Duncan Will Not Play, Listed as Day-to-Day

Tim Duncan will miss tonight’s game against the Raptors because of swelling in his left ankle. He underwent an MRI that revealed no structural damage, and will be listed as day-to-day headed forward.

Although a bit ominous, this is likely to elicit a fair amount of overreaction throughout the media. Duncan’s long-term concerns are his knees, not his ankles. That being said, I’m glad the team is being overly cautious.

  • I’m guessing then one of the bigs on the IL will be activated? Let’s see how Manu does in leading the team. Also, if this means Blair gets more minutes. Let’s see how well he responds. An early test… this is what the offseason was all about.

  • Good to see the team being cautious early in the season.

Hopefully Blair gets good minutes, and plays well (He’s in my Fantasy team, it’s a deep league).

Interesting to see who is going to get activated.

Going to be a tough game without either Parker or Duncan, Bosh has been keeping up solid averages, gonna be hard to stop without TD.

  • we are still playing amazing though, even without timmy and tony, matt bonner’s dunk was amazing and he’s doing a great job in duncan’s place. ginobili has over 30. great man great

  • got that right! Manu is a one man wrecking crew with killer 3′s

  • After the past two seasons, I find myself doubly rooting for Manu’s long-distance stroke to stay nice - not because his baskets count more from the 3 pt. line, but because he can’t hurt himself way out there. Man it is a weird thing to be a Spurs fan.

Obviously we’re not shooting 50% from the 3 point line every night, but I think we got a taste of the dynamics expected by the front office in trading for RJ. Still, even though this was a shootout, it was as our T Varner said - we won the game on rebounding.

Where’s kaveh? I want him to take a look at RJ’s stat line tonight and tell me how it affects his PER. It’s weird, the past two seasons, in playoff games and close games, I’ve been rooting every night for one guy to find his stroke and contribute a few baskets to get us through those 3rd quarter droughts when Tony and Tim (and sometimes Manu) couldn’t quite do it themselves. This season, I’m looking for one of our forwards or guards to make a contribution at the rim by either picking up those errant rebounds, or collapsing quickly on defense when someone gets beat. Obviously, Ginobili’s 36 is the big item in the box score, but not so much that they completely overshadow his 4 blocks.

As an aside, I wonder how much these new rims might affect positioning on defensive rebounds… Players are so used to anticipating the bounce that a minor change, like more give on the sides of the rim, could make a large difference, right? I’m not blaming their troubles on this! If it affects one rebounder, it affects all. I’m just curious.

  • GI-NO-BLEE!

Ginobli leads the team in pts, assists, steals, and blocks!

We look like the Suns, a high offensively potent(14 for 28 from 3 pt land) no defense playing team. Talk about limited prospects for a deep playoff run, but plenty of entertaining home games during the regular season appear to be the norm. And lots of road game blowout losses against playoff caliber teams.

    An intriguing season for sure.

  • If there should be one game this season where Pop throws his cares of being defensive minded to the wind, it should be this one. I don’t care that we’re only 6 games into the season to make that judgment. I’m just sayin’ this was one hell of an entertaining game.

I have had a little blog of my own for a while now, and wrote an entry about today’s there. My name should take you there. Visit it please!

  • This is the just the kind of antidote the Spurs needed after the defeat against the Blazers. Much suprisingly without the service of Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. The whole team pull things together to grind out this result.

Happy to see George Hill doing a great job in taking over from Parker. Finally we get to another good reason why RJ is here. Special thanks to both Dice and the rookie Blair for the help they provided in defense.

With this performance, there must a whole lot of confidence going on in the locker room. Let’s hope another repeat against the Mavs on Wednesday.

    As for Manu….

Well I must admit that I never thought that this kind of performance from him ever again. I guess my main reason must be based on the fact his body might not be able to take it (when you wear & tear in consideration) after these years of aggresive and hustling game that we’re all very much used to see it from him.

Then again, you can’t change a person habit that easily. Manu does what he does best and not even another pain from his body will stop him from doing so. And that’s why we love him so much, don’t we.

    THE LEGEND CONTINUES….

  • Although it was a horrendous night in terms of our opposing team’s FG %, I was tremendously impressed with our 16 offensive boards (40% of total rebounds). Blair and Mcdyess were responsible for over 50% of these o-boards and others contributed even without Tim around. It really shows how it can help compensate for the Raptor’s ridiculous 59% shooting from the field.

  • I remember seeing that Hairston had a -7 +/- score last night while playing only 1 minute. After re-watching the game, I realized it was cause he was in for the last 10 seconds of the 2nd and 3rd quarter where the Raptors hit two 3′s.

Just an interesting tidbit I thought I’d share.

  • Ah, I was wondering why that was. I knew when he was in, but couldn’t remember that two 3s were taken.

  • If we play this good without TD then why not him coming off the bench?

    It solves two problems:

One, preserving him for the post-season.

Second, utilizing our young bigs (Haislip & Mahmini)
