Buck Harvey: James Anderson’s agent requested a trade

by

This is not what you’d expect in the midst of an 11 game winning streak. According to Buck Harvey of the San Antonio Express-News, James Anderson’s agent told the Spurs front office this month that he’d like his client to be traded.

This is not a great development. The Spurs have built a deep perimeter rotation this season, thanks in part to the injuries to Manu Ginobili and the development of Danny Green. Unfortunately for Anderson, that improvement from Green has meant he’s the odd man out. So much so, in fact, that the Spurs declined to exercise their team option on James Anderson’s rookie contract.

Traditionally, the Spurs will comply with player requests to be traded or released. If you don’t want to be with the Spurs, they don’t want you to stick around. It’s perhaps one reason why the Spurs usually have very good team chemistry. Yet the Spurs still have a responsibility to try and bring back a fair package in return for Anderson. If they don’t find one that suits their needs, they should hang on to Anderson for the rest of the season.

James Anderson has a future in the NBA, unfortunately for Spurs fans it’s looking less and less likely that future is in San Antonio.

Not smart.  Makes him look like a malcontent on a winning team when he’s less than 6 months from free agency anyways.  He’s been better the last few weeks, but he had earned his spot at the end of the bench when given the opportunity for more PT earlier in the year.

Gotta think de Colo gets his spot next year?

  • http://48minutesofhell.com Andrew A. McNeill

Maybe, though I’m not totally sold on De Colo as an NBA player. Skill wise, yes. But I worry his foot speed isn’t good enough for the league.

    Bring on Ryan Richards baby!

  • Bankshot21

This sucks. I like Anderson, and I know he has more to offer than what is being asked of him. Unfortunately for him, his individual talents are superfluous in a system oriented offense. He may have 5 talents and is only being asked to utilize 1 or 2 of them. This is also a dilemma that RJ is in, but the difference is experience. I could see how JA would want to display his skills to better position himself for a lucrative career in this league. I wish him the best whether he is traded or not.

  • Hassanelsir

I would like to try and get anthony Randolph from Minnesota for JA…

  • http://twitter.com/ejwestksu Eric Westerman

Haven’t seen much of him outside of highlight reels (which are obviously biased towards highlights).  Obviously, he’s not Parker or even Manu.  But how does his quickness compare to Neal or Anderson?

  • Hassanelsir

or go after Kosta Kufous from Denver as the 5th big..

  • MannyPacquiao

Can we get a big with a combo trade of Blair for instance? Just wondering what can we get for him?

  • Hassanelsir

or maybe go after jeff foster or L. Amundson in Indiana…

  • http://www.facebook.com/HUSTLEHUSTLE210 Da Real Suppa

trade blair and anderson for micheal beasly

  • Tyler

    Uh no….

  • Tyler

I doubt Richards will be playing in the NBA anytime soon.

  • Jagreen32

seriously? do you see Enes Kanter from Utah lobbying for a trade?! He should be averaging 20+ minutes a game, yet he is playing almost half of that! Get out and dont let the door hit you on the way out…

  • Guest

Kanter is only on the first year of his rookie contract, while Anderson did not get his option picked for next year. By not picking his option, the Spurs basically told him that he was as good as gone. Anderson knows he won’t be with the Spurs next year, and he knows he won’t get playing time with the Spurs this year. No playing time means not showcasing his talents, means a hard time finding a job next year. So he would like to be traded sooner rather than later. The door has already hit him on the way out, even though I’m sure he would rather have spent the next years in San Antonio.

  • Jagreen32

i do see your point, but we drafted JA for a reason. So he hasnt gotten playing time (at all) but I believe he can be a regular contributor! but, from what you posted, i guess i would be asking for a trade as well.

  • Len

He’s young and impatient and obviously has been the odd man out under Pop.  It’s a shame really and every mediocre to bad game Green has makes me a lil bit nervous that the team is blowing it with James.

  • Deeds130

It was puzzling to me that the Spurs declined JA’s contract option. Wouldn’t they rather trade him? If they keep him this year, they UNABLE to trade him come summer, so it’s now or never. A rookie contract should have been easy to move. So, either they just really don’t believe in him it all, or they really, really believe in someone else. Are they clearing space with a specific target in mind? It seems to me that they are eyeing somebody in particular and will need every dollar to pay this person. Meanwhile, I have trouble fully believing in Green and Neal.

He’s making 1.7 mil a year doing almost nothing. Obviously, Green is a better defender and as good a shooter as Anderson. JA lacked confidence, made poor decisions with the ball in his hand, can’t dribble effectively, and has been injured all of last year. He’s a waste of space and money on the bench and he and his girlfriend can have fun bitching at some other organization for playing time. This is a ridiculous decision by JA but i’m sure R.C. will make the best of it.

  • Len

I actually have quite a bit of confidence in Neal and I think the Spurs do too.  I fully expect Neal to get a generous contract offer from RC.

  • Wtv212001

    Bring back George Hill!

  • JustinFL

Was his option declined or just not exercised?  I thought teams could still exercise team options in the off season.  If so, not exercising the team option could have been subtle motivation.  Either way, because of his request, he’s probably gone now.

  • Hobson13

IMO, this is a good development.  Perhaps this will spur (pun intended) the Front Office to take some action regarding the bolstering our front line that they refuse to take.  Let’s face it, when the Spurs didn’t pick up Anderson’s cheap option for next year, it was almost guaranteed he would not be a Spurs in 2013.  Besides, with KL, Green, Neal, and RJ manning the 2/3 positions (I’m excluding Manu), we don’t NEED Anderson.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  Let’s trade our strength (excess SG/SF’s) for another team’s strength (excess PFs).  For the second time, I propose we trade Anderson plus a second round pick to Minny for Anthony Randolph.  Randolph is in the exact same boat in the fact that he will see no playing time behind Love and Derrick Williams.  They also need a legit SG just like we need another big.

