Game 1: Memphis Grizzlies 101, San Antonio Spurs 98

by

AT&T CENTER-San Antonio won many of the little battles but ultimately lost the war in the Spurs 101-98 Game 1 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies-their sixth straight series opener loss.

Behind Tim Duncan’s 13 rebounds, the Spurs outrebounded the Grizzlies 40-38, holding Memphis to just five offensive rebounds and outscoring them 15-5 on both second chance and fast break points.

“It should (have been enough), but it wasn’t,” Tim Duncan said. “We just didn’t do enough down the stretch and that was the game right there. We stuck to our game plan, did a good job of keeping them off the offensive glass, but they made more plays down the stretch.”

The guy normally responsible for making those plays of course was in street clothes today, but Manu Ginobili’s absence does not take away from what was a very solid game plan from the Memphis Grizzlies. If you can’t catch them, beat them. The Grizzlies set the tone early, dragging the San Antonio Spurs into the ugly game that was once the Spurs’ calling card.

Several of these Spurs have danced this dance before, and for a moment it was shades of Jerry Sloan and the Utah Jazz again, playing the notes through the tweets of the referees’ whistles. Legs, arms, knees and elbows at every twist and turn.

For the game, the Spurs shot 47 free throws, and they’ll take every single one of them every night, but the very act of fouling slowed the Spurs offense to a grind, removing the layups, 3-pointers, and ball movement that carried them to the top seed in the West.

Memphis, not known for their outside competency, managed to match the Spurs stride-for-stride in their greatest weapon with six 3-pointers-none bigger than the Battier 3-pointer in the last minute.  And it’s not that the Spurs missed terribly from the outside (40 percent), they simply had trouble finding them.

Matt Bonner, in a slight bit of playoff redemption, nailed half of the four 3-pointers he attempted, but if you remove a 3-pointer heaved to beat a clock-there were only three clean shots he got away.

Whenever the Spurs managed dribble penetration, or movement within a set, Memphis simply fouled. Better to yield a set of free throws or reset the offense than an open 3-pointer.

The Spurs have been a marvel of engineering and execution all season, today the Grizzlies were the wrecking ball. Against a team that creates as many turnovers as anyone in the league, 10 turnovers is an acceptable number. But when weighed against just 13 assists, for a Spurs team that moves the ball as well as any in the NBA, the sort of fight the Grizzlies had in mind takes shape.

In each of the Spurs biggest runs, through the first and third quarters, the Spurs had five assists in both stints. In the second and fourth quarters, the Spurs had three combined, with no assists in the second. For the game the Grizzlies had 22 assists to the Spurs 13.

“We were best when were attacking quickly and not letting them set up their defense,” Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich said. “There were periods in the game where we didn’t do that, we slowed up a bit too much.

“We’d like to keep the pace up a little better.”

Picking up the pace to neutralize the combo of Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol as much as possible, that is. The two combined for  49 points on 19-25 from the field, and generally wreaked havoc on the Spurs interior defense.

For Randolph, 25 and 14 is a walk in the park and even given his 10-15 shooting he was reasonably contained for stretches of the game for a player of his ilk. That is to say that he had no offensive rebounds.

What the Spurs cannot live with is the play of Marc Gasol, who appeared every bit determined to make Popovich eat his dumb trade remarks famously made years ago.“Marc is great, he’s one of the best young centers out there,” Randolph said. “He works hard, he plays the right way, and I love playing with him. He’s going to be an all-star.”

Future All-Star credentials aside, chances are the younger Gasol is not going to hit 9-of-10 shots in Game 2. Marc channeled the ghost of Dirk Nowitzki’s Game 1 performance from last year, hitting from all over the floor in a breakdown Duncan took personal responsibility for after the game.

“We know they’re going to be some big bodies, we know that’s what their game is based on,” Duncan said. “Them making shots, we’re going to have to pay a little more attention to them obviously. Especially myself with Marc. I think I gave him an easy there trying to keep half an eye on Zach instead of focusing on Marc.”

If this was an outlier performance from Gasol, the Spurs should expect to get Manu Ginobili back and be in great shape heading through the rest of the series. But if this is simply the beginning of a breakout performance?

The Spurs could be in a world more of hurt than their 47 free throws attempted suggests.

  • Jeremiah

Bonner simply can’t get 24 minutes of playing time against this front line. If that keeps happening, we’re going out in the first round :/

  • Jacques

It’s one of those games when everything seems to click to the right way and then falls apart. I have no one to point the finger to….. Watching the replay however, I wonder if RJ should have made the extra pass in the last play. RJ rarely shoots threes from the middle and there was about 3 seconds left…. possibly Bonner?

  • Bruno

Noooo, Timmy would be better option, Bonner would airballed the ball

  • Mark B

I thought it was a good shot. He was open. And he’s a good shooter. His percentage ia 2nd on the team, and Bonner wasn’t open. Even so, it’s more likely that he would miss than hit, since he’s about a 45% 3 point shooter. The best you can do is take the opportunity. On average, he ties up the game in a situation like about half the time. This wasn’t the good half.

  • Mark B

Honestly, in a situation like that, you can’t call one player’s number. You do as the Spurs did, and run motion to get a few guys around the 3 point line. RJ ended up with an excellent open look. I’d go with that 100 times out of 100. Unfortunately, the shot only goes down about 45 out of those 100 times. This was one of the bad 55.

