Don Newman leaves Spurs coaching staff for Wizards

There have been rumors of the Spurs possibly losing Mike Budenholzer (a yearly tradition) and Jacque Vaughn to other team’s coaching staffs, but the first one to jump ship this offseason is Don Newman. Coach New has joined the Washington Wizards coaching staff under Head Coach Randy Wittman.

I don’t know exactly what Coach New’s role was on the Spurs coaching staff, he was linked with a defensive coordinator-type position with Phoenix last offseason but remained with the Spurs, but I know he’s been the main coach working with the Spurs’ bigs.

For me, I’ll remember his time with the Spurs mostly for being the one to chuckle when Coach Pop goes Serbian or intentionally fouls Shaq to start a game, and for being the one to help Tim Duncan warm up before games.

Will be interesting to see if this move elevates Jacque Vaughn to a bench position on the coaching staff (assuming he remains with the team) as opposed to his behind-the-bench role he currently has. I’m also hoping to see Jacque coaching the summer league team in Vegas.
