Antonio Spurs have never really feared the Phoenix Suns. The sentiment amongst the Spurs’ fan base is that the Suns are championship pretenders–something like a postseason punching bag. But that sentiment is borne of different times, and this Suns team should be taken seriously. These Phoenix Suns, for example, play a slightly grittier [...]

George Hill: Strained right peroneal tendon

The San Antonio Spurs have released a statement saying George Hill will miss Tuesday and Wednesday night’s games, and will be re-evaluated after the Spurs return from their current road trip. Officially, the San Antonio Spurs are calling George Hill’s ankle injury a “strained right peroneal tendon.” The injury is not serious.