  • GUESSWHO

Honestly it doesn’t matter that manu wasn’t playing. The Spurs missed 11 free throws. Seeing that the spurs attempted 47 is odd enough but the fact that they only made 36 shows that they deserved this loss. Lets just hope that with Manu who will most likely be back wednesday can get past the Grizzlies. All I know is that the Spurs won’t win missing 11 free throws. and what the heck I know we weren’t expecting Splitter to play like 40 minutes but still what the heck???? Even if we had put him on Randolph for like 6 minutes it would have been better then what Z bo did to Blair and Bonner all night. I mean seriously, it was becoming EXTREMELY APPARENT that Z Bo was murdering us yet Pop wouldn’t put Splitter in their to guard him for even 5 minutes.

  • tradeTP…after 2 more rings

get used to it. We signed him, were going to play him… DUMB

  • marrocas

This Grizz team is for real. Duncan obviously needs help inside. He has to help too much and he should focus on shutting down Gasol. Bonner and Blair are good role players but one lacks athleticism and the other lacks size. Dice did not look good today against Randolph. I hope it was just a bad game for him and not father time ringing a bell. The usual question: why did the best player in the second best league in the world, a 7 feet seasoned veteran with championship experience, who has already proven that he can handle NBA bigs defensively and who is at least as good offensively as Blair did not play? Man, I used to admire Popovich for his no-nonsense approach during playoffs but… is it really that hard to see that we are not going anywhere in these playoffs if Splitter does not help Duncan control the paint? I hope old Pop proves me wrong. I honestly was cheering for the “B boys” today but Randolph is too much for them defensively.

  • td4life

And so Matt Bonner CONTINUES to be your #2 big man…

I know that the silver and black were missing their best player, and there are dozens of legitimate ways to analyze this loss, but size still gets it done in the NBA, just ask the Memphis Grizzlies what this 4th quarter blocked shot and those 4th quarter rebounds will get you in the playoffs, not to mention the layups.

I would like to see Marc Gasol foul out of the next game, wouldn’t that be nice, or at least see McD stay out of trouble.

Also, for those of you who called some of us crazy for saying TP is worth trading, I never said Hill was the new PG, so let me say it once again. Manu is the PG that this team lives and dies with. Parker is usually a heck of an asset, no doubt, but I’d still rather have Tyson Chandler. Speedy recovery, Obi-Wan, speedy recovery!

I don’t think this is as huge as people think it is. We are a veteran team with plenty of experience and I’m confident we will bounce back. We were the number one team in the West the entire season, and we were playing without our (arguably) best player and definately our best closer and yet we still had a chance to tie the game with a wide open three as time expired, it’s not as if we lost to the Hornets by 9…. Besides If you remember back in 2003 we were the number one seed and lost to Phoenix on a Stephon Marbury 3 pointer at the buzzer in the first game of that series. They were a bad match up for us in the regular season that year and we still won the series in 6 games after losing game 1. I’m not pushing the panic button.. yet.

This game come down to a few IMPORTANT failures……

1.) TP is a HORRIBLE play-maker - His shot isn’t falling and he only come up with 5 assists…… This is why trading him makes since….. how does he make others better, by not passing to them when he is ice cold……..And he can’t play defense either…….Mike Conley 15pts 10ast = nuff said
TP is too 1 dimensional player to nit be able to score 25+ a night like other scorers in the NBA……

2.) POP not coaching - TD was 6-10 in the 2st half, and 2-3 in the 2nd…..Yes 3 shot attempts in 24 min w/o Manu, w/o TP playing well, and POP STILL DOESN’T call TD’s number…….. and Yes he should have also played Splitter/Blair to see what an ALL HUSTLE front line can do…….

3.) Someone on this team has to play perimeter Defense……. It’s hard enough on our post fighting off those behemoths, but now you got the smalls getting to the bucket…… can’t allow a team to have everything going at once, and we just did

4.) POP CAN’T play TP, Neal, Hill, Bonner, Blair, at the same time…… or really 4 out of the 5 at the same time……. It’s just asking Memphis to post up our smaller and less athletic guards….. I know POP thinks that BBIQ beats athleticism…… but not by that much…… Battier can post up any of those guards and score with ease……

5.) Bonner must never be allowed to check Gasol…… it makes the entire team look to help him to the point where they leave there men WIDE OPEN…….You would think that this would be an easy one to stick with..not for the 2011 Spurs…….Also Bonner has to stop with all the INSANE shot selection……. He only shoots when he is WIDE OPEN, and in the playoffs, you are very seldom that wide open….. just take a few like Neal to see what happens, you never know you might actually catch on fire and have a game like Miami…….

Well that’s what I saw, what about you guys/gals

  • Kenan

Great article. Your writing outperforms most beat writers and national columnists. The new look of the site is an upgrade as well.

Now we just need the spurs to upgrade their defense. No more 100 point games. Manu being back will create more opportunities as well for the shooters. Not time to panic.

  • Bob

I agree Tiago couldn’t have done any worse on Gasol than Tim did and it would have allowed Tim to play Randolph. Blair or Bonner can’t guard these guys one on one. It forces the Spurs to use more help defense. It’s always better if you can guard a guy with a single defender. The problem is the game was close so Pop is just going to think they needed to hit a few more shots and they would have won. That ignores the fact that the Randolph and Gasol shot 18/25. It’s not like they were making tons of jumpers. They were getting easy baskets. Even if the Spurs had hit a few more shots they’re definitely making the game harder than it needs to be.

  • Blofeld

    FREE TIAGO!!!!

