Marcus Haislip and Malik Hairston
The Spurs put ink to paper a few hours ago. They’ve officially signed Marcus Haislip and Malik Hairston.
Haislip was expected. Hairston is a little bit of a surprise. I’ve written early and often about Hairston, boring you with his name since the beginning of last season. The odd thing about the signing is its timing. It’s early. Summer league hasn’t even begun. But I suppose the Spurs wanted to lock Hairston up before other teams saw him in summer league. He must have looked good during offseason workouts.
The Spurs never disclose contract details, and this time is no different. But the smart money says that Hairston’s deal is partially guaranteed, enough to keep him from the siren calls of another team’s camp.
Also, San Antonio did not announce the signing of James Gist today. May not mean anything, but it’s a notable silence. With both Malik Hairston and Marcus Williams inked to deals, the Spurs now have three small forwards on roster, not counting Mike Finley. Ime Udoka, take note. The Spurs could well enter the season with a small forward depth chart of Richard Jefferson, Malik Hairston and Marcus Williams. I’m taking the optimistic high road and saying the Spurs see Williams and/or Hairston as ready for the rotation. But we’ll see. The youth movement is underway.
A final note in passing: The Spurs bench boasts three players who have been mainstays for the Austin Toros. Some of our readers have asked-reasonably, I might add-where they might find fruit from the Austin project. I submit that that fruit is on its way, all bowed and pretty in a big bushel.

It was only a matter of time for the Toros connection to pay off. I think we should have kept Hairston longer last season, especially in hindsight, but things will end up the same with him, more or less. I’m still anxious to see Mahinmi get some real time for us, and I’ve even gotten my dad excited about him. As for Gist, I was hoping to see him on the roster, but his chances are looking really slim now.

Antonio Mc-Mc-Mc-Dyess!!!!
I’m really happy that previous draft picks are being trusted with a contract and brought onto the team.

Isn’t Williams injured?

I am not convinced that the Spurs are sold on Williams yet. I think he must impress in the preseason or his time in the Spurs system is over.

What about the Gist rumor where he said he was going to be with the Spurs next year? Had he spoken too soon. Did he kill his chances? Is a Bonner trade on the way?
I’m left scratching my head as far as what we can realistically expect to get back in a trade for Bonner/Finley. The idea scenario would be to not have to take a big contract back. It would be great to get a single player on an affordable rookie contract but of course the numbers wouldn’t match. We’d probably end up getting some sort of underachieving overpaid player back.
Curious what the final move may be for the offseason.

Will,
Nearly recovered. He’ll be ready for camp, but will miss summer league.

Hollywood,
I’m wondering about that myself. He wasn’t signed today…
As you read, the Spurs will need to clear a roster space for him. And he’ll play in Austin. No minutes available in San Antonio.

McDyess will make the Spurs look nice…

i hope Gists sticks with the team or austin, letting him go might not be such a good idea…

Hairston’s game has improved systematically since his poor 1st SL outing last year. He has gotten better game after game. When Pop gave him some minutes on the RRT last season he looked better than Udoka already. I’m glad they assuring no other team will try to steal him. His hard work commitment and dedication seem to start paying off for him and I’m glad the FO rewarded him for that.

I’ve been waiting to unveil this for years now. It feels like the right time.
McDyess signs a contract with a major athletic shoe company, and they come out with the McDyess V1.0. And in the commercial, he holds the shoe, smiles (a coy smile) and the camera, and says, “You can’t spell McDyess with out yess.” And you have to hold out the ssssss there at the end or it doesn’t work.
