Offseason Breakdown: Glut of Guards

One of the unanswered questions-so far-of this offseason is trying to figure out how the Spurs see their 2009 backcourt. Personally, I see George Hill as a point guard and Roger Mason Jr. as a shooting guard. But that’s not how Pop played them down the stretch, and we have reason to wonder how things [...]

The Draft: Preliminary Thoughts

The Spurs have 3 second round selections in the 2009 draft, number 37, 51 and 53. Most of us would agree that their position of greatest need is small forward. So in the initial weeks of our draft discussions, I’m going to focus more heavily on that position. But honestly, I’m pretty excited about this [...]

Viewer Guides for the Uninitiated

In his end of the season exit interview, Gregg Popovich said the Spurs’ front office plans to use the unusually long summer to…work. One of the first major scouting assignments he named was the Euroleague Final Four, which begins streaming today on ESPN360. Toros Lose to 14ers

The Austin Toros’ season came to an end tonight as they fell to the 14ers 114-111. This one will sting in the morning; the Toros gave up a 10 point 4th quarter lead to the #1 seeded 14ers. But it wasn’t for lack of trying. Marcus Williams had an amazing 33, 12 and 12 triple [...]

The Toros Advance

The Toros defeated the Stampede this evening to advance to the 2nd round of the D-League playoffs. In a fitting tribute to their big league affiliate, they battled back from 16 down and sent the game into overtime on an end of regulation Marcus Williams 3 pointer. They eventually won 119-116. Not surprisingly, Malik Hairston [...]

16th to 15th: Spurs Sign Williams

Saturday night I got all laudatory about Marcus Williams. On Monday, the D-League crashed into the praise pile up -Williams was named to the D-League’s First Team, edging teammates Dwayne Jones and Malik Hairston, both honorable mentions. Apparently Dell Demps and Dennis Lindsey were impressed too. They made the recommendation, and Pop and Buford made [...]

Marcus Williams: Top Performer

Austin Toros point forward Marcus Williams has been named D-League performer of the week for the second time this season. Last week he averaged 27.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 11.5 assists per contest, which, you know, isn’t too bad. Good work, Marcus. The Toros were 2-0 on the week. We’ll be watching to see if [...]