  • Xicano47

Memphis has ONE, and ONLY ONE advantage over us and that’s in the post. So what does Pop do: keeps out our second 7 footer. Pop is a fucking idiot and sadly no reporter will call him out. It’s pathetic. All any one will talk about will be the two threes Bonner hit at the end and forget about the 20 - 30 points he gave up with his worthless defense (defense and Matt Bonner .. an oxymoron). Blair is worthless too. All that energy is meaningless for 90 percent of the game, but again, Pop only points out the one or two “hustle” plays he makes a game, as if that offsets his uselessness on the defensive end and his innumerable turnovers and moronic plays.

  • TD = Best EVER

ALL of you Tiago people kill me…..DO you not remember Darrell Arthur from Memphis scoring like 8 straight points against your defensive GOD……. Tiago is too small for Gasol if Gasol is playing as well as he was today, and isn’t nearly good enough to stop Randolph…… Better than Bonner…SURE….. better than Blair….barely and he wouldn’t rebound as well, so it’s not the Automatic upgrade you all make it out to be………..

  • Titletown99030507d

But TD wouldnt a few minutes for Tiago help in regards to throwing his body on someone maybe drawing a few fouls even though he might make 40% just to get them in the penalty sooner, get some rebounds and even get a few buckets in. 10 minutes would be good for him. Just asking for a little time to give Bonner or Blair some help while Timmy and Dyess sit? I’m not bashing on Blair and we all know this playoffs Splitter ain’t getting any real time even though he should, but if Blair finishes strong on his lay ups he’ll catapult his status to another level which is good thing. It’s just a matter of tweaking. Not asking for Splitter to play Blair minutes but for these playoffs to get a chance like you said.

  • TD = Best EVER

Yes I think Splitter should play 10-15 minutes…….. especially if he is playing well……. But POP is being an A-hole right now and doesn’t want to micromanage the team as he once did……… Starting with never reeling in Parker, his Obsession with Bonner(I still think Bonner wife has to be related to POP’s wife somehow) and now his refusal to play Splitter and even Green(I hate the 6-4 and under 3 guard lineup he plays…… it’s just asking to be taken advantage of…….) So yes POP has a lot of adjustments to make, because even if we do get passed Memphis, and I think that we will, we are still not looking good/favorites to win a title……

  • Titletown99030507d

You got that right. What do we have to lose in getting Splitter on the floor for 10 minutes out of the entire game. It can’t be any worse now at least for this series.

  • Titletown99030507d

#2 - Agree. At least 10 minutes of Splitter/Blair would be better than 10 minutes of Bonner /Blair. They can put Bonner in with Timmy if he’s making his shots. Bonner did go to the line and he did make some needed 3′s in the last moments but if he can do that with Timmy then he can be on the floor, and allow Blair to play with Splitter some. It would give Timmy and Dyess time to rest.

  • Titletown99030507d

What are you talking about? Splitter/Blair would fair way better than Bonner/Blair for rebounding and defending paint. So all your saying in your post is Bonner is better than Splitter because Bonner played a shit load of minutes. Splitter can easily equal Bonner’s or Blair’s offensive production. Just give him the minutes. Oh hell no. Now your delirious. Splitter would draw more fouls and go to the line more than Bonner or Blair. If anything to get the other team in the penalty sooner and allowing our offensive guys to go to the rim with confidence. He changes the game somewhat whether people like it or not.

  • Titletown99030507d

    Well said.

  • Titletown99030507d

Maybe we should just give Splitter to Memphis since they gave up Pau Gasol to the Lakers. Then we would get Karma later for doing a good thing just as Memphis is getting theirs now. Then we would be facing Gasol, Splitter, and Z-BO.

  • Titletown99030507d

Forgot to say, The reporters are a bunch of p***ies. And always will be. Does Popovich pay these guys?

  • Jimbo

Bonner was getting absolutely prison-raped by the Grizzlies’ frontcourt, especially in the fourth. He is incredibly weak when it comes to rebounding in traffic. I love McDyess, but I don’t think he or anyone else on the team can stop Randolph. Hopefully we can just limit the others.

I’d like to see Splitter get some time against Gasol and put Duncan on Randolph for stretches, but Pop like a lot of coaches doesn’t like to play rookies.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. The Grizzlies, even without Gay, are a handful for anyone. I think the Spurs will win in 6, but nothing will surprise me. Still can’t believe the road the Spurs drew- Grizzlies, OKC/Denver, LA, East champ. Ugh.

  • Titletown99030507d

“We were best when were attacking quickly and not letting them set up their defense,” Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich said. “There were periods in the game where we didn’t do that, we slowed up a bit too much.
“We’d like to keep the pace up a little better.”

And then they petered out! Coach.

  • Junierizzle

It’s so easy to blame BONNER. Geez we get he can’t defend. But he was nearly the hero. Grizz played great and bottom line. For all of the thing BONNER gave up The SPURS were up by 4 with about 1 minute left without MANU at home. You have to close it out.

Me: Just don’t give up a three. Just don’t give up a three. Just don’t ………………………………………….

    Obviously MANU was the difference.
The Grizz have yet to beat the SPURS while they have all of the Big 3.

  • Junierizzle

How about blaming TP for missing all of those lay-ups. Or GHill for not having an impact like we thought he would. Or Mcdeezy for having a bad game overall. Or Gary Neal for having a couple of empty possessions. Or TD not getting the Ball enough in the Second half.
POP can only make the calls he can’t play out there. And yes I too think he should play SPlitter but even with all his crazy coaching The SPURS were still in a position to win.

Just wait for MANU to play.

