I finally stopped grieving over the loss, but that picture was a swift kick in the groin. It’s been a hell of a season…hopefully 2010 will be even better (and end on a higher note).
It’s hard to not hold onto hope when the spurs are involved. I am hopeful for next year, but it really felt like the end of a era tonight. I am only 23, I have been blessed with the dominance of Tim’s spurs since I started watching basketball. Where does it go from here? Do we rebuild? Tonight I saw that the core of Duncan and Parker are still strong, but I have to wonder about the future of the team. I want to hold out hope for the future.
I echo the sentiments of Chuck. Where do I go from here? The Spurs in June are such a mainstay that I guess I am going to have to develop some sort of other hobby for the rest of the season.
Congrats on a great season. I know that we have been given such a great run that a let down is only natural, but I still feel some remorse for the way it happened.
I know that there is more good b-ball to play but I guess I just am going to have to deal with this year.
I’m not a Spurs fan but I respect the hell out of them and I’ve known Graydon since he since he was a kid and I like the site.
I’m a Cowboys fan and I remember when they lost in the first round of the playoffs to Carolina-must have been 1997 or so. I remember toasting a great team and knowing that competing for titles was probably over. I don’t think it is quite that dire for the Spurs-get Manu back and reload with some younger guys and some targeted veterans and you have a shot next year. However, it seems like its LeBron and Kobe for a while so I wouldn’t bet on the Spurs winning one anytime soon.
That’s a lot of rambling but as a Mavs fan I wish my team had been more like yours over the last decade. You’ve been fun to watch and I hope the the next 4 years won’t be exclusive to the Lakers/LeBron’s and the Mavs and Spurs have a place.
Congrats to Dallas and especially coach Carlisle, who in my opinion get’s the series MVP. He’s got his team running on all cylinders, which isn’t easy this time of year.
That said, I still think Dallas has huge problems on defense, which will be magnified next series against Denver. I suspect the Denver-Dallas series to be a high scoring affair, with neither team especially effective on defense. We’ll see.
I’ve felt this year Pop did a great job getting to 50 wins. Too much adversity, and not enough talent wouldn’t let them advance far in the playoffs. One never routes for their favorite team to lose, but the silver lining is Tony and Timmy get a bit more of rest (before Tony is off to France for another summer of hoops), and the management gets time to figure out what’s next.
I’m most looking forward to what you guys at 48 minutes will be talking about in the off season. You both did a great job this season. Go Spurs.
I will mourn this for the next week but deep down I am really optimistic for next season. I think we all agree that the front office needs to make another move to make our bench deeper but there’s plenty of upside. Tony has turned into a superstar, Timmy and Manu will get extended rest this summer , Hill will be a year older, and we still have Mason, Thomas, Bonner and Gooden. Can’t wait for next season!
I was at peace with it….then this picture depressed me. But, it wasn’t for lack of effort; not this year I guess.
I was thinking of the recent teams that were supposed to be the ones to topple the Spurs: Hornets lost by 60 last night; Jazz barely made the playoffs; Suns missed it completely. Only Lakers and Mavs have done it, but they’ve also had down years in between.
Its been a good run. And we’re not done yet…
Pathetic series. My anger tells me that every active Spur not named Duncan, Parker, Bowen, Hill or Thomas should feel ashamed. My brain tells me the series was lost at the 3pt and FT line. My heart tells me that everything happens for a reason, thus proving the need for a younger bench, provides TD and TP with a few extra weeks of rest, and gave Hill one helluva stage to prove his value and gain experience.
I’m shocked at the result, even w/out Manu, because the Mavs are not special. I’m disgusted that no one else could make shots to support the big 2/3. I’m appalled that Mason scored 1 point the last two games, 8 in the last 3. I feel reality proved why it’s better to win boring with defense than be what we were: a team with regular season role players which meant not very tough and begging for outside shots to fall. Time to get back to our foundation next season. I look forward to it.
Dampier will get the last laugh when he’s fishing in about two-three weeks. These Mavs overachieved-they got up to play the Spurs.
Dampier can do that “big balls dance” when he catches a sizable trout. I’m sure all the locals will be impressed.
Duncan played a stretch of basketball that was perfect. He’s the greatest power forward in the history of the game-and we’re lucky to have seen him do what he’s done. Here’s to a few more years.
Thank you Bruce, for allowing me to yell “BRUUUUUUUUCE” during the pre-game intros for perhaps the last time and hitting a corner 3 ball for old times sake.
Thank you, Spurs organization, for the inspirational video that didn’t inspire until The Admiral was shown and reminding us that we have been the most blessed franchise for the past 2 decades.
Dylan - Agreed. A big shout out to the fans that stayed until the final whistle and gave the guys a standing O.
Silver and Black, I’ll cheer for you in battle, but I’m also pretty good at passing a beer at the old fishin’ hole. Rest up fellas, we’re kicking some ass next year!
Man, I hate to say this, but the Spurs must be the absolute WORST team in the NBA. I mean come on, how do you lose a series to the freakin’ Mavericks? And especially lose it 4-1!. Holy cow, Rutgers University would have played a better series than the Spurs did. And all of you guys saying that Duncan “dominated” the last quarter need to take another look at the film. He dominated because Dallas was already celebrating their win. They weren’t even bothered a little bit by the thought of a Spur comeback so what does that tell you? The Duncan era is so DONE it smells like dinner. Face up to it. Better get into the LeBron sweepstakes if you ever want to win another title! Just remember, you’ve won a bunch of them over the past decade, just like the Cowboys did in the early 90′s. But everything comes to an end, and I believe we just witnessed the end of the Spurs title runs. Oh well. There are greater tragedies in the world.
I feel ya. I really do. But I have to come down on the side of free speech. Although annoying, his comment isn’t profane, nor does it directly antagonize any of the other commenters.
Don’t worry. Guys like that never stick around, and if he does become a continual disruption, I’ll handle it.

The Spurs played like it was mid-December. **** that. What a horrible way to end it.

Well, I guess hope is not an effective strategy.
I hoped Bonner and Mason would hit some shots.
I hoped our D would stop them from scoring over 90.
I hoped we would write another chapter in our championship book by mounting an epic comeback.
I hoped we’d overcome a season of inconsistent play by gelling in the playoffs.
I hoped we’d get 25 and 12 from the Thomas/Gooden duo.
I hope I’m not hungover tomorrow.
I KNOW I’ll be cheering for the Spurs next year!

Kinda wish Bowen would have been allowed to get back on the court in the last minute.
i still love the Spurs though

I’m going to hold onto the image of Duncan completely dominating the fourth quarter. He’s not done yet and the window definitely has not closed.

I’m upset Dampier got that last laugh, wish Parker could’ve stuck it to him one more time in the series
April 28th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
Right on SpurredOn, I grew up on that type of defense, and it was very frustrating to see our defense so porous all season long.
