Other People: LatinD, Jeff McDonald

Over at Pounding the Rock LatinD has written a couple can’t-miss posts in a series called The Wonder Years-a team history, chocked full of fun images and wonderful subheads. Point your browser in that direction to learn about an earlier version of Manu Ginobili, James Silas, or George Gervin’s Sunsesque philosophy.

Elsewhere, Jeff McDonald asked all the right questions at tonight’s DeJuan Blair press conference. The answers: Marcus Williams is not participating in summer league because of a wrist injury and the Spurs’ initial free agent targets are Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess, Brandon Bass and the much-coveted Marcin Gortat. Meanwhile, Chris Broussard tells us that Trevor Ariza is on his way out of Lakerland. That means Odom stays, no doubt.

  • Of all the front court players the spurs can get they should be going after gortat. He is the physical big we need so that duncan does not have to guard the centers in the west not to mention dwight and shaq. The spurs have ian to guard the athletic fours. When bynum and gasol play duncan and gortat match up well and when gasol and odom play ian and duncan would match up well.

  • The Finley card is priceless Latin D (also Jacque Vaughn’s in part 1). It looks a little off center though, hehe, jk.

  • Ariza should be The Lakers priority. Trever Ariza could be Bruce Bowen 2.0, and if they let him go the Lakers will suffer. I would let Odom go and keep Ariza. But as a Spurs fan, I will be very happy to see Ariza leave the Lakers.

  • LatinD is the man. You gotta check out his posts. Stupid Lakers are going to let their 3rd best player go. I’m all for it.

  • And it’s all kobe’s fault! haha, great. Kobe could’ve extended his contract and signed for less in order to keep the squad that brought him a championship for a chance at another title and topping Shaq and Duncan in championships… however, he didn’t. What kind of players sign for less in order to help their team stay competitive? hmm… Duncan, Ginobili (okay Parker you go in there too, but only in parenthesis).

  • Honestly, i don’t think ariza is leaving LA. He just won a championship there, and they can offer him the most money of people willing to sign him. I believe he is just using this as leverage to get more than the MLE from the Lakers. But regardless, if he had to choose between the MLE at LA and the MLE at cleveland, no doubt he would go with LA. He just wants more money than what LA is offering. I would be very surprised if Ariza wore anything other than a Laker jersey next year. Which I like. I hope SA can get a hold of Odom since it looks like the Celtics are gonna get Sheed.

  • If the Spurs don’t somehow make a move for Ariza, I’m gonna cry.

  • I gotta agree with Drew on this one. It would be great news for the Spurs if either Ariza or Odom leaves the Lakers (and even better if we could land one of them), but we shouldn’t get our hopes up just yet.

My friend in LA tells me Ariza’s agent, David Lee, pulled the same sort of thing with Andrew Bynum. It could just be a ploy to squeeze the Lakers into giving Ariza an extra million. But, if a team is going to overpay Ariza (say to the tune of 8 million, or so) I’d expect him to leave. Not sure if any of the contenders have this kind of cash to spare…anyone know?