  • DorieStreet

Spurs perimeter play was very subpar. Besides the poor shooting, they didn’t work hard/quick enough to get better shots-only 13 assists. Then they let the Grizzlies turn their weakness - 3pt shooting - into a strength, andMemphis took it away from the Spurs.
The guards need to cut back on the help defense, espically Hill when he guards Mayo. Unless the he has a chance at a steal/strip on a Grizz big & can do it quickly-stop cheating down and getting burned by an open jump shot.

Wow, your supposed to support your team, not bash it. We need to rally behind our team when theyre down, not throw dirt on them. I am a true fan, and I believe in our team and the system that got us this far. Bonner sparks our team and fires us up even if he stuggles with defense, its a risk you take. How you could put down Blair is beyond me, the guy is an insane athlete, and if you watched each game this season you would know that he is a strong, sure handed, beast on the glass. And you would know he has incredible finesse around the basket, which is astonishing for a man of his size. Support the Spurs, because this is when they need it most!

  • mws

In part I blame the crowd. Maybe it was the early start or the fact that Spurs fans have been spoiled by great finals games and championships, making it hard to get excited about Game 1 of Round 1 but the AT&T center was dead. I had the pleasure of watching every playoff game this weekend and the Spurs crowd was by far the worst. Chicago’s crowd didn’t let the early start hurt them as they cheered their team on to a late comeback win and there was way more passion displayed in Memphis by the 50 fans watching on TV at the Grizzlies’ arena. With Manu out and the inability to stop Memphis’ bigs the Spurs lost game 1, with an apathetic crowd and no playoff atmosphere the Spurs lost what their great season earned them - home court advantage. Hope Spurs fans bring the noise in game 2

  • Jwashin3

I got nuthin new to add. I thought the Spurs were stagnant on offense through a couple of stretches during the game that kept the Grizzlies, but like many others, I was dumbfounded to see Tiago Splitter get NO minutes. He is precisely the kind of big, 7foot body needed to provide better interior defense. We could not get stops against Randolph and Gasol; Gasol will probably never again shoot this well in a playoff game, but Dice and Blair are too small against the height and size of the Grizzlies. I’m not panicking. I just hate when the Spurs lose winnable games, especially i the playoffs.

  • http://regularfan.blogspot.com/ Humberto

Memphis did a great job of slowing down the Spurs today. I really hope Parker and Ginobili make the difference for us in game 2.

  • Hobson13

I agree. This loss wasn’t because of one player. We missed 3 wide open shots at the end of the game and left 11 points on the table at the FT line. I could go on, but this was a teamwide loss.

  • Hobson13

I still think we have this series in 6 games max. The Grizz frontline (their only strength) can’t play any better than what they did today. No way in hell Gasol makes 90% of his FG attempts and goes for 24 and 9 ever again in this series. I was really encouraged by how mediocre their perimeter scoring was. Outside of Conley (maybe) they don’t have anyone who can break down the Spurs defense from the perimeter. IMO, here’s what the Spurs need.

    1. Manu
    2. At least give Splitter a shot at Gasol/Randolph. God d*mn! This refusal to play another 7fter is getting old.
    3. Make open shots (Spurs missed a lot of gimmies)
    4. Perimeter guys don’t cheat in order to help out on Randolph. Z-Bo by himself can’t come close in winning this series.
    5. Get back to the drive and kick game that made the Spurs so unstoppable (#1 will greatly help this)
    6. Parker, Blair, Hill…make the layups! Tony missed several and-1′s and Blair chucked a couple of bunnies off the backboard too.

I think we got this series and it is comforting to know that the Lakers also lost today and the Celtics only won by 2 against the Knicks. In fact, the Lakers game wasn’t nearly as close as ours and we played a much better opponent. CP3 just blew the Lakers up. He’ll be a handful for the Lake show.

  • Junierizzle

That’s right. I forgot about the 11 missed FT. They shot so many they started to miss them.

  • Bruno

Are u kidding me??Without Bonner, this game would be over in 3rd quarter and the scrubs playing the 4th.

  • KG

I thought the biggest blunder of the night was when we were down by 1 with around a minute to play we ran a play for a 3 pointer instead of just getting an easier (hopefully) 2 pointer or foul.

I can’t believe the way some fans are throwing our players under the bus. He has one bad game and you say that’s why he’s tradeable. Your wee bumboy Blair, and the rest of the team, wouldn’t be getting any easy buckets without Parker, or Manu, creating them, so just lay off the criticism. I think we won’t see Tony play this bad for the rest of the postseason.
We won two games in the regular season, without Splitter, against this team so I think we can beat them. Not saying I wouldn’t like to see him, just saying that we can do it without him. I would have rather kept George in his 6th man role, it gives him consistency in his role.

  • Ryan

To all you Splitter people out there…. read this… remember it, write it down, put a star by it, and underline it….
    Splitter can’t shoot free throws.

Don’t get me wrong… I love the guy just as much as all of you do… but I can tell you right now, if Memphis’ only defense to stop our ball movement for 3′s is to foul, then Splitter is a guy you DO NOT want on the floor. Can he rebound? Yes. Can he defend? Yes. Can he score? Yes. But if all their gonna do is foul him whenever he gets it low enough.. we might as well be playing 4 on 5 offensively.

We showed today we can outrebound these guys and attack the paint at will with our guards. (Manu being back on Wed should make this even more apparent). But playing Tiago is not the answer… it’s moreso Blair needs to stop picking up dumb fouls.. it also that guys like Hill and RJ need to knock down shots when the oppurtunity presents itself.

