  • wow, I remember that issue…

  • Jeez, Duncan looks like a little kid, despite standing among skyscrapers. Whatever happened to Keith Van Horn? I don’t even know the other guys, except for Allen, of course.

  • I wonder who the Spurs would’ve taken in the 97 draft if they didn’t land the #1 spot. Could you imagine if we had Keith Van Horn. Yikes.

  • Timmy sure was pissed by the “Center” tag :D

Also, Allen a Forward? I remember Van Horn, Kittles and even the O’Bannon’s (Charles and Ed) but I don’t recall Minor. Did something happen to him? Did he even play for an NBA team?

  • If I remember correctly, Duncan did not get the unanimous Rookie of the Year, one vote went to Van Horn. I have to believe it was an East Coast Writer, maybe a Boston area writer. :)

  • I remember all but Minor and that Allen guy (kidding).
I thought O’Bannon was going to be good, too, from what I remember of UCLA’s Championship. Interesting note: As of 2009, he (Charles O’Bannon) was playing for the Toyota Alvark of the Japanese Basketball League, and was leading that league in scoring. Thanks, Wiki.

  • I even remember George (Jiri) Zidek lol

  • Is Tim wearing a necklace and a watch in that photo???

  • Wow, I looked up the 1997 draft class and it stunk. Other than Timmy, only Chauncey Billups and T-Mac were All-Stars. It was the worst draft in the 90′s as far as sending guys to the All-Star game.

Ryan Minor was drafted in the 2nd round of the ’96 draft but decided to play pro baseball instead, where he played over a decade between the pro’s and the minor leagues. Thanks wikipedia.

I don’t recognize that blue sleeved arm on the left… anybody remember that arm making a team?

  • RJ, you remember correctly. One Rookie of the Year vote did go to Van Horn. Duncan got 113 of the possible 116 points, Van Horn had the other 3.

Chris K., Duncan did wear some jewelry in the early days, most often his Yin-Yang necklace. He even had a tongue stud for a short time.

  • No way…wait…a tongue stud is a tongue piercing??

  • Yup, it’s a tongue piercing. It was a silver stud in his tongue. I have a gif of it but I have no clue how to post it here.

  • Wow, he looks so boring and traditional that never imagined he wore a tongue piercing…

    Credits for our Big Fundamental

  • Martin, he also has a giant tattoo of Merlin on his back. He wanted that to be his nickname in the NBA, but The Admiral and others wouldnt let him.

  • Just for clarification, the Merlin tattoo is on Duncan’s chest. He has a Skele-Jester on his shoulder blade.

Duncan asked the league for ‘Merlin’ on his jersey in 1997, they refused, citing league uniform policies.

  • Kittles was actually a very solid guy too who if i remember correctly got shut down more from injuries than erosion of skills.

  • Hey guys. I saw the site through a link from Daily Thunder and thought I’d just let you know about Ryan Minor, since most of you don’t remember him (and I don’t blame you).

He actually got drafted and played for the Baltimore Orioles. He was a backup for a few years - his most memorable accomplishment being that he was the guy to replace Cal Ripken, Jr. the night he broke his playing streak.

so, yeah. The More You Know, right? :) Great blog.

  • @ Bushka: Right, Kerry Kittles had a few good seasons for the Nets, but repeated injuries ended his career.
    Same with Keith Van Horn.

  • Wait… nobody else thinks this looks like a boy band poster?? I mean, look at KEITH!!!!
