El Conclusion: It’s Tony Parker and Tim Duncan’s World

by

San Antonio Spurs 102 FinalRecap | Box Score 95 New Orleans Pelicans
Boris Diaw, PF 32 MIN | 2-8 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 2 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 5 PTS | +2Spurs went to Matt Bonner for a big stretch to guard Anthony Davis at the end of the game. That’ll pretty much sum up Diaw’s night. He wasn’t great on either side of the ball, but that’s going to happen. New Orleans’ length up front seemed to bug him.

Tim Duncan, PF 29 MIN | 10-20 FG | 1-3 FT | 7 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 6 BLK | 4 TO | 21 PTS | -10He was pretty terrible in the first half and pretty great in the second half. We’ll go ahead and weight the halves differently here (I’m the grade giver, not you!). Timmy also had five blocks in the second half. Maybe he stole some of Anthony Davis’ powers at halftime because you shouldn’t do that at age 37.

Tony Parker, PG 36 MIN | 12-24 FG | 8-9 FT | 2 REB | 9 AST | 0 STL | 2 BLK | 2 TO | 32 PTS | +11Remember a year ago went Parker just went nuts for six weeks before going down with an injury for a few weeks. The Spurs wisely ran a pick and roll against either Greg Stiemsma or Alexi Ajinca and Parker carved them up.

Cory Joseph, PG 24 MIN | 2-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | -9The effort was there on defense and New Orleans has some skilled guards so that was a mixed bag. Early on though, he scored a couple of baskets in a row and it looked like that might keep up, but 5 points was all he ended up with. Would be great to see him involved a little more offensively. Even if it’s just a corner 3.

Danny Green, SG 30 MIN | 1-7 FG | 4-4 FT | 7 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 7 PTS | +9Rust was to be expected, but the rebounding and defense has been missed so much, especially once he and Kawhi went down. Obviously you’d like the shot consistency to come back, but right now the Spurs need help on the perimeter defense.

Matt Bonner, PF 14 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 3 STL | 2 BLK | 0 TO | 3 PTS | +13When Bonner plays good defense, it’s not that surprising anymore. But when he does a good job containing Anthony Davis, it’s surprising. It wasn’t all Bonner obviously, but he didn’t make it easy for Davis in the second half and that helped the Spurs get back in it.

Tiago Splitter, C 21 MIN | 2-3 FG | 2-2 FT | 7 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 6 PTS | +10Forget the stat line. While Splitter was hurt, the Spurs had zero paint protection while Duncan was on the bench. Splitter brings paint protection even if he doesn’t have these gaudy block numbers. With him and Green back in the fold we should see the Spurs defense hit those November/early December numbers.

Patty Mills, PG 21 MIN | 2-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | +10Hit a couple of big shots in the second half, but was non-existent otherwise. Did do a good job pestering Austin Rivers and Brian Roberts on defense.

Shannon Brown, PG 4 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | +2#LetShannonDunk Is that still a thing? Can we bring it back?

Nando de Colo, PG 11 MIN | 2-2 FG | 1-2 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | +1Keep raising that trade value, Nando.

Marco Belinelli, SG 20 MIN | 4-7 FG | 5-5 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 13 PTS | -4Came off the bench and looked pretty good in that role. No one’s been affected by the Spurs’ injuries as much as Belinelli. He’s not getting set up for open shots like he was before and he’s having to guard bigger guys. Expect his numbers to get better as the Spurs get healthier.

Gregg PopovichSome great adjustments in the fourth quarter as he outclassed his coaching padawan, Monty Williams.

One Thing We Saw

  1. The offense looked really bad for three quarters. That’s when Parker and Duncan took over. That’s probably sustainable against the East Coast swing of the Rodeo Road Trip, but hopefully the offense finds its rhythm by the All-Star break.
  • I need more cowbell

Offensively the spurs struggled all night but the defense finally got better.
Splitter defense in the paint finally allowed us to get some stops inside. He did a good job being mobile and stuff. I can live with outside shots going in like crazy just not inside.
Totes underrated Splitter and how he helps this defense.