Still pissed at George though…. why do you go for a steal and leave their best transition 3 shooter open on the wing? C’mon man… use your head. And then you get a chance to fix it all and you brick a 3 from your sweetspot in the corner. People don’t wanna step up… and it’s gonna cost us.

  • TD = Best EVER

unfortunately i have been asking to have TP traded for years now……. 6.6 assists per game is a Career high and you all love him for it……. Yet he get exploited by almost every other PG in the NBA this season……..He can’t guard any PG in this league…… and because of it what ever he gives the team he can easily take away……. Of our 3 stars he is easily the most 1 way player…. ALL points…… This team would have been better off trading him in the off season to NY Knicks for Chandler and Douglas…… Or to the Kings for Thier High draft pick and a young PG…… Hell even Indiana/Atlanta and many other teams wanted a PG and had a you PG as well as a high pick to trade…….I would have jumped all over it, Douglas, Collinson, hell even Teague can give you close to what TP is giving you and we would have had a young Prospect like Monroe, Chandler or someone of the sort on our hands as well….. That way we wouldn’t have had to re-up on RJ………

  • Bruno

    Parker let Batier wide open.
About Splitter, this thing of FT shooting would prejudice Spurs is one the biggest myth.
Bonner give up 15-25 points per game, no one can do worse. This is the biggest problem, Bonner is our 2th Big in Pop’s mind

  • Bruno

Agree we should trade TP. If i was the owner, i would have changed TP, for CP3/Deron or even a 35 year old Nash

  • Dr. Who

    @TD=BE

Parker struggled with his shot so he took it to the cup. Good job adjusting but he didn’t make his shots for an and 1. I’ve been watching a lot of Grizz games leading up to the playoffs. I don’t think many outside of Barkley are giving the Grizz much credit aside from their big men. Conley and Allen can play some crazy mad D. Beforethe game started, I told my pals TP is going to have his hIs hands full. Why? Conley and Allen shut CP3 down and held him SCORELESS almost a week ago, it wasn’t as much of TP just playing bad but the Grizz can shut down elite PG. The Spurs have more weapons than the Hornets. Lets hope Pop adjusts.

Bonner is easy to pick on. Kudos to the Rocket for finally hitting his shots in the playoffsnwhen it mattered. Gotta give him his props there. He is probably our single worst defender though. He was set out to guard their “go to guy” ZBo in crunch time. We know Bonner is a horrible defender. Even Bonner knows that. Putting Bonner out to dry and forcing help defense is on the coaches not bonner. He played as well as u can expect Bonner to play. The coaches gave him too crucial a role to play. I have to believe even with bad free throw shooting Tiago should have got at least a handful of minutes to try and draw a charge and gve some of our bigs a rest. Will the real McDyess please show up Wed. We need him in a bad way!

  • MSteele

Are you guys f*cking kidding me???? Like really???? Douglas/ Collison/ Teague. Thats f*cking unbelievable, if you think that any of those players could give you what Tony gives then you are an imbecile. Fair enough Tony’s a not a great defender but he is miles ahead of all three on offense and combined with Munroe, Chandler or whoever you added in, you aren’t getting good value on the trade.
By the way if you knew anything about basketball you’d know defending a PG is a team effort. Defending means that it’s up to the ‘Big’ to rotate and give help so the defending guard can get back but as you all know our PnR defense has been horrible, mainly due to the ‘Big’ in my opinion.
Another thing if you knew anything about Spurs basketball you’d know that Manu handles the ball 30-40% of the time on offense. Hence the 4.9 ass/game. Add that to Tony’s 6.6 and our starting backcourt averages 11.5 ass/game.

    Boston’s starting backcourt = 13.9 ass/game
    Oklahoma = 9.6
    Phoenix = 12.7
    New Orleans = 9.8
    Chicago = 8.9

My point from all this is that none of the other ‘elite’ point guards play with a two guard that handles the ball as much as Manu. How can Tony get assists if he doesn’t handle the ball??

Don’t worry though I’ll allow you lot to take it back after Wednesday when he crushes Conley and we get the win.

  • Bob

It seems like Pop doesn’t believe in defense any more. Every comment he gives is that they need to hit more shots. Probably explains why he doesn’t play Splitter who has shown the ability to help the defense. I thought he was coming around when he played Splitter against the Suns a couple of weeks ago. If you can win with offense or defense it’s always better to choose defense. Seems Pop chooses offense now. The Spurs don’t need any more 3pt shooters. They need better defenders.

  • Hassan

    @ TD=best ever

I do agree TP played bad today but our system doesn’t give TP enough assists(highest assist team in NBA) but in basketball there is no hockey assisst & in our system it is usually the pass after that leads(ball movement) to the goal…even manu, hill & RJ have about 3-5 assists/game too as the ball moves on the perimeter al lot after TP penetrates which he didn’t do well at all today so we had assist lows today….

Man..POP is amazing though…he just refuses to play splitter even 8-12 mins which would have helped…so why pay him 3 million per year; instead we should have gone after Jermaine O’neal, Kurt Thomas or something…. POP I beg you play Tiago some to see what he can do against Gassol so Timmy can play Randolp….

Also RJ only gets 6 FGA only in a game Manu is absent…that’s just crazy…

Blair got blocked like 3 times if I remember correctly..

Hill struggled to elevate his game with manu missing..his numbers today are good for off the bench hill not starting SG number….

