Is that Willie Anderson? I don’t really recognize him, but I think I remember his number being 40.

That is Willie Anderson (40). Also Terry Cummings (34) and Clyde “the Glide” Drexler:)

  • Alamobro

Yep, Willie Anderson, Terry Cummings and Clyde Drexler…

The Spurs were already perfectly synchronized…

Old Contour Willie in one of the more painful series I’ve ever endured as a Spurs fan…

Although I’m too young to remember the series (I was only 6 and just starting to get into the NBA), I have read about it several times. It sounds like it was a real heartbreaker.

I was in fifth grade and it was the first and last time I bet on a Spurs game. I lost $5 to a guy in my class. It was pretty heartbreaking but not as bad as the loss to Houston in the the WCF. I love seeing pictures of those 90s teams.

Oh, okay. I only recognize Terry Cummings’ name, but of course I know about The Glide. This was also before my time. I’m not sure what year this was in, but I read that Anderson left the Spurs in ’95, and I was 6 at that time, so I’m guessing that I was even younger whenever this game took place.

    Damn you Rod Strickland….

When I became a SPuRS Fan in grade school, Cadillac and Willie Anderson were THE team. I had such pride for my city, I didn’t realize when going to my first game we had the worst record in the NBA. Willie had this move where he’d approach the basket from the side corner, extend to dunk the ball from the front side, pull it back as a fake and float under the rim past the defender, and finish with a reverse slam on the other side. Chill Anderson was my favorite Young Gun, and then all the others came: David, TC, Wingate, Sean and Rocket Rod. I felt bad for him in Toronto. Thanks for the memory.

That was 19 years ago and I still remember the game 7 of that series very well. One of the most painful memories as a Spurs fan. If I remember correctly, Spurs were up by like 7 with 2 minutes left as wel. Some of you blame Rod Strickland for the no look pass, but the truth is, if Sean Elliot had cut to the basket like he was supposed to, it would have been a great pass & Spurs would have won!!!

I became a Spurs fan in the late 80s, Alvin Robertson, Johnny Dawkins, Greg Caddilac Anderson & Willie Anderson. Willie was my favorite player, such promising future as well. I still remember reading some basketball publication in 1990 comparing Willie Anderson and Reggie Miller and asking the question who the better “2″ guard is. Well, we all know how history turned out.

1999 was a long time coming for those who witnessed how close the SPuRS were to a finals appearance in 1990 coupled with the overwhelming youth of that team’s core performers: sophmores Rod, Maxwell, Willie. rookies David and Sean. Wingate and Reggie Williams could not have been in the league more than a few years. Brick and TC were even younger than what the Spurs call a “veteran” these days. As devastating as that game seven was, the embarassing losses to Golden State and the Jazz, Barkley’s shot over Robinson and the Rodman fiasco–these were all much worse in light of how the decade began.