Besides, the only ‘real” risk for the Spurs is giving up a late second round pick (read another draft and stash Euro that hasn’t panned out in years) for a lottery pick guy who at least has the potential to be a good player.  It’s possible he is a total bust, but it’s also possible he gives us a very different skill set at the PF spot.

  • Len

The Spurs are generally very hesitant to give up any draft picks.  Yes, some have been used on Sergei Karaulov and Damir Markota but some have also turned into future HOF players.

The point is, why offer any picks?  Aren’t we talking about the Wolves and their mastermind David Kahn?  Don’t we have arguably the best GM in the NBA?  If RC throws in a box of Cubans and a free suite at the Hilton then Kahn will make that trade straight up. :)

  • Dannysw16

    that sounds good to me

  • Dannysw16

are u kidding me anthony andolph is a joke hes been in the league for a while now and cant get nothing done!

  • Dannysw16

thats a joke no we cant

  • Dannysw16

why cant we trade blair and anderson and a 2rd draft pick to LA for Pau Gasol lol i wish
gasol legit all star put up double doubles him and duncan down there talk about deep run in playoffs but out in confrence finals

  • JustinFL

You’re pretty much right.  Just mainly throwing the idea out there that Jackson is available.  We would have to offer Jefferson and Anderson to make it work and I don’t see the Bucks wanting Jefferson back.  Just doesn’t make sense.

  • Ladylala

in all honesty I think it has something to do with his girlfriend, because she’s always on twitter talker about she would rather be traded then deal with this BULLCRAP as if she’s the one with the contract….. Sad!

  • Len

    Yoko Anderson?

  • Kornbread

I believe he would be a restricted free-agent, so that gives the team some flexibility. They can see what he does for the rest of the year and match if he shows value. They can see who is available in the draft and make decisions based on that.

His agent just wants him to be playing because he’s doing it for a new contract and the agent gets a cut.

  • Ladylala

    James Anderson….

  • theghostofjh

I agree. In my view Anderson has more upside than Green. I would have given Anderson more playing time, and cut Green’s minutes down a bit. I would also give RJ less playing time to make some additional room.

  • theghostofjh

     Sounds dumb to me.

  • theghostofjh

Sure, but it’s hard to know what the true market value for Anderson is, having the injuries he’s had and getting buried deep on the Spurs bench. Also, the Pacers have Paul George and Danny Granger.

  • Tyler

Must read article on Grantland about the Spurs:

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7597748/tim-duncan-manu-ginobili-mortality-san-antonio-spurs

I’m sure it’ll get quite a response on this board. It touches many of the topics that are continually brought up game after game.

    To 48MoH – Hope it’s alright I linked to it here….

  • http://48minutesofhell.com Andrew A. McNeill

No problem, we encourage everyone to read it.

  • Grantos

Michael Beasly hasn’t met a shot he doesn’t like, and that’s not exactly something the spurs need right now.

  • The_kamikaze_caesar

Lady, I think you missed the pun.

  • The_kamikaze_caesar

     Joke.*

Interesting. I liked when the drafted Anderson. He hasn’t been getting minutes but unfortunately he didn’t do much when he was getting them and that adds to his problem. Wouldn’t you want to wait till free agency if you’re him because then you could not only go anywhere but even if he wanted to try and stay there’s no real guarantee Jefferson is back next year so there would be more minutes to go around. I’m sure he believes in himself and wants to play/start. I’d like to see what he could do in consistent minutes, but if you have to then trade him. Although I do have to admit part of my reasoning in being okay with a trade if needed is that I believe Da’Sean Butler can be a good player in the league and I really want him to get his shot. Also thinking of the future besides Leonard, would Hanga be a possible guy they could fill that bench spot with? I say that ignorantly as I don’t even know beyond drafting him how that works if they signed him/own his rights. Plus I know he’s like 6’6” but I can’t remember if played more 2 than 3.

  • Ladylala

do you even know what youre talking or reading about….? This article is about James Anderson…. His girlfriend talks alot of smack on twitter about him not getting playing time. She’s even mentioned him being traded before! i know because im friends with her on twitter…. Somebody on twitter even asked if she had something to do with it…. Learn your facts!!

  • Titletown99030507d

Big mistake if they let this get away regardless of who’s playing in the rotation right now. This guy is a great player waiting to happen and happen so when Ginobilli is gone. This is not good.

  • Titletown99030507d

De Colo is not near the athlete and player Anderson is. Besides he won’t come here if at all for another 2 years.

  • Titletown99030507d

    Can’t defend and is slow.

  • Titletown99030507d

He’s another mysterious case. Leaving his swiss team for personal reasons. I was high on this guy but he is up in the air as well. Fantastic big who can shoot the 3, perimeter, great ball handler but not ready for prime time in regards to defense.

  • Titletown99030507d

They should trade him and Splitter to the Lakers for a big then I’ll have two favorite teams.

  • Titletown99030507d

I said that last season but everyone said who? Good rebounder and offensive player and can block shots with the best of them. Kinda like Splitter but with an outside shot. Karl won’t let him go.

  • Hobson13

Over the course of the last 3 years, Randolph has shown glimpses of being productive.  The problem is that Minny essentially has 4 PFs on the team and AR will not get playing time behind KLove and Derrick Williams.  Even though Williams is only a rookie, Minny didn’t make him the 2nd pick in last years draft to play 3rd string PF.

Again, we can either let our 20th pick in the 2010 draft walk for nothing at the end of the year or we can look to get at least some value back.