Bonner 24 mins & only 3 rebounds + only 4 FGA but dominated by Randolph so if he plays this much he should at least be set up for 6-7 3-point attempts so he can make at least 3-4 of them and balance out… I guess he will play as POP supposedly loves his ability to space the floor for TP who was atrocious today & should be upset at himself esp in manu’s abscence….

And finnaly and most important..with the way Duncan played today and TP didn’t play much…HOW can Duncan not get any FGA in the last 20 mins of the game(from 9 mins left in 3rd quarter)…Just un-acceptable…Totally.

    Go Spurs Go…

  • TD = Best EVER

I know PnR D is up to the Team to stop, but TP gets beat 1v1 alot as well as on the break……For a man as fast as he is with the ball, he gets blown by way too easy…….

    Also a little list:

OKC might not have Manu - but KD runs a lot of Isolation plays…. No Assist there
NY/Denver - Raymond Felton - 1st ISO’s w/Amare and the rest of the Knicks = 0 assists and now a back up with Denver
    LBJ - he gets 7 I think… and Wade handles the ball a ton…..
Houston - Kyle Lowry - Plays with Martin/Scola - between the post ups, and ISO’s here he should struggle more……
Jru Holiday - AI gets a ton of assists……and Jru still gets his…….

Point is that Even with Manu, TP with our new offense has the chance to really control the game like he never has before and his numbers have not followed…….He has actually has better years in the past…… And when you combine that plus there are a TON of PG’s that can run pick and roll offense…… basically 80% of PG’s in the league….. he is easily replaceable, and the $ saved would have allowed us to dump RJ and not resign him after he was up……We would be younger, more athletic, and had more flexibility over the next 2-3 years…….And even if we lost some offensively, we have enough Offense…… we would gain it back with the ability to control penetration a little better and been better suited for a title run……

  • Colin Rigney

    Some points from Game 1:

-In light of some “free Splitter” posts: Splitter would have gotten his ass kicked too by Gasol and Randolph.

-If Splitter sees the court he had better have TD with him on it, otherwise its a bad coaching move.

-I don’t see Gasol playing that well through the series. Randolph will.

-Parker and Hill need to hit shots.

-Ginobili better come back like gangbusters and not turnover prone.

-TD needs to get the ball on the block MORE

-Spur team defense will have to get more creative and help create more turnovers

-Blair needs to finish the freaking ball-great game otherwise today though

    -Less Bonner please

  • Colin Rigney

McDyess played his near worst, if not the worst playoff game as a Spur. He needs to pick it up, hit his jumpers and fucking defend or else I would be willing to throw Splitter in there.

  • DorieStreet

Spurs’ crowd noise is like talk show laughter (or in old days-the laugh track) The announcer/recorded chants have to get the AT&T fans going; there’s no groundswell of cheering/shouting that is sponteneous or springs forth from a situation on the court. And any big shot by the opponent silences the stands like a muffler quickly wrapped around a person’s face. And it doesn’t have to be at end of a game either. A run of 2-3 baskets does it also. It has been that way for the last few seasons-not just during early playoff games.

  • http://twitter.com/ejwestksu Eric Westerman

It’s clearly an outlier from Gasol. Now, Memphis’ front line is going to beat our guys up for the entire series, but 90% FG and 2.5 points-per-shot will not be repeated.

  • http://twitter.com/ejwestksu Eric Westerman

Outside of Splitter (while a better defender than Bonner, Memphis’ front line is a touch match-up for him regardless) - there’s nobody else to throw at them. Dyess and Blair were in foul trouble almost from the get-go.

  • http://twitter.com/ejwestksu Eric Westerman

FT% was right at the team’s regular season average - can you really complain when they shoot at the rate that should be expected?

  • badger

I was thinking the same thing. As soon as we saw Blair pick up 3rd and 4th fouls, I thought Pop would finally call his number. Nope. I’m dumbfounded why Splitter cannot be put out there 8-12 minutes per game, even if only to mix it up and give a breather to Blair or TD.

  • badger

I don’t think Tiago would shut them down completely, but he’s big enough to keep Gasol honest, and he’s pretty good at drawing fouls and clogging the lane on D. Also, players are sometimes “feelin’ it”, and Tiago can pass, set screens, board, and maybe get you 10-12 points if he saw 20 minutes of court time. I say give the man an opportunity against a clearly larger team, like Memphis. Blair and Bonner just make them salivate.

  • Xicano47

Look, man, I don’t want to disrespect anyone, but please, are you for real? Do you think the reason people on this blog get so pissed when we lose is because we don’t support the team? Or do you think blind support no matter how fucked up Pop’s decision are or how bad someone plays constitutes being a “loyal fan?” It’s exactly because we support the Spurs that we get so worked up. What’s so damn hard to understand about that? When I was in Nam, the fucking brass always said the same thing: go out and shoot the gooks and don’t ask any questions. After 55,000 of my comrades in arms came back in body bags we found out it was all bullshit. Blind allegiance to authority is idiotic. Pop comes from that same military mentality … don’t question authority, in this case, his. Bullshit. Bonner and Blair may be useful against some teams but not against the Grizz. That’s obvious to everyone except apparently you and the SA press.

  • badger

Nobody believes Splitter ought to be on the floor at the end in a close game with his low FT%. However, he would likely get their bigs in foul trouble WAAAAAYYYYYYYY more quickly than Bonner/Blair. Those two are a joke for Gasol and Randolph to defend in the paint.

The point with Splitter is that he’s big enough, and his feet are quick enough, to slow them down, even if it was for 4-5 minutes at a stretch, 2-3 times per game. Tim would shut down Randolph if he could get his leaner frame away from Gasol. On my tv, Gasol’s bulky body looked huge next to Tim. Randolph, not so much.

