Pregaming: Spurs vs. Grizzlies, Game 2

by

AT&T CENTER — The major news coming from pregame of Game 2 of the Spurs-Grizzlies series, is that Manu Ginobili will start for San Antonio. Apparently he will wear a brace on his right, non-shooting elbow. There should be no limitations on how much he will play, etc. If he was going to play, he was going to have to play as normal.

  • With Manu starting, George Hill goes back to his 6th man, Indiana George persona. If that results in better shooting from the field, we’re all better people for it.
  • During pregame shootaround, Spurs Assistant Coach Chip Engelland was throwing lob passes on pick-and-rolls to DeJuan Blair. I doubt the Spurs would work on any Game 2 adjustment so out in the open like that, so I expect it was just a fun way to get warmed up for the game. As always, though, keep an eye out.
  • Shane Battier spent a significant chunk of his time during pregame shootaround working on hook shots in the post. Expect Battier to try and exploit his size advantage again when Richard Jefferson is out of the game.
  • Former Oklahoma Sooners Head Coach Jeff Capel is at the AT&T Center tonight. He was sitting courtside with members of the Spurs front office during shootaround. I’m assuming Capel was invited by the Spurs to spend a few days with them, continuing the tradition of bringing recently-fired coaches to San Antonio. Don’t expect anything of it, he’s just passing through.

I just tuned in, so I missed anything earlier, but at about 2:40, Blair makes another moron move in the paint with defenders coming at him, gets a travel.

Anyone know what Tony Allen said to Manu?

  • tradeTP…after 2 more rings

can pop get his act together. Is this really happening? Bonner McDyess…… First round sweep if this ignorance continues….

  • Bruno

Wow, refs killing us in our home. Dice/Bonner/Hill are playing so bad

The Spurs looked a little rattled for the last 3 minutes. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve seen that before during this season.

they had better get their asses in gear, and I mean now, or this is the end of this series. If we lose tonight, no way Memphis relaxes on their 2-0 lead in their own building. This is classic Spurs, giving the other team too much confidence, and not playing with the intensity that’s needed to elevate their performance.

Pop continues playing Bonner/Blair together for 10+ minutes. We are not going win.

  • ny spurs fan

anyone who thinks splitter could do better than 4 fouls and 0 pts in 12 minutes is a complete fool.

  • Jacob

if only i could give Blair’s touch around the rim to Tiago… sighhhhhhh

  • Mark B

This is going to be a rough series. The Grizzlies just don’t ever quit. I salute their effort. I think the Spurs can play a lot better, but I think part of what looks like disorganization on offense is a result of Memphis’s constant harassment. I’m just glad Ginobili is back. Without him, the Spurs would have lost tonight.

  • Bruno

Manu clearly isn’t full health, but even 50% he help this team so much. 17 points/7 rebounds/4 assist/4 stls/1 blk but 5 turnovers and 7-13 from FT line

  • AS

    Manu is a beast.

The officiating was terrible. Every single call was in favor of Memphis.

    It´ll be worst in Memphis.

  • AS

What the hell was Tony doing with this 2 jump shots at the end of the game? It almost cost us the victory.

Great games from RJ and George. Keep it up guys.

  • Bruno

I can’t understand too, the last possesions Spurs need pass to Timmy/Manu or go inside!!Jump shots is a really badddddddddddddd shot

  • TD BestEVER

Spurs looked Horrible down the stretch…..and got lucky that IndyG was fouled 2 times…….If we had to actually make a basket to win, i don’t think we had one in us……..

  • Bruno

Parker is really a disappointment for me, i was expecting 25 points/game, in theory he has the easy matchup of this series

  • Dr. Who

Yeah, Dyess killed us down the stretch with his D on Randolph and boxing him out; not to mention drawing a charge in crunch time. Much rather would have had Bonner closing out the 4th like last game. What are you watching this season? Dyess sucked like all our bigs sans Duncan last game but came up big this game. Pop pulled Dyess in the last minute to go with free throw shooters and the Griz dang near tied it. We’ll need Dyess’ D against this long team and to box out ZBo. Who else do u want on Randoplh down the stretch? I guess the new crummy format is deterring the usual posters.

  • NDSpursFan

Especially with Gasol and Randolph with 5 fouls, the Spurs need to take it at them!! Either they back off on their D or foul out.

  • Dr. Who

Not to mention young Memphis forgot to foul in the last minute. Would have been interesting if they hadn’t let that time burn. Could have cost us.

  • NDSpursFan

I like the aggressiveness from RJ so far in this series. It’s something that sort of disappeared as the regular season went on but he’s finally being effective and making things happen other than his corner three pointers. The one thing he needs to work on though is his ability to pass out of the lane if he gets caught up, he’s thrown the ball away a few times with his misguided bail out passes.

  • Dr. Who

All due repect to you Bruno (I like ur posts), but look at what Conley and Allen did to Rondo, Chris Paul twice, and D Rose in the last week of the season. Rose got 24 or 26 but shot in the low 20% range. He had to take a lot of shots to get there. Comely is highly underrated and D is Allen’s calling card. They are tough on elite PG’s. Gotta give their D some credit. I wouldn’t expect Tony to average 26 against this team. Maybe he goes off one game but much respect to Conely and Allen’s help D.

  • Bruno

Man, their D isn’t the problem,
Parker is just missing layups, in game 1 he could have scored 30 points!!
Allen played against Manu, this is a tough matchup, and a 50% health Manu scored 17 points.
So i really expected more from Tony

  • Sauce

Your not giving credit to Memphis’ D. Against the Lakers, Tony can score 20 points a game because the Laker’s bigs aren’t really that physical. They are just long (Bynum is large though). But these Grizzlies, are long, with heft, and are tough/gritty. The first playoff game against them, I was going into the game thinking Tony should be able to light them on fire. By the time the first quarter ended, I realized Tony is not going to have any good statistical numbers in this series.

The Grizzlies are forreal. This looks like a 6-7 series with each game won by a margin of 3 points…

  • Dr. Who

Like I stated above look up what Conley and Allen did to 3 elite PG’s leading up to the playoffs. Conley gaurds the PG’s and Allen will help when doubling from the SG’s. They play pretty strong D. I was watching a lot of their games leading up to the playoffs.

    CP3 game 1 - 5 pts/2TO, game 2 - 0pts/2TO
    Rondo - 6pts/4TO
    D. Rose - 24pts/4TO (held to 27% shooting)

Memphis D is stout and they can clamp down on PG’s. Tony will have a game or two where he goes off and scores 20+. I just want to see his assists up and TO’s down against these guys and get everyone else to score. Then we should be in good shape.

  • Dr. Who

Yep Yep… he’s hit some 3’s from the top of the arc instead of the corner as well. I didn’t think he shot much from that spot. As long as they go in, he can shoot from anywhere… Glad to see him stepping up more than last year. Btw… GO HORNETS!!!

  • NYC

I agree. He makes some terrifically bad passes. Next item to work on come summertime, RJ.
