San Antonio Spurs 102, Memphis Grizzlies 92

The Spurs were able to down the Grizzlies in a steady but unspectacular performance last night. The game continues an encouraging uptick from the Spurs, but this one will be remembered as the game in which Tony Parker fractured the fourth metacarpal in his right hand.

Tony Parker Injured

Add another injury on the season for Tony Parker, this time his shooting hand. Sean Elliott reported during the broadcast that Parker has broken the fourth metacarpal on his right hand while scrambling for a loose ball. X-rays at halftime confirmed the fracture.
The injury is the same one Matt Bonner suffered earlier in the year, [...]

Parker Won’t Play…

Or maybe he will.
Reversing course on an earlier statement, Tony Parker is apparently reconsidering whether he will play for the French national team this summer. Before it was yes, now it’s no-ish.
Jeff McDonald has the scoop.

Elsewhere, Spurs.com has a helpful mailbag with Gregg Popovich. Coach Pop addresses many of our recent talking points: Michael Finley, [...]

Phoenix Suns 110, San Antonio Spurs 113

San Antonio began the fourth quarter of this afternoon’s game against Phoenix with a three point lead. Over the next 12 minutes, the Spurs did not make too many defensive stops; Amare Stoudemire, Steve Nash, and Jason Richardson all scored with ease. Luckily the Suns aren’t exactly known for their lockdown defense either, and the [...]

What is a Strained Left Iliopsoas?

I’m not sure. But Tony Parker has it.

The Spurs just released a statement that reads, “An MRI performed during the exam [this morning] showed that Parker has a mild strain of his left iliopsoas.”

He’s day-to-day.

Tony Parker Out Against Detroit (Updated)

During his pregame interview Gregg Popovich said Tony Parker will be out against Detroit. The team expects Parker to undergo an MRI tomorrow. Parker is dealing with multiple injuries, but the team is currently concerned with his strained left hip flexor.
Because of Parker’s injury, the team will start a small lineup of George Hill, Roger Mason, [...]

Philadelphia 76ers 106, San Antonio Spurs 94

When a team is playing well, it typically moves from lesser to greater certainty as the season progresses. All the big questions that lead the season find a satisfactory resolution in a sharp player rotation, efficient scoring, and a defense that can, at least, get the necessary stops that winning requires. Those things come together, [...]

Tony Parker’s Long Year(s)

After last night’s game Gregg Popovich self-critiqued, saying he could have done a better job managing Tony Parker’s minutes. Parker, as you all know, is hurting. Plantar fasciitis, a tender ankle, and a strained left hip flexor for those keeping score. His 28 points went down smooth, but they earned him a big bucket of [...]

Notes from Wayne Winston, part 1

Wayne Winston, who served as a statistical consultant to the Dallas Mavericks for the last nine years, and is the author of Mathletics, was kind enough to explore a handful of Spurs-related questions with me. Over the next few days I’ll put up a series of short posts detailing the more salient moments of our [...]

Other People: Pruiti on the Pick & Roll

Over at NBA Playbook, Sebastian Pruiti has a tidy little breakdown of a pick & roll play the Spurs ran early in the first quarter of Monday night’s game. Gregg Popovich places Antonio McDyess in the high post and Tim Duncan on the block.

Closing One Window, Cracking Open Another

Last week we ran a series of features exploring three options for the Spurs: Make no move; make a minor roster move; and make a major roster move. There was supposed to be one more- a post arguing that we should make moves focused on future seasons- that for various reasons was never published. After [...]

Shaking the Roster Up

The good folks at Elias Sports Burea are in the business of providing perspective. According to Elias, the Spurs are 3-9 against teams with a .600 or better record. The only Western Conference teams that are worse than the Spurs against said opponents are the Warriors, Timberwolves, Clippers and Kings. League-wide, teams beat .600 teams [...]

Monroe: Ankle Likely to Shelve Parker

Via the Express-News:
The Spurs won’t know until today or Friday how long Tony Parker will be out with another left ankle sprain, but Manu Ginobili offered a hint.
“Tony said it wasn’t so bad, but he will probably miss a couple of games,” said Ginobili, one of three Spurs who will be asked to fill in [...]

Atlanta Hawks 90, San Antonio Spurs 105

Tony Parker left the game in the third quarter after rolling his Plantar Fasciitis-stricken left ankle during a layup. Tim Duncan corralled 27 rebounds, breaking a career single game record. The Spurs beat a +.500 team, a frustratingly elusive achievement this season.
In other words, what would normally be a workmanlike affair against a team that [...]

Sense of Urgency: Another Lockout Could End the Spurs

Spurs fans may feel they have enough worries halfway through this thus far disappointing season. But if there was a call for a new sense of urgency from the Spurs before, ESPN’s Chris Broussard reminded us last night of a much larger problem looming on the horizon.
