El Conclusion: Spurs clobber Raptors after shaky start

by

San Antonio Spurs 116 Final

Recap | Box Score

103 Toronto Raptors
Tim Duncan, PF 24 MIN | 6-11 FG | 2-5 FT | 7 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 14 PTS | +5
Just one of those Timmy games where he was good and efficient when he was in, but wasn’t needed after about halfway through the third quarter.
Jeff Ayres, PF 9 MIN | 2-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 4 PTS | -18
Got the start for Tiago Splitter and seemed overwhelmed to begin the game. You can’t completely blame him. He’s not used to playing with the starters, so his struggles are understandable. Still, he wasn’t awesome.
Kawhi Leonard, SF 29 MIN | 3-8 FG | 1-1 FT | 7 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 8 PTS | +9
Nice all around game for Kawhi, especially those four dimes. He was part of the unit that started the turn around for the Spurs in the second quarter.
Tony Parker, PG 28 MIN | 6-16 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB | 6 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 15 PTS | -2
See the Tim Duncan section, except add in the part where TP went bananas at the end of the second quarter and scored eight of the Spurs final 13 points.
Danny Green, SG 26 MIN | 5-7 FG | 2-2 FT | 3 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 2 BLK | 0 TO | 14 PTS | +15
#IcyHot. We’ve gotten a lot of the icy lately, but he was on fire today. Green took full advantage of the Spurs ball movement (30 assists on the night). He also had two blocks and those are always fun.
Aron Baynes, PF 21 MIN | 7-9 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 14 PTS | +19
What was this, an Austin Toros game?! Baynes enjoyed a career night including one really nice looking drive to the basket that ended up in the only Aron Baynes poster we may ever see. Put it this way, in 21 minutes he matched Jonas Valanciunas in points and outrebounded him.
Matt Bonner, PF 7 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 0 PTS | -8
Got lost in the big man shuffle tonight.
Boris Diaw, PF 18 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | +6
He didn’t do anything wrong tonight, but he also didn’t do anything right. I really didn’t even notice he was out there.
Cory Joseph, PG 8 MIN | 2-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 4 PTS | -4
He doesn’t get many minutes, but I’m always impressed that he produces when he’s in. It’d be really easy for a guy who thought he had a roster spot on lockdown to not give a damn, but Joseph keeps at it.
Patty Mills, PG 16 MIN | 3-6 FG | 2-2 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 11 PTS | +8
3s on 3s on 3s. Mills was right in the middle of the Spurs runs in the second and third quarter.
Nando de Colo, PG 7 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | -8
Got in during mop up time. Wonder if we’ll see him back in Austin once the Spurs wrap up this quick road trip.
Manu Ginobili, SG 23 MIN | 5-10 FG | 2-2 FT | 5 REB | 9 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 16 PTS | +21
I’m starting the Manu Ginobili 6th Man of the Year campaign. It’s time. He’s been brilliant and the best all around bench player in the league this season. This second unit would fold without him. Marco Belinelli and Patty Mills are having career years, in part because of the catch-and-shoot situations Manu sets up for them.
Marco Belinelli, SG 23 MIN | 4-5 FG | 2-2 FT | 1 REB | 4 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 12 PTS | +22
Just keep making those open looks, Marco. Oh, and the fun passes. Keep doing that too.
Gregg Popovich
Guys got rest, guys got assists and the Spurs locked up their defense after a disastrous first quarter. Overall great game.

Ayres with a C-? He hasn’t had one game this season worthy of any grade above an F.

  • NYC

Wait, we have a third Frenchman on the team? Oh yeah…. Huh.

  • NYC

The Spurs have 9 players imported from overseas to 5 domestic products. (Counting Duncan as an import and Bonner still as an American.) Spurs are officially the international all-stars team.

It is tough to counter the 6th Man with Manu being as consistent as he is, the spearhead of the Foreign Legion

  • Andrew

The Foreign Legion sounds like a Venereal Disease. Thanks Dan McCarney for that gem.