  • marrocas

TD, do you remember Tiago shutting down Aldridge and Nene? He is not barely better than Blair, he is like 6 inches better with much more developed BBIQ. Come on! don’t you agree that Tiago has earned some playing time?, don’t you remember how he played when Duncan went down? Those are the recent memories we all have.

  • Melbourne Spur

Agree. Splitter shouldn’t see any time. He has played zero playoff minutes, and hasn’t shown enough throughout the year to scream “put me in coach, I’m ready”. People’s obsession with him on this site is insane. Don’t blame Pop for not putting him in as a reason Bonner played so much, blame Dys for getting in foul trouble. We need Dys to play defensive minutes, not Tiago.

Looking forward to game two. If they continue the trend of fouling so much, and Manu plays, look for him to go 13/15 from the line and put it out of reach.

  • Dr. Leonard McCoy

Alrighty Spurs fans, here’s Pop’s perscription for Wednesday’s game: MG 20-20. Although Gasol & Randolph were killing us on the inside; our shots were not falling; our free throws were bad; assists were down; ticky tac fouls from the strippy guys; we feel that T-Splitt would have provided better defense than Bonner or DB-45 & defense was lacking around the perimiter, yadda, yadda yadda, but I think that Pop’s final answer is Manu. I don’t really see Pop doing too many adjustments at all, & that’s including giving T-Splitt any minutes for this series (although that would be a pleasant surprise!). I can except for them to run more uptempo & try to penetrate to the paint to get the Grizz’s bigs into foul trouble. I think that in Pop’s mind, MG 20-20 will answer most of those issues from game one, although personally, this team should have easily won game one without him, but perhaps this will be a WAKE-UP CALL for this entire team to execute & play better. GO SPURS GO & GIT ONE 4 THA THUMB!!!

  • Junierizzle

And with the 11 made FTs they also win easily. PLenty of blame to go around.

  • Junierizzle

Oh yeah. It doesn’t matter who you put on Randolph, he is still gonna get the same numbers.

  • Titletown99030507defense

I agree you always want to go inside with Timmy on that situation not to mention it could garner an and 1.

  • Titletown99030507defense

I’d rather go inside to Timmy and either get a bucket, a bucket and an and1, or a foul instead of a 22 ft shot from the arc.

  • Titletown99030507defense

While your getting Tyson Chandler can I add Gerald Wallace to that list?

  • Titletown99030507defense

I’m not a cheerleader. I’m a realist. Marcus Haslip was an athlete look what happened to him.

  • Titletown99030507defense

Man I couldn’t have said it better. People need to wake up stop their allegiances to their favorite players when they are sucking and point out the failures so that they can learn from them and make the adjustments. Free Tiago! GSG!

  • Titletown99030507defense

Lay off the koolaid dude you are delirious and represent only 1% of that opinion. Take a poll brother and not just on this blog take it to the streets.

  • Titletown99030507defense

Get ready for another loss if Splitter is vacationing on the his cushion.

  • Titletown99030507defense

#2 - It got old a long time ago.
#6 - Leave Blair on the bench so he doesn’t miss any lay ups.

  • Titletown99030507defense

Wasn’t TP the one who iced the game in the Hornet playoff series when he used CP3? How soon do we forget.

  • Titletown99030507defense

Nice one. Yeah I’ll keep Tony as well.

  • Titletown99030507defense

The key here is the rotating big, Timmy can’t do everything and as it stands the rotations of the bigs aren’t helping out enough to give the much needed results. Good point MSteele.

  • mac

There seems to be a lot of agreement that trading TP is not such a bad idea afterall, and that Popovich’s stubbornness is costing the Duncan and Ginobili show a real chance at contention. And all that without one peep from the poster known as TradeTP.

I don’t know how you could have made a trade last summer that brings back Greg Monroe at #7 or higher, but it’s irrelevant now. The last 3 champions, heck, the last 12 champions, all had great big fellas. I have to agree that Popovich, for all his brilliance, just has it wrong. And hand-check rules notwithstanding, Blair and Bonner are NOT the way forward.

  • td4life

    oops… my bad

  • Titletown99030507defense

All valid points. And my guess I would think either Pop makes the adjustment and players will improve their play for the second game or else same result. But I still say we need to be up 6-8 points with a minute and a half left in the game based on this teams history lately.

  • Titletown99030507defense

Your right. I think those late 3′s by Bonner did good for his psyche and hopefully spill over to game 2. And again right on the money in regards to the role Bonner has. It’s just asking too much for a player like him accustomed to parking himself at the arc waiting for the opportune time to let her rip to go out an demand that kind of defense in the paint against guys like Gasol and Z-Bo. It’s not his fault it’s Pop’s fault for not accepting the reality of Bonner’s liabilities on defense. He’s good to throw in there to get a few 3′s in a 5 minute span and leave the banging to people like Splitter off the bench. Nothing wrong with that. Bonner will be good for us in that respect.

  • Titletown99030507defense

Put a star on this. I don’t care if he doesn’t make any of his free throws at least he can slow down the repetitive onslaught of Gasol/Z-BO combo by helping out the other big while Timmy sits or hell help Timmy out on the floor at the same time for that matter, not to mention the fouls he knows how to draw putting the other guys in the penalty. That is a major contribution alone. Add the strong finishes that he would bring around the rim instead of getting his shot blocked because his too short. Didn’t we see him do this time after time while Timmy was out. Wasn’t too long ago was it?

