Ian Mahinmi Injured

France took care of Germany yesterday in the opening round of Eurobasket.  France captured the 70-65 victory behind a late scoring flurry of Tony Parker, who scored 11 points in the games final few minutes.

Ian Mahinmi only played 4 minutes for Les Bleus, and this morning brings a possible explanation for his short minutes.  Ian Mahinmi apparently strained his hamstring while securing a rebound during yesterday’s game.

The severity of the injury is not known, but we’ll provide updates as they become available.

Update: We’ve spoken with Bouna Ndiaye, Ian Mahinmi’s agent, and can confirm that Mahinmi strained his hamstring during last night’s game against Germany. Mahinmi has undergone an MRI and both Les Bleus and the Spurs are awaiting the results. According to Ndiaye, Mahinmi’s injury is “nothing major,” and, although he will not play this evening against Latvia, hopefully he should be able to play again in a couple of days.

    Ah no, poor Mahinmi! At least it wasn’t one of his ankles again, that would be horrible. It doesn’t sound serious, but we’ll see.

    This is getting pretty ridiculous. Kid is gonna be outta the NBA before he has even started if he continues to be as fragile as he appears. Its too bad too, he has a lot of potential.

    I agree, this is getting ridiculous. This guy is only what? 22? And he’s had how many injuries? That’s a roster spot that could have gone to someone like a Mensah-Bonsu or someone else that can stay on the floor and be productive.

    Mahinmi was hit hard in midair and took a bad fall. Very little he could have done about it. The truth is I’m surprised that he’ll be playing so quickly after the tumble. But during today’s France telecast (victory, btw), it was reported that Mahinmi could be available for the next game. And, in his defense, the injury that kept him out last year was kind of freakish. I can see why everyone is so skittish, but I’m not sure this is not just a weird series of incidents more so than a commentary on Ian’s body. I’m still cautiously optimistic.

    Seriously, it’s a hamstring, not a season-ending ankle injury like the last 2 times. This one should be easy enough to recover from, and the Spurs haven’t even recalled him for more tests like they did with Tony. Ian is fine – let’s just hope it stays that way.

    I’m still optimistic about Ian, this latest injury doesn’t sound so serious…

    about his ankle issues, he wasted last year mainly because several MRI results don’t reveal any problems with his ankle.

    It was only with the exploratory procedure that help them find out that there is bone fragment in Ian’s ankle so it wasn’t completely his fault… I still believe he can contribute to the Spurs cause this upcoming season…

    No matter how minor or serious the injury, it is an injury; and this makes it two years in a row.

    ‘CAUTIOUSLY optimistic’ is about right..

    You can call it a “weird series of incidents”, but anyone who’s followed professional sports for a period of time knows that there are just some guys, for whatever reason(s) who find a way to get injured consistently, and after a while you get to the point where you realize that they can’t be relied on. Mahinmi is perilously close, at this point, to becoming one of those guys.

    As for this latest injury, because of his history, and the fact that he, and his agent realize what a big year this is for him, of course they’re going to downplay the severity of it. He’ll probably try to soldier on, but you have to wonder how effective he’ll be at the start of training camp, which begins on September 28th.

    I was cautiously optimistic about the Grant Hill era in Orlando too.

    It just seems like some guys get bit by the injury bug and can’t stay on the court. I hope Ian gets healthy because we could use an athletic shot blocker and rebounder.

    The fact that no two of Ian’s injuries were to the same body part is a good sign in my mind. Missing one game shouldn’t be the red flag, either. Let’s give this some time to play out and if he gets hurt again, THEN we turn on him!
