Keith Bogans and the Richard Jefferson Injury
The recent injury to Richard Jefferson’s right thumb has nothing to do with the Spurs’ signing of Keith Bogans. Some Spurs fans have wondered if the late addition of Bogans is suggestive of a more troublesome injury to Jefferson’s thumb than previously reported.
I checked with the Spurs. This is not the case. According to a team spokesman, Richard Jefferson is fine. The first day of practice is next Tuesday, and Jefferson could be available then. If not, he’ll miss no more than a day or two of camp.
The Keith Bogans signing was couched in terms of an opportunity to add a solid player to the roster. Nothing more. The Spurs could announce their official training camp roster as early as tomorrow, and it will include all of the assumed names. What are we to make of the abundance of talent the Spurs are taking into camp? Just that-it’s a lot of talent.
The Spurs expect training camp to be highly competitive this year. No one is coy about the roster: it’s stacked. But that talent brings a long list of questions. It’s down to the coaching staff to find the right answers.

Tim,
I believe that Bogans is a nice addition although it might hurt Hairston or Williams to make the roster.
Most of the players that will not make it will join the Toros I presume, but with that talent, some teams might sign a couple of them if they are with the Toros… Do the Spurs have some control on this?
Thanks…

Robby, Here is how I understand it:
With Malik Hairston and Marcus Williams currently under contract, if/when they are released, they will be immediately eligible to sign with another NBA team.
However, the Spurs still hold the rights to Gist and McClinton since they were drafted, but never placed under a formal NBA contract. This means the Spurs can “stash” them in Europe or Austin to monitor their development if they are not ready to play for the big-league team, without fear of another NBA team swooping in and taking them away.
Tim V. could probably tell you whether that’s correct, but that is how I understand it.

Tim C,
Thanks for the info… I that’s what I know about Gist and McClinton. However, I’m a little worried if we could loose either Williams or Hairston. Those 2 in my opinion can definitely play and contribute to an an NBA team right now.

Guys,
Not quite right guys. If the Spurs waive Gist or McClinton they lose their rights altogether. They become free agents. However…if they decide to play in the D-League, the Toros would have first dibs. But the Spurs would have zero protection on said players if another NBA team decided to call the up. That’s the short version.

Tim,
That’s a little bit of bad news… we can’t have them all…that’s the thing.. We gain some and loose some.
hope these guys will be patience and give it one more year with the Toros. But Gist might go somewhere, he has been with the Spurs program a little too long not to break in to the rotation.
But if we can at least keep Hairston and Williams I’d be happy. Both would be great!

this will hopefully make the toros spurs-hopefuls fight harder to make the roster. competition between players trying to make the roster has its obvious benefits. gist and mcclinton are longshots anyways.

All this talk about training camp has me wondering about Austin Nichols again. Did any NBA team end up picking him up?

By the way, I just realized we have a good number of former Bucks (Haislip, Bogans, Jefferson), not that they spent any meaningful time together.

hey tim,
thanks for ans. all our crazy ques. youre the man!
is there any way you can get info as traning camp begins, to update us on who’s looking good and who’s not?

@zack: I know you’re asking Tim, but since I need to take a break from studying, I’ll say that although I don’t know when training camp begins, it has to be pretty soon, because the first pre-season game is on Oct. 6th, which leaves them with less than 2 weeks now. I’m guessing that it might just be for a week. That makes it the 29th? If so, that must be a pretty intense week.

@GMT
Austin Nichols signed a contract with Orléans (a french club) one month ago.