  • Titletown99030507defense

Blair gave up 13. 6 getting scored on and 7 sending Grizz players to the line that’s a total of 13.

  • Titletown99030507defense

That is fact. Good post now if only Pop would read your post. They should have one feature during the Spurs telecast instead of that stupid “ask Sean a question text”, they should get one post from a 48MOH thread and let Pop read it at halftime and let him comment on it. Varner is there any way you can swing that? You are getting big.

  • Titletown99030507defense

I choose defense over shooting more.

  • Tim Varner

    @Titletown,

I’m very far from big. I’d be happy if I arrive at the dignity of being small. And besides, I doubt Pop would go along. Nice thought, though.

@ Tittletown: Tittletown, do you have pointed ears & green blood, cause from a logical standpoint, you’re right!
Yea, when it does come to playing the game of basketball, defense deffinatly gets you the “W’s” & eventually championships my friend! To me, the way this current team has been built, it has been built from an offensive standpiont, it seems, by their having to adopt that euro-finese style of play. In the NBA, especially in the playoffs, all of that cream puff stuff has got ta go out the window cause it’s bangin’ time! Battles are won in the paint with defense, & a team would require for it to have at least one real good big man & at least one average big man (although the “gooder” the better with the latter!). Although TD-21 really looked good yesterday, he REALLY needs help! McDyess needs to step up & play better ball (or is his age showing now?); Bonner is going to a gunfight with a twig! I give him credit for his hussle & his willingness to give it all he has, at most of the times, but he’s just not athletic enough to keep up with those Memphis maulers! I believe that at least on a defensive standpoint, T-Splitt would be a better choice in the paint, since he’s bigger, a bit more quicker, & he’s way more defensive minded than Bonner is. DB-45, well, I give him a gold star for heart, but as we all know, he still needs to either develop his game some more, or just let him play his game… Idon’tno! Any who Tittletown, this team is pretty much what it is from what we see, & it’s up to how Pop & company to decide how this team will play… defensive; offensive, or both. I would love to see him make adjustments to better match up, especially from a defensive standpoint, & I believe that Splitter would be a far better upgrade than Bonner in that area. I also believe that a combo of players on the court would also prove to bring better results. We all know that the Blair/Bonner combo doesn’t work well, & perhaps a Splitter/Bonner, along with Manu on the floor could be a working combination, perhaps. Ok. Let me get out of the captian’s chair now & get back to sickbay were I belong…. Damnit Jim! I’m just an old country doctor who wants to see my Spurs win it all! Sorry Tittletown for the long post, but this is therapy, & this is just what the doctor orderd!

  • Bigballs

My, my - Ian Mahimi would sure look good as big body down low for the Spurs for 10 to 15 minutes per game, instead Spurs let a 22 yr. old, athletic, 7 footer just walk and Splitter is not ready to play at the elite level. Mavs got the kid for nothing after Spurs spent 3 development years on him. Mavs will sign him long term after his inital 2 year deal.

Bonner on Zach Randolf in the post — are you kidding? Duncan is old, plays old and is nothing more then a jump shooter now. Why not go after Pops Mensu Bonsu whom the Spurs had in camp last year. Young, athletic, fresh legs can jump and play defense. Best of all, he is cheap

  • rj

i’ll be upset if pop doesn’t go to tiago at some point this series or playoffs even. we can’t allow our team to tank because our lack of interior presence. he will need to gamble on him if we want to avoid getting abused on the inside. i can see pop going either way. taking a risk (although i don’t see it as a major one) and playing splitter, or tanking with bonner and blair.

    p.s.

not a fan of the new layout

  • rj

    @ ryan

blair isn’t such a hot freethrow shooter either. gasol and randolph don’t want to get into foul trouble

There was talk of The Kings giving us their pick and something else to get TP…..they need a PG and Tyreke Evans is more of a SG/D-Wadeish…. as in he gets too many TO;s trying to create for others……. The Kings had the 5th pick…..now this was a rumor….. No one really knows how true it was, but I know The Kings were looking for a PG and were willing to trade most of their team this year……So I’m sure a deal could have been struck if our FO was willing to pick up the damn phone…….

  • Colin Rigney

You obviously didn’t read the whole post! Where in my post did I say Bonner is better than Splitter? I said “less Bonner please” (see last bullett). Take more time and read the post and not react.

None of those guys hold a candle compared to what we have. All of those would be horrible trades.

  • Colin Rigney

Yes he was. Parker can fucking play! People all ready to dump the dude after one loss is crazy.

  • Colin Rigney

    Ha!

  • andy

honestly, for once i might agree with not playing splitter. where splitter seems to excel (you can’t say splitter hasn’t shown enough defensively, offensively he’s had more hiccups) is against mobile, agile bigs. gasol the lesser and z-bo are not of that mould.

however, i would like to see him get just a little burn to see if he can slow down z-bo. no one else on our team seems to be having any luck.

sorry, i didnt realize people enjoy badmouthing their players. i guess some people vent by taking it out online on their own team. personally i cant find my self doing that even when i am alone. Either way, splitter isnt the simple solution either theres obviously a reason that pop is so hesitant to play him. He’s the coach hes been to all the practices and knows whats best for the team. Its funny how you go back to Pop in your defense talking about your military experience when in your first post you think of him as a “fucking idiot.” Pop knows what hes doing, thats why our team has turned into a dynasty over these past years. A “fucking idiot” couldn’t bring the success that Pop has helped bring to this organization.
