Misfire? I don’t get it. Acquiring Dennis Rodman was the right move at that time. We needed toughness and interior d (not off the ball d that five-0 provided).

Misfire? It is not a coincidence that five-0 won the MVP with Rodman by his side. In the playoffs, we ran into the best center of his generation (Hakeem) and the best team of that era (not named the Bulls).

Misfire? Dennis was actually a fan fave in 93-95. I went to a sizable percentage of games during those years. Dennis was 2nd only to five-o.

Misfire? Ninja came back to the Spurs for an Irish drunk.

Goody two shoes revisionism….plain and simple.

  • Menudo,

I apologize. I accidentally published the photo (which will be part of a series) without the complete title. I actually sympathize with your thoughts on Rodman (he has a special place in my heart), but the series also isn’t meant to be a concrete statement on my part as much as a spark for debate.

  • I agree with Menudo, the only misfire was giving him away to the Bulls for Will Purdue. Bob Hill did a terrible job with Rodman. Pop was around at the time so I don’t know he could have done a better job managing him as a coach, but Rodman definitely did great things for the Spurs.

  • Judging by what Graydon said, I guess the “maniacs” part wasn’t originally in the title. I’ll give him maniac, haha. Still, I can’t help but wonder what things would have been like if we had kept him. . . .

  • Regardless of your opinions on Rodman, that’s an awesome picture.

  • i think its a pretty good character statement. i dont remember rodman brawling with anyone (except the occasional cameraman), but i also dont think he ever backed down. definitely had a “bring it on” mentality. i loved the guy.

  • I would agree that Rodman was a “misfire.” Regardless of how well we did in the regular season, we couldn’t get over the hump with that psycho’s constant attention-grabbing and idiotic actions off the court. Remember the Madonna fiasco in the playoffs? I couldn’t stand the guy, and I think we could have gotten more for a young Sean Elliott just entering his prime. Bob Bass settled when he made that trade…

My bad, G. I get awful defensive about Dennis Rodman -and even more so about Stephen Jackson- by the Goody Two Shoes Mafia that systematically infiltrates all things Spurs.

No matter what I’ll ever post- you’re still the best Spurs blogger out there (and believe me — I’ve read ‘em and heard ‘em all). Keep up the good work, G. *mwah*

  • Menudo,

No big deal, my man. I appreciate the fire.

I actually like Rodman a lot. As a kid my favorite players were always gritty, slightly unhinged post players (Rodman, Larry Johnson, Charles Oakley). But I also think he epitomizes some of the rough-around-the-edges decisions the team has made in the past. Although I consider him a maniac, not a misfire, in some ways he is a good entry-point for a series of photos addressing both.

  • Menudo has been a Rodman apologist since before “Al Gore invented the internet”. While never confirmed, we’ve always assumed he and Rodman once bonded at a Pearl Jam moshpit.

Just don’t get him started on Ed Nealy…

  • i seem to recall a certain playoff series against utah…robinson was injured and the enitre spurs team gave up on the game and the series…save rodman. he never quit. i respect that effort.

  • @Jones

Please give credit where it is due and stop perpetuating myths - that’s what the “father” of the internet did w.r.t. Al Gore:

To stay on topic - I can’t imagine Rodman ever becoming like Duncan, so while he was the right move at the time, his trade was also the right move for Spurs to become such a model organization for the past decade.
